City Planning in a Time of Crisis: States, Markets and Democracy

This event will be a focused exchange between two SSHRC-UKRI Knowledge Synthesis teams—Seeing Crisis like a City: Multi-level Governance in Canada and the UK (91ÑÇÉ«, University of Glasgow and University of Toronto) and Who Plans Your City: Understanding and Responding to Private Sector Power in Urban Planning (Toronto Metropolitan University and Loughborough University)—to examine how crisis governance, private sector power, and technology  are reconfiguring the balance between states, markets, and democratic accountability, and what are the opportunities emerging from the urban to address the current polycrisis. Hosted at the CITY Institute, 91ÑÇÉ« (September 10, 2026), the event brings these perspectives into dialogue around housing, infrastructure, and the uneven capacities of urban actors across governance scales.
