On Tuesday, March 16th, Associate Professor Aparna Mishra-Tarc was on the Mornings with Sue & Andy show to shed light on the conflict in Eastern Europe. Tarc spoke about the plight of the thousands of children fleeing Ukraine as Russian invaders continue their destructive campaign.

"One day they were going to school and everything was normal and the next day their homes were bombed and everything changed - their whole world changed overnight," explained Aparna, "These changes are dramatic in unthinkable ways. Children are experiencing war in the way that adults do and with very little way to express that."

"I think it's really important to pay attention to how children are experiencing events that are taking place in Ukraine and the ways in which they're caught up in the conflict."

All war is always war on children. As a vulnerable population, children’s lives are at the mercy of the adult community. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has threatened children’s lives and severed them from their everyday lives. Overnight, their lives have become unimaginable.

In times of social and political conflict, children are overlooked, positioned either as bystanders or victims. Despite their front-line experience of wartime events, children’s voices are barely heard. And too often, children are often the to account for what happened to their parents, communities and homelands.

"For the past 20 years, , in particular, those affected by war, forced migration and mass degradation", says Associate Professor Aparna Mishra-Tarc.

"Mostly, the narratives of children who experience war and political and social violence are undocumented . With the rise of social media, however, I detect a noticeable shift: a global forum for children’s testimony is fast emerging."

Palestinian children continue to bear the effects of the never-ending conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The New 91��ɫ Times reported that during 11 days of fighting in May between Israel and Hamas, “.” of siblings, friends and family members by weapons of mass destruction and violence. Despite this, their voices and experiences go unheard.

"My own research about transnational childhoods ," says 91��ɫ Faculty of Education Associate Professor Aparna Mishra Tarc. "But parents, teachers, helping professional adults and political leaders overlook and discount children’s immersion in armed warfare and forced displacement."

"As tiny witnesses to war, . Children capably and clearly express the unspeakable atrocities they have faced. They construct expressions, ideas and art forms from their witness. Often unknown to the adults around them, children’s embodied, playful and symbolic re-enactments send covert messages about how and what they are learning to be from violent adult conflicts."
