From January to April 2022, the City Institute will hold virtual professional training meetings for graduate and 4000-level undergraduate students who have great interest in urban studies. Once a fortnight CITY will hold writing sessions which will be monitored by a City Institute post-doctoral fellow who will provide writing tips and feedback. Every other fortnight a faculty member will give a talk on an aspect of professional training such as: writing a CV; writing abstracts & papers for publication; writing research proposals & grant applications; knowledge dissemination & engaging with social media; developing course proposals; applying for academic jobs; work paths outside academia; and job interviews.

On February 28th, the City Institute arranged a grant writing workshop for all CITY members to discuss various grant types, as well as advice on grant writing and strategies to put together a strong grant application package. The grant session was intended to specifically assist those at the graduate level and early career stage navigate the process and develop successful grant writing strategies.

The event began with a morning session discussing the various external grants available to scholars who address the urban in research such as: foundation-based grants (Antipode Foundation, George Cedric Metcalf Foundation, McConnell Foundation, Ontario Trillium Foundation, Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, and the Urban Studies Foundation); journal-based grants (Geoforum, Antipode, Urban Studies, and the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research); government based grants (Global Challenges Research Fund Networking Grants, MITACS, Government of Canada: EcoAction Community Funding, Government of Canada: Low Carbon Economy Challenge, and SSHRC); and other bodies (Funders鈥 Network Partners for Places and the Atmospheric Fund). The following session featured an in-depth discussion about SSHRC Connections grants conducted by Professor Linda Peake (Director of the City Institute and Professor in the Department of Social Science, LA&PS). The closing session, which was chaired by Kim McIntyre (Post Doctoral Services Coordinator, Office of the Dean, FGS, 91亚色), featured a conversation about post-doctoral fellowship opportunities. Among the grants discussed were the SSHRC and Banting post-doctoral grants.
