91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Education has created a consulting initiative called ED Global, which will work collaboratively with school boards, educational organizations, governments and diverse communities to help them maximize positive change.

ED Global began, as many ideas at 91亚色 do, with a desire to have a positive influence in the world.

Dean Robert Savage

In 2022, Faculty of Education Dean Robert Savage was thinking about how to pursue new ways to make an international impact with existing resourcesSavage found himself considering one of the Faculty鈥檚 most precious resources.

鈥淚t occurred to me that we have a great deal of expertise 鈥 both in terms of the scholarly side and experiences around running and managing complex aspects of educational systems,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 thought we could leverage that to think about the ways that we could support educational systems work around the world.鈥

The result is ED Global, a revenue-driving initiative that draws on participating community members acting as consulting specialists. These specialists will use their backgrounds in kindergarten to Grade 12 education to work collaboratively with clients from school boards, educational organizations, governments and diverse communities. They will develop and deliver custom solutions for clients鈥 respective needs in regions around the world.

鈥淥ur broad advantage lies in the ED Global mix of thought leadership with practical expertise,鈥 says Lorne Foster, who, in addition to being involved the initiative, is director of the Institute for Social Research and 91亚色 Research Chair in Black Canadian Studies and Human Rights (Tier 1). 鈥淓D Global promises to adapt and implement best-practice approaches and strategies and develop global inclusive education that will serve to advance understanding, enable smart decision making and build stronger communities on the international stage.鈥

In addition to facilitating strategies to more efficiently manage complex educational systems, collaborate with government organizations, partner with other academic institutions, develop curriculums and more, Foster has another hope for ED Global. He sees it as a means for 91亚色 to extend its pedagogical leadership and principles of decolonizing, equity, diversity and inclusion.

鈥淚 see ED Global as a special emissary of 91亚色鈥檚 long-standing traditions of social justice and its openness to a diversity of peoples,鈥 Foster says. 鈥淔or me, this means that ED Global is like an operating system with a mission to take the indelible 鈥榤ade at 91亚色鈥 social justice message out into the world.鈥

Something important to Savage, Foster and ED Global, however, is that its consulting efforts don鈥檛 impose solutions so much as guide them.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not coming in telling people what to do. We鈥檙e not saying we know it better. But we bring expertise and we鈥檙e bringing experience,鈥 says Savage. 鈥淲hat I see as our core direction is helping other systems around the world become as strong and self-sufficient as they possibly can.鈥

ED Global launched its website earlier this year and has since been building out its roster of consulting specialists, as well as generating word of mouth around its offerings through faculty members representing it at conferences, research trips and more.

鈥淲e鈥檙e looking to build connections as a very globally connected Faculty with other Faculties and other groups around the world,鈥 says Savage. The goal is for every individual partnership to lead to a network of potential new partnerships.

Even though it鈥檚 still early days for ED Global, Savage has high hopes for the road ahead. 鈥淚鈥檇 like to see that in a number of different ways, with different projects, we are meeting different needs and have been able to use a principled, evidenced, highly experienced consulting approach to add clear value both to the partner we鈥檙e working with but also their constituents.鈥

Foster has his hopes for the initiative as well. 鈥淚 am looking forward to ED Global鈥檚 leadership as a research and consulting service centre with recognized positive impact on education pedagogy, education policies and education outcomes,鈥 he says.

With three placements in the top 100 of the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject report, 91亚色 builds on ongoing momentum to right the future as it positions itself as a global leader in post-secondary education through its academic programming.

Each year, the QS Subject Report ranks a total of 55 disciplines grouped into five subject areas: arts and humanities; engineering and technology; life sciences and medicine; natural sciences; and social sciences and management.

The most recent report 鈥 which evaluated more than 15,000 programs from 1,561 institutions 鈥 placed 91亚色 among the top 100 in the world in three subject areas: education, English language and literature, and philosophy. Within Canada, the University also received top-five placement across 11 subjects.

鈥淭hese rankings reflect the high quality education and impactful research that define 91亚色,鈥 says 91亚色 President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. 鈥淲e continue to drive positive change locally and globally guided by our values as a progressive university dedicated to excellence, social justice, diversity, inclusion and sustainability. It is gratifying to be recognized for our leadership in the higher education sector. We are providing the talent needed for the 21st-century workforce and solving the complex problems facing society today and in the future.鈥

The new QS rankings add to the momentum of 91亚色鈥檚 continued impressive results over the past year in other prestigious rankings. Notably, in June 2023, the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings placed 91亚色 among the top 40 institutions advancing the United Nations鈥 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Then, in July, the QS World University Rankings saw the University strengthen its global position as a leading research-intensive university by  from the previous year.

Faculty of Education advancing its leadership

In the new QS subject rankings, released this April, the University placed particularly high in education, demonstrating its ongoing efforts in advancing the future of pedagogy.

That leadership has been shepherded by 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Education, which offers a broad range of programs, research initiatives and community partnerships, all of which embody its long-running dedication to practices of equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization.

Last year, the Faculty advanced those efforts for the occasion of its 50th anniversary and developed its new five-year strategic plan. Through the plan, the Faculty reaffirmed its commitment to providing an environment where students are encouraged to challenge the status quo to uncover new possibilities in the advancement of education and social justice.

Opportunities 鈥 like its Concurrent Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies 鈥 also have helped the Faculty stand out, as have initiatives like its Public Lecture Series,  and the W眉l茅elham offering, which engages participants in learning from Indigenous peoples.

The Faculty of Education also this year launched a new international consultancy called ED Global, offering education and professional learning consulting services to school boards, educational organizations and diverse communities.

Top five in Canada

In addition to 91亚色鈥檚 placement in the top 100 globally in three subjects, it was represented further within the top 150 in eight other subject areas: anthropology, history, accounting and finance, communication and media studies, psychology, performing arts, sociology, developmental studies and psychology (at Glendon college). The University was also represented in the top five for each of these subjects within Canada.

The rankings reflect a range of Faculties and schools at 91亚色, including the Faculty of Health, the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, and .

QS World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) that serves as an important indicator for global post-secondary education leadership and success.
