The Language Requirement is specific to your situation.

Glendon is a Bilingual institution that encourages language learning in both English and French. Everyone has some level of Language requirement to complete within their degree.  All students are designated as having either French or English as their dominant language. Your language requirement includes earning credits in both your dominant and non-dominant language and must be completed using Glendon courses only.

There are 3 different levels of language requirement depending on your degree type:

  • The Bilingual Degree
  • The Flexible Language Degree (non-bilingual)
  • The International Degree (bilingual or trilingual)

All students are admitted to the Bilingual Degree by default.

Applies to students in the following bilingual degree programs:

  • Bilingual BA
  • Bilingual Honours BA
  • Bilingual BSc
  • Bilingual Honours BSc

Requirement:

Complete 6 credits in French from the following options:

  • French second language courses (GL/FSL) at the 2000-level. Only open to students whose dominant language is not French.
    And/or
  • Discipline courses (i.e., non language courses) that are taught in French.
Note: A Bilingual Requirement Form must be submitted for discipline courses taken in a student鈥檚 non dominant language. See below for details.
  • Excludes:
    • FSL courses at the 1000-level
    • FRAN courses at 1000-level
    • SP courses
    • Courses taught in two languages

Complete 6 credits in English from the following options:

Courses taught in two languages

English second language courses (GL/ENSL) at the 2000-level or higher. Only open to students whose dominant language is not English.
And/or

Discipline courses (i.e., non language courses) that are taught in English. A Bilingual Requirement Form must be submitted for discipline courses taken in a student鈥檚 non dominant language. See below for details.

Excludes:

ENSL courses at 1000-level

SP courses

Courses taught in two languages

While officially the language requirement for a Bilingual Degree is only 6 credits, you will likely take more credits in order to fulfill the requirement.

Every student will have completed a language assessment before beginning their degree. Based on the results, you will enrol in one of the following FSL courses offered at Glendon:

  • GL/FSL 1001 3.00
  • GL/FSL 1110 3.00
  • GL/FSL 1120 3.00
  • GL/FSL 1210 3.00
  • GL/FSL 1220 3.00
  • GL/FSL 2000 3.00

The FSL courses build on each other. So, starting at your placement level, you will need to take each course, in order, with a minimum grade of C, until you have reached and completed the 6 credits at the 2000 level.

For example, if you were placed in GL/FSL 1110 3.00, you would take the courses in this order:

  • Semester 1: GL/FSL 1110 3.00
  • Semester 2: GL/FSL 1120 3.00
  • Semester 3: GL/FSL 1210 3.00
  • Semester 4: GL/FSL 1220 3.00
  • Semester 5: GL/FSL 2000 3.00
  • Semester 6: GL/FSL 2100 3.00 or GL/FSL 2200 3.0

This is the lightest of the 3 language requirements and is only available to students whose non-dominant language is French; that is, who are completing the Language Requirement with FSL courses.

Applies to students pursuing the Glendon BA with flexible language option.

Requirement: Complete 6 credits in your second official language (French or English) at the level of placement at Glendon.

  • Sexuality Studies
  • Sociology

Eligible programs with  French as the dominant language:
Political Science

With the Flexible Language Requirement, you are only required to complete 6 credits of GL/FSL courses at your placement level.

For example, if you are placed in GL/FSL 1110 3.00, you would take the following two courses:

  • GL/FSL 1110 3.00
  • GL/FSL 1120 3.00

Self-identified First Nations, Metis and Inuit students have the option to complete six credits in an Indigenous language in place of the French/English as a second language requirement described above.

Requirement for the Bilingual International degrees:

Complete 18 credits in French from the following options:

  • French second language courses (GL/FSL) at the 2000-level. Only open to students whose dominant language is not French.
    And/or
  • Discipline courses (i.e., non language courses) that are taught in French.
Note: A Bilingual Requirement Form must be submitted for discipline courses taken in a student鈥檚 non dominant language. See below for details.
  • Excludes:
    • FSL courses at the 1000-level
    • FRAN courses at 1000-level
    • SP courses
    • Courses taught in two languages

Complete 18 credits in English from the following options:

  • English second language courses (GL/ENSL) at the 2000-level or higher. Only open to students whose dominant language is not English.
    And/or
  • Discipline courses (i.e., non language courses) that are taught in English. A Bilingual Requirement Form must be submitted for discipline courses taken in a student鈥檚 non dominant language. See below for details.
  • Excludes:
    • ENSL courses at 1000-level
    • SP courses
    • Courses taught in two languages

At least 6 credits in each language must be completed at Glendon.

Requirement for the Trilingual International degrees:

To be completed in addition to the above requirement.

  • 18 credits in a modern language offered at 91亚色, including at least one advanced level course.

At least 6 credits in each language must be completed at 91亚色.

If you have only one major field of study, this requirement applies to you.

However, if you are enrolled in a combined program (double major or a minor), you are exempt from this requirement.

You must complete 18 credits in subjects outside of your major.

These credits can be at any level.

Courses whose main subject is outside of your major, but that are cross listed to your major, cannot count towards this requirement. You can see all the subjects a course is cross listed to by looking up the course on the 91亚色 Courses Website and reading the course description.

Ex. An International Studies major could take GL/PSYC 2510 6.00 towards this requirement, but not GL/HUMA 2644 6.00 since this is cross-listed to GL/ILST 2644 6.00

satisfied by your Glendon Core Curriculum and General Education requirements.

Therefore, you need to complete 9 additional credits in science disciplines outside your major:

  • 6 credits at any level
  • 3 credits at the 2000 level or higher

Please see the list of applicable subjects below:

  • Biology (BIOL)
  • Psychology (PSYC)
  • Mathematics and Statistics (MATH)
  • Computer Science (EECS)
  • Physics and Astronomy (PHYS)
  • Biophysics (BPHS)
  • Biochemistry (BCHM)
  • Chemistry (CHEM)
  • Geography (GEOG)
  • Kinesiology and Health Science (KINE)
  • Science and Technology Studies (STS)

Please note that remedial courses will not count towards this requirement.

The upper-level requirement ensures that you are taking a minimum number of credits at a higher level of study.

Generally, courses at the 1000 and 2000 level are designed to give you a base of knowledge to help you succeed in more challenging courses at the 3000 and 4000 level. Upper-level courses will often have 1000 and 2000 level courses listed as prerequisites for this reason.

Upper-level courses at the 3000 and 4000 level require you to engage more in independent thought and to utilise your critical thinking skills within the classroom.

Officially, you must complete 18 credits at the 3000 or 4000 level for this requirement. However, the credits at the 3000 or 4000 level within your major will also count towards this requirement.

Most majors in the 90-credit degree type will have 12 upper-level credits in the major.

As a result, most students will have to complete 6 further credits in any subject at the 3000 or 4000 level to complete this requirement.

This is not necessarily true across all majors - you need to look at your major requirements to see how many credits you will already be taking at the 3000 and 4000 level.

Officially, you must complete 18 credits at the 4000 level and 18 credits at the 3000 or 4000 level for this requirement, for a total of 36 credits. However, the credits at the 3000 or 4000 level within your major will count towards this requirement.

For example, majors in the 120-credit BA degree type might have 24 upper-level credits in the major. 12 credits at the 3000 level and 12 credits at the 4000 level. In this case, you must complete 6 further credits at the 4000 level and 6 further credits at the 3000 or 4000 level.

This is not necessarily true across all majors - you need to look at your major requirements to see how many credits you will already be taking at the 3000 and 4000 level.

Officially, you must complete 42 credits at the 3000 or 4000 level for this requirement. However, the credits at the 3000 or 4000 level within your major will count towards this requirement.

If you are a Biology major, you have 9 credits at the 3000 level and 12 credits at the 4000 level in your major. Therefore, you must complete 21 further credits at the 3000 or 4000 level.

If you are a Psychology major, you have 12 credits at the 3000 level and 12 credits at the 4000 level in your major. Therefore, you must complete 18 further credits at the 3000 or 4000 level.

When you have taken into account all of the specific degree requirements that apply to your degree, they will usually not add up to the total 90 or 120 credits that you need to complete your degree. Whatever credits are left to reach that total are your electives.

Follow this simple equation:

90 or 120 credits

(minus) Major requirement

(minus) Glendon core curriculum

(minus) General education requirement (BSc)

(minus) Language requirement

(minus) Credits outside the major requirement

(minus) Upper-level credits requirement

= Elective credits required

Remember that this is where overlapping requirements may change the number of elective credits you have. The more your requirements overlap with one another, the more electives you will need to take.

To complete your electives, you can take any courses you like at the undergraduate level at 91亚色. There are no restrictions on the subjects or year levels for elective courses, so you can have fun and explore!

Degree Structure

The  is the official record of the university鈥檚 requirements and regulations. A new calendar is published each year.

This is where you will find the requirements for your degree, as well as the rules the university has laid out to regulate its degrees. Each faculty has its own rules and regulations, and the university has policies that apply to all faculties.

For your overall faculty rules and regulations, you can consult the calendar from the year that you started at 91亚色.

For your major and minor, you can consult the calendar from the year that you switched into that program.

Below, please see a series of videos guiding you through how to navigate the academic calendar.

There are two different degree types offered at Glendon:

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Science

Within those types you can pursue a:

  • 90-credit bachelor鈥檚 degree
    • Generally known as a 鈥3-year degree"
  • 120-credit Honours bachelor鈥檚 degree
    • Generally known as a 鈥4-year degree鈥

Whichever degree you are pursuing will be comprised of several different Requirement Types. Each of those in turn have their own credit requirements that count towards the total number for your degree (90 or 120).

All of your requirements together will not necessarily add up to 90 or 120- the leftover or 鈥渕issing鈥 credits are your electives.

Your degree will further be distinguished by the level of language you decide to pursue:

  • Bachelor鈥檚 degree with Flexible Language option
  • Bilingual Bachelor's degree
  • Bilingual or Trilingual International Bachelor's degree

Please refer to the Language Requirement section for more information.

Requirements can overlap with each other. One course can sometimes count towards two or three, different requirements.

For example, you can take a major course taught in your non-dominant language (English or French), and this course would count towards both your Major requirements and your Language requirement.

Despite requirements overlapping, it will not reduce or increase the overall number of courses that you need to complete to graduate. The more you overlap requirements, the more elective space you will have in your degree. You can use this elective room to take any courses you are interested in or to add additional qualifications (certificate, minor, etc.) to your degree.

Degree requirements that cannot be overlapped:

  • Major requirements with second major or minor requirements
  • Major or minor requirements with the General Education or Glendon Core Curriculum requirements
  • Major requirements with the Credits Outside the Major or Science Credits Outside the Major requirements
  • General Education or Glendon Core Curriculum requirements with the Credits Outside the Major requirement (Bachelor of Arts degrees)

Degree Requirements that can be overlapped:

  • Language requirement with any other requirements
  • Upper Level requirement with any other requirements
  • General Education and Glendon Core Curriculum requirements with Science Credits outside the Major requirement (Bachelor of Science degrees)

Once you have planned where you plan to overlap credits, you should double-check with an academic advisor to ensure accuracy.

Your major is the largest component of your degree, taking up about a third of your credits. This is your main subject of study.

You may choose to pursue more than one main subject of study.

  • You can add a second major subject.
  • You can add a minor subject, which is similar to a major in that it focuses on a specific area of study, but minors require fewer credits to achieve.

You can only choose to combine two areas of study; therefore, you cannot have two majors and a minor, or a major and two minors.

These options are only available for students in the 120-credit honours degree program.

See your options for adding a second major or a minor here.

Supplementary Degree Options

There are three additional requirements that you need to ensure you complete when pursuing an iBA or an iBSc.

Make sure to consider requirement overlap, there may be ways to double or even triple up on some of your requirements! If you aren鈥檛 sure how to do this, send us an email at acadservices@glendon.yorku.ca

You are required to complete 12 credits (2 to 4 classes) from the list of approved Internationally Oriented courses. You can find the list on our website here:

/glendon/academic-services/internationally-oriented-courses

You are required to go on exchange to a university outside of Canada. Both the Glendon exchange office and the 91亚色 International office have formal agreements with various universities across the globe, allowing 91亚色 students to attend their institutions on exchange.

You can choose to go on exchange for either a period of one or two semesters.

If you are going on exchange for one semester (only the Fall, only the Winter, or only the Summer), you must pass an equivalent of at least 9 credits at your exchange university.

If you are going on exchange for two semesters (the Fall and Winter), you must pass an equivalent of at least 18 credits at your exchange university.

Courses you complete on your exchange can count towards many different degree requirements. Make sure to plan ahead to know which requirements you want to complete while on exchange.

Whether you are pursuing a Bilingual or Trilingual International degree, you have a more demanding language requirement than most of Glendon鈥檚 degrees. Please refer to the section above outlining the different levels of language requirement.

Are you pursuing a certificate program?

See the list of available Glendon Certificates, and their requirements, online: Apply to a Certificate Program - Academic Services

You can also pursue a certificate program offered by another faculty at 91亚色.

The addition of a Certificate to your degree will take up some, if not all, of your elective room in your degree. Most certificates require between 18 and 30 credits.

Some certificate requirements might overlap with your major or other requirements, which could help you fit it into your degree, within the 90 or 120 credit total.

Glendon offers several work placement and internship courses that can enrich your studies and provide you with practical experience.

Permission is required for experiential education courses and a placement needs to be approved. For more information contact the Experiential Education team at ee@glendon.yorku.ca and consult their website.
