Overview
Lord Dufferin, Canada鈥檚 third Governor General after Confederation, created the Academic Medals in 1873 to encourage academic excellence across the nation. Over the years, they have become the most prestigious award that students in Canadian schools can receive. Medals are presented on behalf of the Governor General by participating educational institutions, along with personalized certificates signed by the Governor General.
Value and Duration
- There is no monetary award associated with the Medal
- There are three awards available per year, for Master鈥檚 and PhD students
Eligibility
- GPA of A or higher;
- Demonstrated superior academic accomplishments.
- Will be receiving their degree at the Spring Convocation in June 2026, or who received their degree in Fall 2025.
Deadlines
- Program nominations are due to FGS no later than May 02.
How to Apply
Students must be nominated by their graduate program. Graduate programs compile the documents below and nominate eligible candidates.
- Letter of Nomination from the Graduate Program which indicates how the nominee has demonstrated 鈥渄istinction in scholarship at 91亚色鈥;
- CV;
- Copies of transcripts;
- Letter of support from Supervisor that is directly pertinent to, and highlights the nominee鈥檚 鈥渄istinction in scholarship鈥, detailing the elements of the student's work which make it exceptional.
