The Alumni Silver Jubilee Scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated excellence both in and out of the classroom. This year鈥檚 recipient, Ashlyn Nguyen (BSc 鈥25), has been recognized for her significant contributions within the healthcare industry and the considerable leadership she displayed during her time as a student in the Faculty of Science.

She also served as an ambassador for the Women Empowerment Club (WEC) and launched new projects such as the Beautiful Bosses Project which promoted local women-owned brands during the pandemic. Her dedication and unique leadership style led her to continue her work as an executive for the WEC and 91亚色鈥檚 Pre-medical Association where she continues to make an impact within the 91亚色 community.

As a Peer Health Mentor in the Health Education and Promotion (HE&P) Team, Ashlyn supported 91亚色 U students by hosting workshops related to different health topics and shared her thoughts on physical and mental health which is something she is passionate about.

Extending her leadership impact beyond 91亚色, she also serves as the Chairperson for the National World Vision Canada Youth Council where she advocates for youth participation in the decision-making processes within international development and for vulnerable children all over the world. As a proud advocate for child rights, medicine and community involvement, she continues her advocacy work as a Child Life Volunteer at SickKids hospital where she aims at making a positive difference.

When asked about the Alumni Silver Jubilee Award, she says she was super excited and honoured to receive this award. "It reflects everything that I have accomplished and is a marker that hard work and involvement in the community really pays off. It also showcases to me that I鈥檝e been able to significantly impact those who are around me and this inspires me to continue the work that I鈥檝e been doing so far.鈥

鈥91亚色 provided opportunities to allow me to get and develop a sense of community, and discover more about myself, benefiting my future decisions and aspirations," says Parmin. She was well-supported ever since her transition into university and saw it as her responsibility to foster the same experience for incoming students and future cohorts by improving 91亚色鈥檚 existing programs and training future student leaders that can drive positive change.

Parmin was honoured to be one of this year鈥檚 Alumni Golden GRADitude recipients, citing that she wishes to be a role model and encourages people to step out of their comfort zone, once you take the first step, everything else will follow. 鈥淚 want to inspire others to work hard and contribute to the community鈥 says Parmin.

91亚色 President and Vice Chancellor Rhonda Lenton (L) with Dr. Allan Carswell (R)

Dr. Allan Carswell, a renowned physicist, former 91亚色 professor and changemaking philanthropist, was recently named the Philanthropist of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

The award 鈥 presented to Dr. Carswell in November 2022, recognizes 鈥渁n individual or family that has demonstrated outstanding civic and philanthropic leadership through a proven record of exceptional generosity and financial support.鈥 Dr. Carswell鈥檚 decades-long philanthropic efforts fit these requirements to a tee.

A brilliant physicist

Well over 50 years ago, Dr. Allan Carswell joined 91亚色 as a professor of physics. He is credited as a pioneer of laser radar or LiDAR (light detection and ranging) technology, which revolutionized how we map the physical features of Earth and other planets. This development also has numerous applications in remote sensing and environmental diagnostics.

His research at 91亚色 led Dr. Carswell and his late wife, Helen Carswell, to found Optech Incorporated in 1974, which would enable more practical applications of LiDAR systems. For the first several years of business, the couple operated Optech out of their family home. Helen oversaw the company that would evolve into a 300+ employee organization that soon became the world leader in the provision of lasers for airborne surveying, 3D-imaging, atmospheric measurements, process control applications and space systems.

Giving back

After 30 years at 91亚色, numerous senior leadership and research roles, and founding his own company, Dr. Carswell retired to run the Carswell Family Foundation, which funds education and healthcare causes. Dr. Carswell and Helen have contributed to innumerable causes at 91亚色 and beyond: the Carswells have funded three Research Chair positions in the School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD), Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Health, along with the Allan I. Carswell Observatory. From his first gift in 1986 to honour the life of 91亚色 student Denise Hobbins, to supporting the , which connects students who are underrepresented in STEM 鈥 including women, Black and Indigenous high school students 鈥 with meaningful research opportunities, , and so much more in between, the Carswells鈥 legacy at 91亚色 has become synonymous with positive change.

鈥淚t was actually my wife, Helen who started it all off,鈥 said Dr. Carswell, reflecting on how the couple began their first major philanthropic efforts. 鈥淪he鈥檇 trained as a nurse at what was the [Toronto] East General Hospital. When we toured that hospital, she was so taken with it that she decided to award them with $1,000,000 to set up a special program there. [鈥 I think one of the by-products of that was that it made both Helen and myself feel so good to give away money 鈥 especially when you saw the results in terms of people.鈥

鈥淒r. Carswell鈥檚 support for student scholarships, research, community outreach and ground-breaking technology has had a lasting and transformational impact at 91亚色 and beyond. Congratulations and thank you, Allan, for your many acts of generosity,鈥 says Rhonda Lenton, President and Vice Chancellor of 91亚色.

In July of 2022, Helen tragically passed away after close to 20 years of battling Alzheimer鈥檚 Disease. In her honour, and for World Alzheimer鈥檚 Month, the Carswell Family Foundation between 91亚色 and the Alzheimer Society of 91亚色 Region to lead an evaluation research program of Alzheimer鈥檚 and dementia care programs. This program, like so many others supported by the Carswells, is creating far-reaching, truly positive change.

This year鈥檚 recipient, Zahra Mawani (BEd 鈥22), has been recognized for her significant contributions in the teaching community and the considerable leadership she displayed during her time as a student in the Faculty of Education.

In 2021, Zahra was elected as the first-year Keele Primary Junior representative of the Faculty of Education Students鈥 Association. She was responsible for facilitating operational coordination in all the events and making sure that the group鈥檚 communication platforms were utilized for maximum outreach. Seeing the immense value she added to the team, she was also elected as the association's second-year representative. She continues to make an impact using her leadership skills by helping graduating students with their overwhelming virtual job hunt during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Outside of 91亚色, Zahra has been supporting the students at Peel District School Board for more than five years. Most recently, she designed and taught two cooking and one wellness virtual camps for students with special needs. Zahra was also awarded the Robert J. Tiffin Student Leadership Award, recognizing her leadership, dedication, integrity, enthusiasm and pursuit of excellence through her endeavours.

Encouraged by her recent 91亚色 experience, Zahra has decided to return as a 91亚色 student to complete her Master of Education degree to further pursue her interest in teaching.

鈥淭he reason I want to continue my post-secondary education at 91亚色 is because of the people I have met,鈥 she says. 鈥淭he instructors were so encouraging; they gave me so much guidance despite everything being virtual. They have supported me and my career aspirations in ways I could not have imagined.鈥

Alumni Golden GRADitude Award

The Alumni Golden GRADitude Award recognizes graduating students who leave 91亚色 a better place thanks to the significant leadership they demonstrated during their time on campus. This year, there are two recipients.

Economics graduate Issa Abdi Jamaa (BA 鈥22) has been recognized for his vast contributions to the student community during his time at 91亚色. He held various senior positions within several student organizations, including his roles as president and orientation chair at Vanier College Council, student senator at the Senate, and Councillor at Faculty Council of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. He was also involved in several search committees for senior 91亚色 administrative positions such as Dean of the Faculty of LA&PS, Vice-Provost Students and the search for 91亚色鈥檚 next Chancellor. Through his many leadership endeavours, he was able to advocate the needs of the student body and facilitate efficient collaboration between students, faculty and administrators.

鈥91亚色 provided me a rich academic experience both inside and outside the classroom,鈥 he says, 鈥渁nd it not only helped me prepare for my academic journey but also the journey of an experienced leader who understands the changes that are taking place in the world and ways we can contribute to them.鈥

In addition to his involvement in student governance, Issa was also founder and president of the International Students鈥 Association at 91亚色. While in this role, he improved the visible representation of international students on campus. He worked towards an enhanced engagement of international students in the university-wide decision-making processes so that their concerns get vocalised seamlessly.

鈥淚 am truly grateful to 91亚色 for recognizing my journey as a student leader and as a changemaker,鈥 he said, regarding his Alumni Golden GRADitude Award win. 鈥淭his award motivates me to be stay involved in 91亚色鈥檚 betterment and inspires me to be the change I am hoping to see in the world.鈥

Recent graduate Tiana Putric (BDEM 鈥22) of the Disaster & Emergency Management (DEM) program has been recognized for her research involvement and contributions to the 91亚色 brand and community. While at 91亚色, Tiana maintained various positions, including her role as an Emergency Management Assistant with 91亚色鈥檚 Office of Emergency Management, where she helped modernize 91亚色鈥檚 Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA). Tiana later became lead editor of the HIRA and co-authored six papers with the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research on the ethics of digital contact tracing for COVID-19.

She said her motivation to do research was 鈥渘ot only about developing an expertise, but it鈥檚 about discovering new knowledge and becoming a thought leader.鈥

Tiana also helps 91亚色 international students navigate their experience at 91亚色 and continues to be a proud ambassador of the University. She actively promotes 91亚色 and its DEM program at various events, including Collision, one of the world鈥檚 largest tech conferences, and abroad, as the first DEM student in Canada and the United States to be awarded the Fulbright Killam Fellowship, where she completed      an exchange program at Wellesley College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and participated in the Harvard University Women in Foreign Policy Conference.

Currently, Tiana is employed at the Ontario Ministry of Health as a policy analyst, where she works on policy projects concerning Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI). She hopes that her work with the      ministry will advance the 鈥減revention, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and diseases, and ultimately improve the health and well-being of Ontarians.鈥

As one of this year鈥檚 recipients, she says, 鈥渞eceiving the Alumni Golden GRADitude award is evidence that my research and contributions as an undergraduate student were recognized. This is incredibly encouraging and for this I am very grateful.鈥
