About the book

What if what began in Gunayala in February 1925 never really ended?

A century ago, the Gunadule people rose up to defend their molas, their language, their authorities and their territory. Official history called it a “revolution” or a “rebellion.” Gunadule grandmothers and grandfathers name it bila: the duty to care for and defend Mother Earth.

Written by Gunadule and non-Gunadule scholars, the book moves from the origin stories that sustain bila to the struggles of today: the sea rising over the islands, the women who sustain autonomy from a shared placenta, and the Central American states that keep cutting back Indigenous rights. It includes a prologue by Abadio Green Stocel and seven chapters. Published in Spanish.

An outcome of the Emancipatory Horizons project and of the 2025 dialogues in Gunayala, including the Muubilli Regional Seminar. Co-published by 91ÑÇɫ and OPINUP.

Beneath the waters of Peru’s Amazon lies a world of spirits led by the Karuara, the ‘people of the river.’ A brave Indigenous woman and her family confront powerful interests to save their river and these sacred beings. This film was used in a ground-breaking lawsuit that won legal personhood for the Marañón River and its tributaries. The ruling marked the first time a Peruvian court has recognized the rights of nature.

Stephanie Boyd has been living and working in Peru as a filmmaker, journalist and educator since 1997 and has produced and co-directed four award-winning feature documentaries: "Choropampa, The Price of Gold" (2002), "Tambogrande, Mangos, Murder, Mining" (2008), "The Devil Operation" (2010) and “Karuara, People of the River” (2024).

She was born and raised in Oshawa, Ontario where she learned about labour organizing, social protest and the impacts of industrial contamination on human health and the environment.
