The 519 is committed to the health, happiness and full participation of the LGBTQ community. A City of Toronto agency with an innovative model of Service, Space and Leadership, we strive to make a real difference in people鈥檚 lives, while working to promote inclusion, understanding and respect.

The Faculty鈥檚 unique community practicum placement gives 91亚色 Teacher Candidates (TCs) an opportunity to study communities and their schools in order to develop a better understanding of the communities that students come from. TCs learn how to access community resources to support families, build relationships with community partners, and consider the assumptions and biases that have an impact on learning and the school experience.

91亚色 teacher candidate Victoria Ennis represented 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Education at the recent Ontario Secondary School Teachers鈥 Federation Annual Meeting of the Provincial Assembly (AMPA), which took place at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel March 10 鈥 13.

Presently a student in Faculty鈥檚 BEd in Technological Education program, Victoria was the lone teacher candidate from 91亚色 among the many other teacher candidates from universities across the province to attend the meeting.

鈥淭he experience was enriching to say the least,鈥 said Victoria. 鈥 I wasn't aware of the effort that is put into changing and altering policies to better the work environment for public educators. Noticing the commitment that was put forward from all of the members at the conference really put the need for educators to come together to fight for issues聽that matter into perspective for me. I have never experienced a democratic process of that scale before, and it was an honour to participate in the meetings.鈥

Over 500 delegates from across the province attended OSSTF/FEESO鈥檚 AMPA 2017 to pass motions, vote on policies, and adopt the OSSTF/FEESO budget.

After working with induction mentors with the New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) and partnering with Faculty of Education pre-service mentors, Dr. Lana Parker and Dr. Diane Vetter have cultivated an understanding of the value of both mentorship and the networks that foster it.

Preservice and Induction mentors conversingIn collaboration with a researcher and former NTIP Coordinator from a local school board, their study brings together small groups of pre-service mentor teachers with several highly trained mentors from the NTIP program in a full day of professional development, with a second day spent alongside teacher candidates.

Over the course of two days, the pre-service mentors will gain valuable tools and strategies for mentorship and the teacher candidates have a unique opportunity to engage in deep, purposeful, and reflective dialogues with their mentors.
