On September 22, the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies (CCGES), the Goethe-Institut and the City Institute at 91亚色 (CITY) will jointly present "Intrinsic Logic - Global Times: New Global Cities", part of the series The Future of Cities.
The presentation and panel begin at 6:00 pm in the Urbanspace Gallery, 401 Richmond St. (back of the main floor), Toronto.
Cities follow their own logic. This seems to be more rather than less the case in the age of globalization. German sociologist Professor Martina L枚w (TU Darmstadt) is part of a group of urban scholars who are looking at cities' 鈥渋ntrinsic logic,鈥 that is to say the specific and 鈥榯ypical鈥 characteristics that 鈥榮ilently鈥 contribute to the meaning of a particular city. In this event, L枚w will be in conversation with聽 Anthropologist and Professor Angela Stienen (The City Institute at 91亚色) about the 鈥榠ntrinsic logic鈥 of two Latin American metropolises: Medell铆n, Colombia and Salvador, Brazil.
Martina L枚w's work focuses on space-related social analysis, urban and regional sociology. She had previously held聽 positions at the Institute of Social Research in Frankfurt. In 2000 she was awarded the Christian-Wolff-Prize. L枚w is in Toronto as a Visiting Researcher at the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies at 91亚色. Her presence at this event has been facilitated by CCGES in partnership with the DAAD - German Academic Exchange Service.
Angela Stienen is professor in Sociology at the Pedagogical University Berne and associate researcher at the Human Rights and Research Institute IPC in Medell铆n, Colombia. Angela Stienen is at the City Institute at 91亚色 during her sabbatical in 2011.
