Dahdaleh Institute Research Fellow Dr. S. Grace Grothaus was recently featured in CBC News' What on Earth climate newsletter in a story by journalist Anand Ram exploring how art and wearable technology can make invisible air pollution perceptible. Her work was also featured on CBC's The National and Your World Tonight radio program.

- (Oct 1)
- (Sept 24)
The coverage highlights Grothaus's wearable artwork AtmoSpheres 01, which translates particulate air-pollution measurements into illuminated lung forms and breathing animations worn on the body. It also introduces AirWear, a portable, wearable air-quality monitor being developed as part of her broader We Are Air Aware research initiative.
Working with residents of Toronto's Bathurst Quay neighbourhood, Grothaus has been conducting participatory co-design research to develop accessible technologies for understanding localized air pollution. The project is now preparing for a community deployment study next month, during which residents will carry AirWear as they go about their daily activities, collecting localized air-quality measurements and contributing feedback about their experiences.
Her interdisciplinary research brings together environmental sensing, computational art, wearable technology, and participatory design to explore how environmental information can become more perceptible, meaningful, and accessible to communities.
The CBC coverage highlights the research progress and potential - community-engaged technology development to advance public understanding of environmental health and planetary health.
