The Faculty of Education, Office of Student Services staff are available for walk�� inquiries and��online advising support��. We are in 128 Winters College; Office hours are Monday – Friday 9:00am to 4:00pm.

Please note: The Faculty of Education offices will be closed on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 starting at 2:00pm to end of day. We resume normal office hours on Thursday, December 19, 2024.

Holiday Closure�� 91��ɫ’s campuses will be closed from Tuesday, Dec. 24 until Wednesday, January. 1, and will  re-open on Thursday, January, 2025.�� Classes will begin on Monday, January 6, 2025.

Winter Session: Year 2 BEd P/J and JI students (ED/EDPJ/JI 3100 and 3000)
Primary/Junior and Junior/Intermediate students will see on the BEd Program Calendar /edu/students/undergraduate-programs/bed-program-calendars/ ED/EDPJ 3000/ 3100 for Primary/Junior and ED/EDJI 3000 /3100 for Junior/Intermediate students. These courses are six weeks and posted as WA = starts January first six weeks in winter and WB = starts mid-February last six weeks These courses won’t plot to the Undergraduate Students Timetable schedule Monday to Friday because the session codes are not familiar to YU system. But you can see the time, day and session code WA and WB in writing under Important Notes in Search Course Timetables

Black History Education: Transformative Pedagogies and Contemporary Educational Encounters

Ineffective Black history education is a global phenomenon. Reasons for this include anti-Black philosophies where forms of miseducation and Black dehumanization have guided history education policy. Additionally, many Black history proponents lack general Black history definition and knowledge. This presentation seeks to inform audiences of effective and humanistic ways to approach Black history through a Black historical consciousness framework as put forth by LaGarrett King.

In conversation, Funké Aladejebi will respond and draw on feminist pedagogies to further explore how legacies of race, gender, and migration influence the contemporary educational encounters of Black Canadian communities.

Dr. LaGarrett J. King is Professor and Director of the Centre for K-12 Black History and Racial Literacy Education in the Graduate School of Education, University at Buffalo (SUNY). A former teacher in Texas and Georgia, his research broadly examines how Black history and race is taught and learned in schools and society. He also researches critical theories of race, teacher education and curriculum history. An internationally recognized award-winning scholar of Black history education, Dr. King received two early career scholar awards for the Critical Issues in Curriculum and Cultural studies special interest group of the American Educational Research Association and the College and University Faculty Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies. He was also awarded one of the prestigious Emerging Scholar of the African Diaspora Award the Comparative and International Education Society Special interest group. He has over 60 scholarly articles and book chapters published in scholarly journals such as Theory and Research in Social Education, Race, Ethnicity, and Education, Journal of Negro Education, Teaching Education, and The International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education. Dr. King earned his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Funké Aladejebi is Associate Professor in the Department of History, University of Toronto. She is scholar of the twentieth century with a specialization in Black Canadian history. Her research and teaching interests focus on oral history, the history of education in Canada, Black Canadian women’s history, and transnationalism. Her recently published book, Schooling the System: A History of Black Women Teachers (MQUP, 2021), explores the importance of Black Canadian women in sustaining their communities and preserving a distinct Black identity within restrictive gender and racial barriers. Her writing frequently explores how legacies of race, gender, and migration influence the contemporary educational encounters of Black Canadian communities. Her articles on Black Canadian history and feminist pedagogies have appeared in Education Matters, Ontario History, and the Southern Journal of Canadian Studies. She is also currently co-editing with Dr. Michele Johnson, a collection of essays titled, Unsettling the Great White North: African Canadian History (UTP, 2022), which explores the histories of African Canadian, Canadian, and African Diasporic communities across chronological, regional and thematic subjects. Dr. Aladejebi earned her PhD from 91��ɫ.

Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) Starting fall 2024 the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) has been reinstated as a certification requirement for teachers who will be certified in Ontario as of February 1, 2025.

Religious Education: Teaching in Catholic Schools – Who Should Attend
Any undergrad BEd student in the final year (yr 2) of BEd and interested in preparing to teach in Catholic schools. NOTE: This course is open only to 91��ɫ Faculty of Education undergraduate students. This course is not equivalent to the Religious Education, Part 1 additional qualification. Students who are in the CEC BEd (Catholic Education Centre) cohort will have completed EDUC 3000 “Teaching in the Catholic Schools” in their first of the BEd. Therefore, do not need to register.

91��ɫ U. Study Abroad - Costa Rica in July 2025

A summer abroad opportunity for BA Educational Studies students and Year 1 Bachelor of Education students to Costa Rica in July. Professor Steve Alsop will be teaching Education for a Sustainable Future - ED/EDUC 3700 3.00 (an education elective for BEd students) and ED/EDST 3700 (course that meets BA degree course requirements). BA Educational Studies and Bachelor of Education (BEd) Concurrent students ~ Apply to graduate (degree audit review): BA students need to apply to graduate online using the convocation Website at Deadline to apply is March 1, 2025.

Please note for Concurrent BEd students you may only see the Bachelor of Education record when requesting to graduate. These students will also need to submit a request for a degree audit of their undergraduate program. The form to submit the request is . Students in the Consecutive BEd model will be automatically reviewed for degree completion.

Thinking ahead for June 2025 graduation - BEd students

BEd students graduating in June 2025 will be applying to the Ontario College of Teachers to become a certified member. There are several steps students will need to take to ensure there are no delays nominating BEd graduates. Full nomination to the Ontario College of Teachers by the Faculty of Education will not be submitted until late May 2025 when final grades and practicum days are completed successfully.

Review the OCT application information at
Apply for OCT membership/registration: Visit: select Members and then Create an Account. In order for the BEd Student Services Office to send your recommendation, we require the six-digit OCT registration number for each graduating teacher candidate.
Submit the six-digit Ontario College Teachers (OCT) registration number by June 1, 2025, to the Faculty of Education. The online form is available on the Faculty of Education website.

Apply to graduate (degree audit review): Only Concurrent BEd students need to apply to graduate online using the convocation website at Deadline to apply is March 1, 2025. Please note, Concurrent BEd students may only see their Bachelor of Education record when requesting to graduate. These students will also need to submit a request for a degree audit of their undergraduate program. The form to submit the request is . Students in the Consecutive BEd model will be automatically reviewed for degree completion.

Send Transcripts to OCT ~ Graduating BEd teacher candidates will need to order all post-secondary transcripts and be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers. The Faculty of Education cannot order students transcripts, it’s the responsibility of students. When ordering transcripts, please indicate that you wish for your 91��ɫ transcript to be sent after degree completion. Please order your transcript while completing your OCT application, using the OUAC Transcript Request available at

Recommendation to OCT - The Faculty of Education will only send your recommendation to OCT following degree(s) completion. Transcripts ordered by the student and the recommendation sent by the Faculty of Education are required for certification.

Those students who have submitted their request for Transitional Certificate and will be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers, the Faculty of Education, Office of Student Services will use this information (OCT Registry number) for final OCT recommendation/ submission. Students will need to re-order their 91��ɫ U. transcript to show OCT the degree(s) conferred.

This will also include the Toronto Metropolitan University ECS BA/PJ BEd students completing the teaching program requirements end of July and wishing to request the Transitional Certificate. Information on the Transitional Certificate will be shared with the TMU BA/BEd students in April 2025.

Their office provides academic accommodation and support to students with disabilities in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s and 91��ɫ Senate Policy on .

As well, students needing non Academic Counselling can contact This unit helps 91��ɫ students to realize, develop and fulfill their personal potential in order to maximally benefit from their university experience and manage the challenges of university life. Students come to SCD because of a wide range of concerns including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, abuse, stress, self-esteem, relationship issues, eating and body image as well as issues related to sexuality, short-term individual, couple, and group counselling, crisis intervention and consultations regarding students in distress/crisis and issues related to overall mental health.
