A research assistant is immediately needed for a community-engaged research project concerning the health-related resettlement needs of Afghan refugees arriving in Canada due to the recent political crisis in Afghanistan. The research assistant would be working under the direct supervision of Farah Ahmad, Professor, School of Health Policy and Management. The research team members include Michaela Hynie, Professor, Psychology and Centre for Refugee Studies, James Orbinski, Director of Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research at 91ÑÇÉ«, and Harvey Skinner, Professor, Faculty of Health. 

Duties

Under the direction of Professor Ahmad, the research assistant will be a liaison with community-based agencies receiving and supporting Afghan refugees to gather information about their health, mental health, and related social and settlement health needs. The likelihood is that this project may focus on mental health needs and knowledge translation tools, though this is not yet formally determined. The collected data will inform development of academic-community initiatives for knowledge translation and health-support. Responsibilities include: 

1. use a MS Teams-based OneDrive digital platform (URL to be supplied by Professor Ahmad, who will be the ‘owner’) to organize and store all data and background documents; 
2. correspondence with members of the research team, collaborators, and community agencies; 
3. data collection and analysis; 
4. organization, curation, and analysis of health knowledge dissemination and translation activities; 
5. and other project tasks, as directed by Professor Ahmad. 

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with an established interdisciplinary research team and gain a deeper understanding of community-engaged research and knowledge translation. 

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree or higher in health, global health, social sciences or equivalent 
• Experience in qualitative data collection/analysis and working with community-based agencies 
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills 
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Teams, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) 
• Able to work flexible hours 
• Highly organized and detail-oriented individual who is a fast learner and of high value integrity.
