As part of ongoing updates to 91亚色's official Land Acknowledgment resources, the Office of Indigenous Initiatives has updated the centralized Land Acknowledgment webpage to reflect current language and approved content.
Required action for website owners
All website owners who currently display a land acknowledgment or related contextual content on their webpages are asked to review their content and make the updates noted below.
Moving forward, webpages should link to the 91亚色 Land Acknowledgment webpage rather than reproducing the land acknowledgment text directly on individual websites. The centralized page serves as the University's authoritative source for approved land acknowledgment content and related resources.
Why this change?
Maintaining a single source of truth helps ensure:
- Accuracy of land acknowledgment language across 91亚色 websites
- Respect for the gift of the land acknowledgement from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation
- Consistency with guidance provided by the Office of Indigenous Initiatives
- Timely enterprise-wide implementation of updates (e.g. "Huron" has recently been removed from 鈥淗uron-Wendat鈥 to respect the self-determined naming of that nation)
- Reduced duplication and ongoing maintenance across web properties
The centralized webpage includes:
- Campus-specific and multi-campus land acknowledgments
- French-language versions
- Pronunciation guides
- Frequently Asked Questions
- Additional resources and guidance for the 91亚色 community
For webpages that currently contain the full text of a land acknowledgment, the text should be replaced with a brief statement and link directing visitors to the official Land Acknowledgment webpage.
Please encourage colleagues who deliver land acknowledgements in presentations, at meetings or events, to also go to the source website for their land acknowledgements, rather than copying from old copy.
Questions about land acknowledgements can be sent to indigenousinitiatives@yorku.ca.
