91��ɫ U visual arts PhD student named Glenfiddich Artist in Residence

A 91��ɫ visual arts doctoral student will head to the Scottish Highlands this summer after being named the 2026 Glenfiddich Artist in Residence, one of Canada's most prestigious honours for contemporary artists. Jenine Marsh, a first-year practice-based PhD student in visual arts at 91��ɫ’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) was selected from more than 200 applicants across Canada. A national jury of artists and curators chose Marsh, with the final selection made by Glenfiddich Artists in Residence program curator Andy Fairgrieve.

AMPD Music alumnus wins Grammy Award

91��ɫ alumnus Justin Gray (MA ’14) of School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design,has won the 2026 Grammy Award for Best Immersive Audio Album for his project IMMERSED. The album was recognized for its innovative use of immersive sound and its collaborative scope, bringing together 38 artists from around the world, including several 91��ɫ faculty and alumni. Professor Noam Lemish, a Juno-nominated musician, composer, and faculty member in AMPD’s Department of Music, was among the collaborators on the project.

When 91��ɫ Associate Professor Doug Van Nort steps onto a stage, he isn’t just surrounded by musicians – he’s surrounded by collaborators, both human and non-human. For more than a decade, Van Nort has been developing AI-driven machine partners, or machine agents, that improvise alongside performers. Much of that work has been done through the DisPerSion Lab, which he founded in 2015, to explore new modes of creative expression through technology. There, rather than imagining a future where AI replaces human creativity, Van Nort says he is intent on challenging artists to think, feel and listen differently.

Each year, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) selects Canada’s Top Ten, a list celebrating the best in recent Canadian cinema, from feature-length films to shorts. Members of 91��ɫ’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design frequently appear on the annual list, reflecting the creative impact of 91��ɫ graduates and their status among Canada’s top filmmaking talent. This year, four former and current AMPD students were recognized for their feature-length or short films.

91��ɫ researchers share immersive storytelling practices

91��ɫ is earning recognition in the world of emergent media and extended reality (XR) through a project that draws inspiration from the micro-economy of sari-sari stores in the Philippines. These community-operated convenience shops, often managed by women and deeply embedded in local culture, are the focus of the Sari-Sari Xchange (SSX) initiative, a partnership with McMaster University, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Mitacs Accelerate research internship program. The SSX team, including 91��ɫ PhD candidates Sana Akram and Haoran Chang, will bring its research and creative practice to the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival on Nov. 13 and 14 as part of the festival’s RA:X programming, dedicated to innovative screen-based projects.

91��ɫ research highlights Canadian roots, global impact of IMAX theatre

A new research project led by Janine Marchessault, professor in 91��ɫ’s , is uncovering the little-known early history of IMAX – from its invention at Expo 67 to its transformation into a global cinematic phenomenon. Marchessault’s inspiration for the project began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she was reflecting on the state of cinema. “There was a sense a few years ago that the collective experience was over, that going to the cinema was over,” she says. But as theatres reopened, she noticed audiences returning in search of something bigger – both literally and figuratively. “You could see the shape that IMAX was going to have post-pandemic. It’s an immersive experience you cannot get in your living room.”

Filmmaker alumni from 91��ɫ’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) were recognized with awards and honourable mentions at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This year’s TIFF featured a strong presence from AMPD with nine alumni selected to showcase their creative works to audiences from the global film community. Several of those alumni went on to receive awards or honourable mentions from TIFF’s prestigious festival-end prizes, which are decided either by audience vote or by a jury of film industry professionals.

Alumni from 91��ɫ’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD), Osgoode Hall Law School, Schulich School of Business, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Graduate Studies have made a significant mark on the Canadian entertainment industry this year, taking home top honours at the Canadian Screen Awards. From reality television and animated series, to award-winning documentaries, 91��ɫ alumni accepted a total of 19 awards, demonstrating their influential roles in the Canadian entertainment scene. The Canadian Screen Awards are known for honouring contributions to Canadian media across film, television and digital media.

Three 91��ɫ scholars received this year’s Governor General's Gold Medals, which recognize the outstanding scholastic achievements of graduate students in Canada. The 2025 recipients are Bianca Bondi, Laurence Butet-Roch and Vladimir Kanic. The Governor General's Academic Medals are considered the highest honour earned by exemplary Canadian scholars throughout every level of academia. This year’s awardees offered words of gratitude to their peers and mentors, and expressed what the medals mean to them, ahead of their Spring Convocation ceremonies.

Professor blends art, activism and academia in mentorship approach

Laura Levin sets the table with rich feasts for her graduate students on so many levels. Sometimes it’s an actual dinner, a salon-style dinner, to bring grad students together and help them relax into their roles. Sometimes it’s a cross-cultural dinner that brings together researchers, activists and artists from across the Americas to dine and discuss – and likely laugh and play – and gain understanding.
