As part of its obligations under the , the University is required to conduct a workforce analysis to identify areas of under-representation of equity-deserving group members in its workforce. Each year, 91亚色 presents this analysis in the Annual Employment Equity Statistical Report. The report covering January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023, is now available.

The report highlights representation at 91亚色 for the four federally designated groups under the Employment Equity Act (women, Indigenous peoples, racialized persons, and persons with disabilities) and community members identified as 2SLGBTQIA+. It also highlights some of the employment equity initiatives undertaken in 2023.

This year, the data revealed some improvements, including the year-to-year increase in representation of racialized persons and persons with disabilities among total employees over the last three years (2021 to 2023).

In general, the data showed that while the overall representation rates for women continue to exceed the external availability data, numbers for Indigenous peoples, racialized persons, and persons with disabilities show a general trend of representation rates falling below the external availability data provided by Statistics Canada.

Recently, there has been a notable increase in awareness of the potential uses of employment equity data within the University community, as requests for employment equity data by units and Faculties have increased. Responding to this need, a new 91亚色 University employment equity dashboard will launch later this year. The dashboard aims to increase access to data for the entire community in order to assist in the implementation of some of the recommendations highlighted in the Decolonizing, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.

Because it is important to obtain accurate data for the dashboard to be truly useful in supporting evidence-based decision making, community members鈥 participation in the Employment Equity Survey is critical to ensure the report and the new dashboard are being truly representative of the community.

Those who have not yet completed the improved version of the employee self-identification survey yet, or would like to change their responses, can access it via within your 鈥淧ersonal Details鈥 tab. The more people who complete the survey, the more accurate the data will be for both the Annual Report and the soon to be launched dashboard.

Dear 91亚色 community,

Since its founding, Pride has been more than a celebration of sexual and gender diversity and of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. It is a call to advocacy and action to counteract interlocked forms of social injustice, the effects of stigma on physical and mental health, and the imposition of rigid norms on individuals鈥 identities and self-expression.

91亚色 answers this call by:

  • enacting equity workplace policies and practices, this year earning recognition as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers;
  • supporting the learning of 91亚色 students, faculty and staff, 700 of whom have received training regarding sex and gender discrimination by 91亚色鈥檚 Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion;
  • generating research and resources regarding the complexity of gender and sexuality, such as Professor You-Ta Chuang鈥檚 to further understand the prevalence of workplace discrimination against LGBTQ2S+ employees in Canada and how they cope, and the 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty Project led by professor Nick Mul茅;
  • encouraging our community to take action by implementing the principles of 91亚色鈥檚 Decolonizing, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (DEDI) Strategy and by accessing the DEDI Toolkit; and
  • collaborating with external community organizations on projects such as the Art Gallery of 91亚色's , a fundraiser for Maggie鈥檚 Toronto, a QT/BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+ led sex worker organization.

We invite you to visit the Pride website to learn more about how you can play a part in affirming 2SLGBTQIA+ rights at 91亚色 and beyond. There, you will find the events calendar and opportunities to join us for events throughout Pride Month, including the flag unfurling on Tuesday, June 4 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Vari Hall Rotunda.

Thank you. Merci. Miigwech.

Between June 7 and 21, more than 7,000 graduating students will put on their finest regalia and participate in the time-honoured tradition of celebrating years of academic hard work when 91亚色鈥檚 2024 Spring Convocation gets underway.

This year鈥檚 Spring Convocation will feature 13 ceremonies at both the Keele and Glendon campuses and see thousands of students take a big step forward into their futures. Once again, 91亚色 alumna Kathleen Taylor 鈥 鈥 will confer degrees on new graduands as part of her third convocation season.

An emphasis on community will remain a touchstone of the events. Each ceremony will be accompanied by student performers providing music during the academic procession, as well as before and after the events begin. Furthermore, alumni speakers will also take the stage during each ceremony to deliver a welcome message to graduands and their guests. This year鈥檚 eight honorary degree recipients will be welcomed into the 91亚色 fold, sharing their stories and advice with graduands as they embark on new journeys.

The ceremonies throughout June will embody the principles of decolonizing, equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as respect for Indigenous ways of knowing and being, and the institutional value of sustainability. These  by 91亚色 President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton to ensure convocations are welcoming to all within the University鈥檚 community.

Beyond the ceremonies, community will be fostered through celebrations () for 2SLGBTQIA+ and Black graduands 鈥 in addition to the existing Indigenous grad event organized by the Centre for Indigenous Student Services 鈥 which celebrate and recognize the achievements of the Class of 2024 and those who have supported their journey.

Graduands and their guests can expect a shorter ceremony than in past years, after feedback from the community. In addition, this year diplomas will be mailed to graduates rather than picked up on site.

All convocation ceremonies will be webcast live and a link to the feed, as well as a schedule of ceremonies, will be available on the Convocation website. That way, even those who can鈥檛 attend can feel they are a part of the occasion.
