91��ɫ celebrates 2026 Mitacs Research Internees

Every year, 91��ɫ welcomes talented undergraduate students from around the world to work alongside our faculty researchers on innovative projects across a wide range of disciplines through the .

The program offers the opportunity for top quality undergraduate researchers in partner countries to come to Canada for 12-week internships that allow them to learn from Canada's top scholars and expand their global professional ties in preparation for future careers.

This past year in 2026, 91��ɫ was proud to host a record of 61 GRI students ranging from Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Jordan, Mexico, Pakistan, Taiwan, Tunisia, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. To celebrate their accomplishments, 91��ɫ International hosted the annual Mitacs GRI Research Fair, where interns showcase their research, connect with peers, faculty members, and the 91��ɫ community.

This year, dozen of GRI researchers showcased their projects spanning methods to combat climate change and solve systemic health inequities. Congratulations to the 91��ɫ GRI Class of 2026!

Humboldt fellow joins 91��ɫ U for research collaboration on AI navigation systems

91��ɫ will advance its global research profile with the arrival of Germany’s Max Mehltretter, a computer scientist and recipient of a Humboldt Research Fellowship who will undertake a six-month visit under the supervision of Professor Jinjun Shan.

The Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship, awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, is a competitive international research program. It connects promising German scholars with established researchers abroad to pursue independent inquiries and build global profile and networks.

Mehltretter is based at Leibniz University Hannover, where he leads the Photogrammetric Computer Vision Group. focuses on AI-driven 3D reconstruction and interpreting visual data – teaching computers how to see, understand and measure the 3D physical world using cameras and intelligent sensors.

Mehltretter will join 91��ɫ on Oct. 1 to collaborate with Shan, a former Humboldt fellow and an expert in dynamics, control and navigation of autonomous systems. The research will focus on projects that combine advanced computer vision with smart sensing systems – an area of growing importance as industries adopt automation and AI tools.

“Dr. Mehltretter’s work explores areas that align closely with 91��ɫ’s strengths in space engineering and autonomous systems,” says Shan, a professor at 91��ɫ’s .

Shan’s research centres on improving how satellites and autonomous systems move, operate and make decisions in challenging environments. He leads work that combines control theory with applications in space missions, robotics and intelligent systems, including contributions to missions such as .

Mehltretter also brings experience in international scientific leadership, including roles with the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and the German Society for Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geoinformation. His fellowship at 91��ɫ will contribute to academic exchange, mentorship and the development of graduate students and research teams.

The visiting fellowship also reflects the University’s commitment to support international collaborations and attract globally mobile talent, with 91��ɫ’s Offices of the Associate Vice-President Global and Vice-President Research & Innovation providing matching funds from the Global Research Excellence Seed Fund program.

“Programs like Humboldt show how 91��ɫ continues to attract top international scholars,” says Shan. “By strategically investing in global collaboration, the University is strengthening its ability to address complex challenges through innovative, interdisciplinary research.”

91��ɫ joins Canada Learning Initiative in China (CLIC)

91��ɫ is thrilled to have joined the Canada Learning Initiative in China (CLIC)!

A national consortium of a dozen leading Canadian universities, CLIC will further advance 91��ɫ's academic connection with China by providing funding opportunities and programs for our students to study abroad at Chinese higher education institutions. 91��ɫ currently has over 50 active partnerships with China, and by joining CLIC, 91��ɫ students have greater opportunity to travel and collaboration.

91��ɫ hopes to send its first student to China through participation with CLIC in Fall 2026 - to our valued partner Fudan University.

91��ɫ explore collaborations with Piedmonte, Italy

We were pleased to welcome a delegation from Piemonte, Italy, to 91��ɫ this week for an introductory discussion on potential collaboration opportunities, particularly in the areas of AI and innovation.

The visit offered a valuable opportunity to introduce the delegation to 91��ɫ’s broad ecosystem and to highlight the university’s strengths in research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry connections. We were glad to have contributions from Amir Asif and Pina D'Agostino from 91��ɫ - Research & Innovation, Nafis Ahmed from YSpace, 91��ɫ, Joseph Turcotte, PhD from the IP Innovation Clinic, Caitlin Mullin from Connected Minds CFREF, and Professor Jinjun Shan, who welcomed the delegation to the Autonomous Systems Lab for a closer look at 91��ɫ’s work in this space. We also appreciated the role of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in helping facilitate this exchange.

It was a useful first exchange to explore shared interests and potential avenues for future collaboration.

91��ɫ welcomes Swedish education leaders

On 27 and 28 March, 91��ɫ and Toronto Metropolitan University were pleased to co-host a delegation of Swedish university leaders for two days of thoughtful discussion on international research collaboration, science diplomacy and strategic partnerships. At TMU, 91��ɫ’s Pina D'Agostino and Ravi de Costa were excellent panelists, helping to frame how universities can act as strategic actors in a changing geopolitical environment and how institutional priorities can be scaled internationally.

91��ɫ was proud to welcome the Swedish delegation to Keele Campus for a program that included opening remarks from Interim President Lisa Philipps and Vice-President Research and Innovation Amir Asif, a rich discussion on research security in a dynamic global risk environment, and a forward-looking session on strategic research partnerships between Canada and Sweden towards Horizon 2027 and beyond.

The breadth of Canadian research excellence was exemplified by colleagues including 91��ɫ researchers Satinder Kaur Brar, Michaela Hynie, Ali Asgary, Eric Kennedy and Tara Haas, alongside TMU researchers Rania Hamza, Elsayed Elbeshbishy, Abbas Ghasemi. The day closed with a strong panel on strategic international partnership development featuring Anders Hagfeldt, Vice Chancellor at Uppsala University, President and CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities Steve Orsini and Douglas Proctor, PhD

We were delighted to be part of these conversations and look forward to building on the connections and opportunities that emerged from the visit from our valued Swedish colleagues.

Last week, the Glendon Campus of 91��ɫ | Campus Glendon de l’Université 91��ɫ hosted an engaging day exploring the deep research, collaboration, and mobility ties between French and Canadian higher education. 91��ɫ has longstanding partnerships with French research institutions and is passionate towards advancing transatlantic collaboration.

91��ɫ was honored to welcome President Dr. Hoang Cong Gia Khanh and Dr. Le Van Hinh, Head of the Department of Cooperation and Development from the University of Economics and Law, VNUHCM (UEL).

Hosted by 91��ɫ International, the meeting brought together UEL leadership with 91��ɫ’s senior administration, academicians, researchers, and representatives from 91��ɫ – Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies and Osgoode Professional Development.

The visit underscores 91��ɫ’s ongoing commitment to expanding academic and research ties with Vietnam. As part of this growing partnership, 91��ɫ and UEL will explore joint academic programming, collaborative research initiatives, faculty exchange, summer and short-term programs, and pathways that deepen people-to-people, experiential, and student learning opportunities.
