Specifically, Bhatia鈥檚 research focuses on how universities in Canada enact their policies and plans related to SDGs.

鈥淚t is believed that Higher Education Institute, especially universities, have a bigger role to contribute to the SDGs,鈥 notes Bhatia. 鈥淚 think my research can provide an understanding of that role and how universities are contributing to the SDGs through their specific initiatives or actions through global and national and local impacts.鈥

Terry Jones MFA, Film

Jones is a Seneca filmmaker who grew up on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation. His thesis film, Osn枚', is a story of the twelve-year-old Young Speaker, whose preoccupation with WWII conflicts with his grandfather鈥檚 attempts to teach the boy the customs and traditions of Seneca/Haudenosaunee culture. The film raises important and critical themes including the loss of ancestral knowledge, the endangerment of Indigenous languages, war, colonialism and intergenerational historical trauma.

鈥淚ndigenous culture and history to a lot of the general public is a mystery. I feel that there isn't a lot of knowledge in terms of who we were, who we are now, and where we're going to in the future,鈥 shares Jones. 鈥淚 want to be able to inform, entertain and have my audience reflect on this sometimes serious subject matter.鈥

CeAnn Marks MA, Psychology

Marks鈥 research highlights that men and women often recuperate from certain conditions like concussions differently. In her MA study, she notes the differences in how males and females recover in visuomotor and emotionality domains after suffering trauma.

鈥淐oncussion research has mainly looked at males or a combination of males and females but hasn't really looked at distinct differences between males and females,鈥 reveals Marks, 鈥渟o the goal, hopefully, is that this research directly or indirectly will help create specific treatments and approaches to concussion management.鈥

The individualized treatments that Marks discusses in her research can improve post-concussion outcomes or the symptoms that people experience post-concussion.

Rupsha Mutsuddi MDes, Design

Mutsuddi鈥檚 MA study uses a human-centered approach to understand daily rituals in everyday activities for persons living with dementia and their care partners. Daily rituals are the customized and nuanced ways we go about everyday activities, for instance making a morning cup of tea or coffee.

鈥淲e're trying to understand those experiences first before going into technology design,鈥 explains Mutsuddi. 鈥淲e hope the way that we are incorporating daily rituals sort of paves the way for others to do so as well to create inclusive structures that take into account people's social and cultural and individualized habits as well.鈥

Her cutting-edge research can have a positive impact on society and make the lives of the aging population more comfortable by keeping people in their homes longer with their families.

Biftu Yousuf PhD, Geography

Yousuf鈥檚 dissertation examines Canada鈥檚 refugee protection and resettlement project, which offers a pathway to safety and protection to those who are abroad but are in need of resettlement. Her particular focus is on the invisible sponsorship role of racialized diasporas who have become sponsors, particularly groups of people or communities of people who are made up of formerly resettled refugees or even asylum seekers.

鈥淚 have found that the knowledge mobilization has been the most thrilling aspect of the research,鈥 shares Yousuf. 鈥淪o far, I've had ample opportunities to collaborate with civil society, exchange knowledge ideas and information and even co-develop some solutions to some pressing issues in this private refugee sponsorship program.鈥

Her important research can influence and inform policymaking decisions in the future and provide solutions to social and economic inequalities.

Alexandro Di Nunzio has been awarded a five-month scholarship /gradstudies/2023/11/22/di-nunzio-awards-scholarship/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 21:05:05 +0000 /gradstudies/?p=54230

Alexandro Di Nunzio, a Digital Media master鈥檚 student, is currently on exchange at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany, after being awarded a five-month scholarship as part of the Erasmus+ KA171 DAAD programme. His primary research focus while abroad is in the development of multiplayer virtual reality applications in the Unity Game Engine, utilizing the 鈥榲rEDUsys鈥 multi-user framework being developed and shared by researchers at Bauhaus University.

When researchers working for the Virtual Reality and Visualization Research Group at Bauhaus were invited to 91亚色, Alexandro was able to work closely with them to prototype the implementation of their multi-user framework with one of the projects the GeoVA Lab had been working on. This successful collaboration inspired Alexandro to shift his research goals towards virtual reality development, and he applied for this exchange opportunity so that he could enjoy the advanced virtual reality course offered at Bauhaus. As a result of these studies, Alexandro is now tasked with adapting the educational applications he has been working on so that they may also be experienced in virtual reality.

Alexandro is also busy implementing the 鈥榲rEDUsys鈥 framework into his own Major Research Project on real-time audio analysis and visual music, with the intent of developing an application for representing remote musicians as individual music visualizations in a shared virtual reality setting. Designed to accompany live performances, this application is also intended to be used for remote educational purposes and should effectively demonstrate the capabilities of the underlying multipurpose audio analysis toolset Alexandro has been developing over the past year.

An image of the Virtual Sandbox Project, one of the projects Alexandro has been developing. This image visualizes the three-point plane problem, a fundamental concept in civil engineering and surveying that involves determining the orientation and position of a plane in three-dimensional space based on the coordinates of three non-collinear points located on that plane. This problem is crucial in various civil engineering applications, including land surveying, construction, and geodetic measurements.

MPPAL Students Succeed Through Co-op Experiences! /gradstudies/2022/12/13/mppal-co-op-experiences/ Tue, 13 Dec 2022 14:31:00 +0000 /gradstudies/?p=49978

Luke Jan

I started the MPPAL program in the fall of 2022 while still working in the private sector. My goal was always to pivot my experience in Risk Management to the OPS utilizing the education gained from the MPPAL Program. As of December 2022, I have been fortunate enough to have been offered a position in the Office of the Chief Risk Officer of the Treasury Board Secretariat as a Risk Analyst. In this role, I will support policy and program development in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) across the OPS along with overseeing its implementation. It is thanks to the MPPAL program that I was prepared to transition to an advisory role that required a level of empathy that aligns with the office's goal of advising on Justice & Social Risk.

Luke Jan

Maggie de Barra

I started the MPPAL program in the fall of 2021 while I was still working full time in the private sector. I knew that I wanted to pivot to the public sector eventually, but I was planning to wait until after graduation to start applying for jobs in the OPS. I noticed a job posting that Dr. Couto sent to our class that sounded like a perfect fit for my interests and skills and took a huge leap and applied right before the holidays. I started my co-op position with the Ministry of Education in early January! During my eight months as a Co-op Student, I attended several formal and informal networking sessions and workshops. Towards the end of my second term, I learned of an upcoming vacancy in another Branch through a fellow Co-op Student. In September, I started my new role as the Executive Assistant to the Director of the Skills Development and Apprenticeship Branch. The Co-op program was a great way to get experience working in the OPS, learn new skills, and grow my professional network.

Mitchell Contant

As a co-op student for the Business Supports Unit (BSU), part of the Ministry of Infrastructure (MOI), I worked on program and policy-related projects. Throughout my co-op experience, I learned many data synthesizing and analysis skills, and in 3 short months, this experience led to a full-time offer. Currently, as a program analyst, I evaluate metrics and key performance indicators for Ministry projects, which help optimize and improve MOI鈥檚 program trackers. With my willingness to learn and support the BSU team, I have had the opportunity to work on many amazing projects, including ones that have been published on the Ontario Builds website.
