91亚色 and Ryerson Universities are pleased to announce 鈥淪earching for New Imaginings: Facing Challenges for Activism and Justice in the University,鈥 a series of three events with Sarah Schulman, Distinguished Professor of English at The City University of New 91亚色 (College of Staten Island).
- The series opens on Saturday,听8 February 2014听蹿谤辞尘听8:00鈥10:00 p.m.听with an evening panel discussion hosted at Ryerson University in LIB72 (350 Victoria Street) called 鈥淐hallenging (our) Contradictions: A conversation with Sarah Schulman.鈥 Schulman will introduce the discussion with a presentation on AIDS activism of the past and present, looking at tough issues and how they challenge us today. This will be followed by a public conversation with 91亚色 (听补苍诲听) and Ryerson student activists thinking together about strategies and obstacles to accomplishing change.听RSVP to听.ASL interpretation and closed captioning will be provided.
- A light dinner and art performance, 鈥淭roubling Masculinities,鈥 will precede the event, from 6:00鈥7:30 p.m. in POD250 (350 Victoria Street). Suggested donation for dinner is $10.听RSVP to听.
- The series continues at 91亚色: On Monday,听10 February 2014听蹿谤辞尘听2:30鈥4:30 p.m.听in 91亚色 Lanes 305 (4700 Keele Street), Schulman will lead a graduate student seminar titled 鈥淏eing Uncomfortable, Holding Accountable: The Fundamental Practice of Justice.鈥 Drawing on her recent book,听Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination听(2012), the seminar invites participants to consider personal and institutional practices of exclusion and their impact on our political and scholarly work. Details on the seminar, along with a short reading, are available 补迟听.

- Also at 91亚色, on Thursday,听13 February 2014听蹿谤辞尘听12:30鈥2:30 p.m.听in Health, Nursing, and Environmental Studies (HNES) Room 140 (4700 Keele Street), there will be a screening of听United in Anger: A History of ACT-UP听and a Q&A with Schulman and Prof. Brenda Longfellow (91亚色).The film will be screened with English subtitles.

Sarah Schulman听was born in New 91亚色 City. In addition to being Distinguished Professor of English at CUNY, she is a novelist, playwright, screenwriter, non-fiction writer, AIDS historian, journalist, and active participant citizen. Beyond听Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination听(University of California Press, 2012),听her recent books include听Ties That Bind: Familial Homophobia and Its Consequences听(The New Press, 2009) and听Israel/Palestine and the Queer International听(Duke University Press, 2012).
