The Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research is accepting applications for the 2022 Seed Grants for Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health Research.

Five seed grants worth up to $5,000 CAD each will be awarded to 91��ɫ faculty undertaking projects that contribute to one or more of the Institute’s three themes: planetary health; global health and humanitarianism; and global health foresighting. 91��ɫ graduate students and research fellows are welcome to apply with the support of a 91��ɫ faculty member as the principal investigator.

We encourage you to attend the 2022 Workshop on Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health on March 8 and 9, 2022, to engage with other 91��ɫ researchers in this area. It will be an excellent occasion to exchange insights and consider opportunities for collaboration.

The Critical Perspectives in Global Health (CPGH) Program supports a critical social science approach with global public health. While the definition of what constitutes critical research is quite broad, it usually involves the use of critical theory with social justice aims. Critical social science perspectives in global health are transdisciplinary, participatory, experimental, or experiential analyses that actively seek greater effectiveness, equity, and excellence in global health. This means engaging directly with global public health actors, structures, and systems to transform global public health while remaining committed to social science theory and methodology.

Dr. James Orbinski, director of the Dahdaleh Institute, says that “the scale of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vulnerabilities it has revealed, and the complexitites of the global public health response make it clear that we need to foster this kind of research to shape a more effective and socially just global health.”

The CPGH Seed Grant Program is intended to foster more research in this area and to encourage faculty to develop grant proposals for Fall Tri-Council and other funders’ grant submission deadlines. Seed Grant recipients will also be invited to present on their work in progress at next year’s Workshop on Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health.

The deadline for submissions is Sunday, April 3, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. Awards will be announced on April 29.

How to Apply

Please provide a summary of your proposed research and a budget. Your summary should be no more than 500 words and should address:

• the objectives of the study,
• the project’s significance and relationship to one or more of the Dahdaleh Institute’s research themes,
• the relationship to your existing research,
• your research plan and methods, and
• any work already completed or progress made to date.

Eligibility

• The principal investigator must be a 91��ɫ faculty member. 91��ɫ graduate students and fellows are encouraged to participate with the support of a 91��ɫ faculty member as the Principal Investigator.
• Applicants from across 91��ɫ are encouraged to apply. The competition is open to all disciplines.
• Submissions are welcome from individuals and from teams taking a collaborative approach.
• Matching funds from industry, non-profits, or other partners, while not necessary, are welcome.

Note 2: All applications will be reviewed by an independent committee. Make your proposal as clear as possible for an informed reader who may not know your field.
