Awards and Other Support Funds

Many graduate students at 91亚色 are successful in winning prestigious external or internal scholarships and you are encouraged to seek eligible opportunities. The university also offers bursaries and other support funds to assist with your scholarly and research activities. Common types of funds include the following: 

External awards such as SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR doctoral and CGS-Masters programs, as well as the Ontario Graduate Scholarship;

Bursaries that are allocated based on demonstrated financial need;

Research support funds to cover expenses related to scholarly and research activities;

Graduate Program or Faculty Specific Awards

MA and PhD students in the Joint Graduate Program in Communication & Culture at 91亚色 are invited to apply for the Ioan Davies Award. This award recognizes excellence in student scholarly and/or creative research. It is given annually to an outstanding student registered in the Graduate Program in Communication & Culture at 91亚色, who demonstrates financial need and a research interest in the topics reflected in the work of Ioan Davies:

  • aesthetics;
  • critical cultural theory;
  • culture in the global arena;
  • culture in everyday life;
  • technology and identity;
  • the culture of cities.

Professor Davies taught at 91亚色 from 1972 until his death in 2000, helped establish the African Studies Program, the Graduate Program in Social & Political Thought and the Joint Graduate Program in Communication & Culture, and was a founder of the journal border/lines.

Students may be nominated by faculty or may apply independently. The nomination or application must include the completed application form and the submission of a scholarly paper, thesis or dissertation chapter, or research-creation project. Applicants' year of study and degree requirements will be taken into consideration in the adjudication of this award.

Amount: $500 min. to $1000 max.

Eligibility: MA and PhD students registered full-time at 91亚色 in the . Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents, and Ontario residents.

Submission deadline: February 21. 5 p.m. (now closed)

This scholarship is given annually to a graduate student in the Graduate Program in Communication & Culture, with preference given to students specializing in Politics and Policy. The recipient will have demonstrated academic excellence (minimum A average), financial need, and needs to be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident/protected person and an Ontario resident. The Graduate Program Director or associate director and/or admission committee will make the selection. The award is valued up to $2,000.

Scholarships of up to $10,000 may be awarded to graduate students in the Joint Graduate Program in Communication and Culture who have a stated interest in leading edge media research with a Canadian focus. Normally, students entering their second year of MA studies in the Joint GraduateProgram in Communication and Culture will be considered for this award.
