From plant defence in soybeans to epidemic modelling, 91亚色 graduate researchers are tackling urgent scientific and social questions. The Faculty of Graduate Studies recognizes outstanding research annually through its thesis and dissertation prizes. The annual prizes 鈥� valued at $2,000 for doctoral dissertations and $1,000 for master鈥檚 theses 鈥� honour work defended in the previous calendar year that demonstrates originality, excellence and impact. This year鈥檚 awards highlight six projects that explored pressing questions with implications for food security, AI, public health, aging, air quality and workplace accessibility. Together, the projects show how graduate research at 91亚色 connects scientific inquiry with real-world challenges.

A 91亚色 doctoral researcher will help inform international policy on equitable access to water and sanitation as part of an international advisory group. Michael Davies鈥慥enn, a Faculty of Graduate Studies student in the Global Health graduate program, joins the Expert Group on Equitable Access to Water and Sanitation led by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The three鈥憏ear appointment highlights the impact of 91亚色 researchers in addressing complex global health and environmental challenges. The group brings together researchers, policymakers and practitioners and began its work earlier this year to guide the implementation of the World Health Organization鈥檚 Protocol on Water and Health.

For some PhD students, the prospect of a career outside academia can come with feelings of failure or uncertainty. A new program at 91亚色 is trying to change that. Beyond the Academy is a six-week initiative developed by Zachary Spicer, associate professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) and head of New College, in partnership with 91亚色鈥檚 Co-op & Career Centre. Designed specifically for LA&PS doctoral students, the program guides a cohort of 25 PhD students through career exploration, translating academic skills for non-academic settings, networking, job search strategy and concrete next steps with emotional support built in from the start.

91亚色 graduate students Martin Barakov, Massimiliano Muci and Sepideh HajiHosseinKhani may have different focus points for their studies, but they will all pursue research in Germany this year as recipients of an academic exchange grant. DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service, is the world's largest funding organization for international academic exchange. Through its Research Grants program, it provides funding to support doctoral students and post-doctoral research at a German university. For Barakov, a political science PhD candidate with a master鈥檚 degree from 91亚色, the funding will help enhance his dissertation via archival research and interviews with local residents.聽

As communities around the world face increasingly complex emergencies, the demand for disaster and emergency management expertise continues to grow. Addressing population displacement, public safety risks and long鈥憈erm recovery requires approaches grounded in research, policy and community engagement.

At 91亚色, the Master of Disaster & Emergency Management (MDEM) program supports graduate鈥憀evel study focused on preparedness, response and recovery across diverse contexts. This September, the program welcomes Tommy Taylor, recipient of the $20,000 Chancellor Bennett Master鈥檚 Scholarship for Liberal Arts.

Administered through the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS), the scholarship recognizes incoming graduate students with strong academic achievement and research potential. For Taylor, entering the MDEM program reflects a long鈥憇tanding commitment shaped by lived experience and community鈥慴ased emergency response work.

鈥淭he honest answer is that I didn鈥檛 find this field 鈥� it found me, twice,鈥� Taylor says.

His first encounter came in 2010 during the G20 Summit in Toronto, where he was a part of the largest mass arrest in Canadian history. The experience, which later informed his solo documentary performance You Should Have Stayed Home, shaped his understanding of disasters as events influenced by policy and power. 鈥淭hey are shaped by decisions about whose safety counts and whose doesn鈥檛,鈥� he says.

Taylor鈥檚 second formative experience emerged during the COVID鈥�19 pandemic, when he spent several years working on the frontlines of crisis response for unhoused community members, including in shelter and harm鈥憆eduction settings. Witnessing systemic gaps in emergency response prompted him to pursue graduate study. 鈥淚 needed to understand these systems from the inside,鈥� he says, 鈥渟o I could help rebuild them.鈥�

Through its interdisciplinary approach, the MDEM program enables students to examine emergencies through social, economic and policy lenses. Under the guidance of 91亚色 faculty members, Taylor will focus his research on how emergency management systems can better account for social vulnerability and lived experience.

Receiving the Chancellor Bennett Scholarship provides Taylor with the stability to fully engage in his studies. He says the recognition affirms the value of professional and community鈥慴ased experience in shaping effective research and policy.

鈥淢y goal is to help build emergency management frameworks that take social vulnerability seriously, not as an afterthought, but as the organizing principle,鈥� Taylor says.

As he begins his studies, Taylor joins a community of graduate students and researchers working to strengthen preparedness and inform policy that supports communities when they need it most.

As cities around the world grapple with mounting waste crises, researchers at the 91亚色 Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) are exploring a critical but often overlooked question: who does the work of managing waste and under what conditions? At 91亚色, this question is shaping an emerging area of interdisciplinary research that connects environmental change with labour, inequality and shared global priorities. Research efforts led by聽Shubhra Gururani, a political ecologist, associate professor of anthropology and director of YCAR, examine how waste is a technical or environmental problem, but also a deeply political one, structured by histories of colonialism, race, caste and gender.
