Named in honour of Dr. Mary McEwan, a feminist psychiatrist, this annual award of $1,000.00 will be awarded to one PhD dissertation produced in the 2024-2025 academic year at 91亚色 in the area of feminist scholarship. A committee of faculty affiliated with the Centre will choose the winners.

To be eligible:

1. Nominees must be a 91亚色 graduate student who successfully defended a dissertation during the 2024-25 academic year (September 1 2024-August 31st, 2025).
2. The nominee's dissertation must concern feminist theory and/or gender issues.
3. The examining committee for the dissertation must unanimously recommend it for an award.

The Executive Committee is responsible鈥痜or鈥痬atters of regular management of the Centre and serves in a consultative and monitoring capacity in relation to the Director (and any Associate Directors). For 2025-26, meetings will take place monthly or bimonthly online via Zoom. The term of office鈥痜or鈥痝raduate鈥痵tudent members is one academic year.听

Grad reps will represent the interests of graduate students to the CFR and have the opportunity to be involved in special projects, including events, research clusters, and the 鈥淔eminisms in Focus鈥� blog and interview series.听听

This interdisciplinary course bridges foundational concepts in artificial intelligence (AI) with feminist theories, offering a critical framework to examine how AI technologies reinforce or challenge societal power dynamics. Participants will explore key feminist principles, including intersectionality, alongside AI fundamentals such as machine learning and algorithmic design. Through lectures, case studies, and reflective activities, the course emphasizes critical theory and ethical considerations, equipping attendees with tools to interrogate and reimagine AI systems in ways that promote equity and inclusion.

A microcredit certificate will be issued to all participants from CIFAL 91亚色 and The Centre for Feminist Research.

We are looking for 91亚色 faculty with strong public writing skills or journalism experience to become the Editors of the CFR's Feminisms in Focus series. 

The series features interviews with CFR faculty, students and associates, for instance, visiting scholars. 

Besides interviews, there are also "Dispatches" which are short, lively descriptions, for general audiences, of CFR events. 

These help to introduce diverse feminist and 2SLGBTQ+ ideas to general publics and keep a public record of the important ideas shared at CFR events. 

The Editors will be responsible for:-arranging at least 4 interviews with CFR associates per academic year-arranging at least 4 CFR event organizers to write a "Dispatch" -creating a call for student writers and identifying student writers -helping student interviewers formulate questions and edit transcripts for publication-coming up with new ideas for the series, subject to the approval of the CFR Director

If you are interested, submit 200-500 words explaining your interest and writing experience, a short CV, and two short writing samples to: the cfr-coor@yorku.ca. if you are a team, submit one page total, a short CV, and one writing sample each.

This is service to the CFR and your role as Editors should be included on your CV.

The three-person adjudication committee serves a two year period and is responsible for review and selection, which includes writing a 1-3 paragraph rationale describing the qualities of the winning entry. The deadline for receiving the PhD theses for adjudication is Monday, January 15, 2024.
