The Order of Ontario insignia. The main badge consists of a gold medallion in the form of a stylized trillium, the official provincial flower. The obverse is white enamel with gold edging, bearing at its centre the escutcheon of the arms of Ontario, all surmounted by a St. Edward's Crown symbolizing the Canadian monarch's role as the fount of honour. The order's ribbon is patterned with vertical stripes in red, green, white, and gold, reflecting the colours within the provincial coat of arms.

A total of seven 91亚色 community members are among the 29 new appointments to the Order of Ontario announced by The Honourable 鈥疎dith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Chancellor of the Order of Ontario on Jan. 1.  

The Order of Ontario is one of the province鈥檚 highest civilian honours. It recognizes exceptional leaders from all walks of life who have demonstrated the highest level of excellence and achievement in their fields and whose impact and legacy have contributed to building a stronger province, country and world.  

Order of Ontario Appointees鈥 

The Honourable 鈥疶odd L.鈥疉rchibald (LLM 鈥86), alumnus, Osgoode Hall Law School听

Retired Justice Todd Archibald has dedicated four decades to helping parties achieve solutions to their most challenging disputes. The Honourable Archibald was a Crown Prosecutor, a litigation partner with one of Canada鈥檚 premier law firms and for over 20 years a trial judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Today, he draws on his unique perspectives and experiences as a Chartered mediator and arbitrator, helping鈥痯arties鈥痳esolve鈥痠ssues that separate them,鈥痳estore and rebuild important relationships.鈥 

Rudolph鈥 Bratty (LLB 鈥57), alumnus, Osgoode Hall Law School

Rudolph Bratty is a lawyer, real estate developer and philanthropist. He is also the founding partner of Brattys LLP and the founder of The Remington Group. He is recognized as the 鈥渕an who built Toronto鈥 for his contributions to the development of residential communities, commercial properties and retail centres in the Greater Toronto Area. One of his notable achievements is the award-winning Downtown Markham project, which revitalized the area, bringing in 10,000 residents and 16,000 employees. In 2020, 91亚色 received a transformational $10 million gift from The R.P. Bratty Family Foundation to support the development of the University鈥檚 Markham campus.  

Brian Gover, former adjunct professor

Brian Gover is one of Canada鈥檚 leading trial lawyers, skilled in criminal, civil, regulatory, and Indigenous law. He has led complex prosecutions, argued numerous appeals, and secured notable acquittals, including ORNGE. He has advised superior court judges on the Indian Residential Schools settlement and represented First Nations in significant litigation involving the Robinson-Superior Treaty. He has served as commission counsel for high-profile public inquiries, including the Walkerton inquiry and the inquiry into the bombing of Air India Flight 182. He has also served as adjunct faculty at Osgoode Hall Law School. Gover has helped shape the next generation of lawyers, and public interest organizations, enhancing access to justice and Ontario鈥檚 justice system generally.

Mina Mawani (BCom 鈥96), alumna, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies 

Mina Mawani is a distinguished leader, advocate for inclusion, equity and social justice and CEO of Dixon Hall, a multi-service non-profit agency creating lasting solutions to end poverty, social injustices and isolation in Toronto鈥檚 Downtown East. Her legacy is one of service and dedication to improving the lives of Ontario鈥檚 most marginalized and vulnerable communities. Mawani has also shared her extensive knowledge as adjunct faculty at the Schulich School of Business. Her achievements have been honoured through several awards including recognition from Bold Vision for being one of the most influential women leaders and visionaries in Canada.  

Jeanne-LucillePattison (BA 鈥75), alumna, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies 

Jeanne-Lucille Pattison is recognized for her curatorial expertise and influence across Ontario and around the world. She was also a driving force behind the prominence of various reputable Ontario painters, notably the Canadian Shield, the Group of Seven and First Nations painters like Norval Morrisseau. Through her lectures and tours, she brought Inuit and First Nations culture and artistic achievements to Ontario. Pattison also contributed to the transformation of the McMichael Gallery into a vibrant cultural hub. 

Poonam 鈥疨uri, faculty 

Poonam Puri is a nationally and internationally recognized scholar, professor and 91亚色 research chair. Puri co-founded Canada鈥檚 first investor protection clinic, a clinic that provides pro bono legal assistance to individuals who have suffered financial harm. Appointed to Osgoode Hall Law School over 25 years ago, she has served as both associate dean and associate dean, research, graduate studies and institutional relations at Osgoode.鈥疭he is also the founder and director of the Business Law program at Osgoode Professional Development. Her highly influential scholarship has guided significant policy reforms and shaped governance best practices globally.  

Walied Soliman, (LLB 鈥01), alumnus, Osgoode听Hall Law School

Walied Soliman is a prominent lawyer, philanthropist, Canadian Chair of Norton Rose Fulbright and board chair of the SickKids Hospital Foundation. Soliman advises companies on shareholder activism, corporate governance, high-stakes mergers and acquisitions and restructuring. In 2020, he was commissioned by the Ontario government to chair the Capital Markets Modernization Taskforce. In 2019, Soliman was named by the United Nations Association in Canada as its Global Citizen Laureate for his professional merit.

Order of Canada insignia laid out on list of recipients

Seven members of the 91亚色 community are among the recently-announced Order of Canada and Order of Ontario recipients. The announcements were made on Dec. 28 and Jan. 1, respectively, by the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada and the Honourable Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Chancellor of the Order of Ontario. 

The Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario recognize the exceptional achievements and contributions of individuals that have left a lasting legacy in the province and country. These individuals come from all walks of life and have played an important role in shaping our country.

Order of Canada appointees 

OFFICER

Wenona Giles, faculty/professor emerita 

Wenona Giles, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, was appointed for her significant contributions to refugee and migration studies and for her efforts to increase access to higher education among those living in refugee camps. 

MEMBERS

Patricia Sybil Pritchard Fraser, (BA 鈥75, MA 鈥12), alumna

Patricia Sybil Pritchard Fraser, a retired artistic director of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre (now the Dance Arts Institute) was appointed for her lasting contributions to Canadian contemporary dance as an artist, dancer, educator and artistic director. 

Flavio Volpe (MBA 鈥99), alumnus

Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association was appointed for advancing Canada鈥檚 automotive and technology industries on an international scale as a leading policy expert in national trade and industry competition. 

Sara Joy Angel, affiliated faculty 

Sara Joy Angel, a former journalist and now executive director and publisher at the Art Canada Institute, was appointed for her significant contributions to Canadian art history as a visual arts journalist and founder of the Art Canada Institute, which makes Canadian art history accessible online. 

Order of Ontario Appointees鈥 

The Honourable David Collenette (BA 鈥69, MA 鈥04), alumnus, faculty, donor鈥 

The Honourable David Collenette is the current Chair of the NATO Association of Canada. He has served as a Member of Parliament and cabinet minister under three prime ministers. Among his many achievements, he helped bring former Warsaw Pact nations into NATO, changed federal policy toward racial equality and diversity and led Canada鈥檚 security response to 9/11. He has also contributed countless hours to numerous not-for-profit projects, including the arts and as chair of the NATO Association of Canada. Collenette has also served on several Glendon Campus committees and has been a 91亚色 Alumni Award recipient. 

Michael Latner (BA 鈥76), alumnus鈥 

Michael Latner is the CEO of Shiplake Properties, one of the province鈥檚 most successful family-owned companies. He is recognized for his significant contributions to Ontario鈥檚 social and economic prosperity through business and philanthropy. As CEO, he has made transformational investments in local business, innovation and job creation.  

Dwayne Morgan (BA 鈥97), alumnus 

Dwayne Morgan is a poet, spoken word artist, motivational speaker and founder of production company Up From The Roots which creates opportunities for other racialized artists. He lobbied the League of Canadian Poets to include performance poets, produced North America鈥檚 two largest spoken-word events and has performed globally. 

Gervan Fearon, former faculty, donor 

Gervan Fearon is currently president of George Brown College and previously served as the president and vice-chancellor at Brock University and Brandon University. He is a veteran educator who has a vision for equity, inclusion and community empowerment.
