Just ahead of the holidays, we want to send a shout-out to all graduate educators, supervisors, committee members and students from your colleagues at the Faculty of Graduate Studies! We see you and want to let you know that we are planning something with you in mind that we hope will be both materially valuable and meaningful. Something grounded in dignity, mutuality and capacity-building.

Graduate education stands as a cornerstone in the academic landscape and the quality of the graduate supervisory experience plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic and professional trajectories of students. The dynamics of this relationship profoundly impact the quality of research, the development of professional skills, and the overall academic experience. Inside of these relationships where student development is central are valuable faculty colleagues who matter to us. With that in mind, we wanted to find a way to wrap around graduate supervisors, committee members and graduate students and begin to vision. We quickly recognized that to plan and enact something like this we needed to secure funding. Thankfully, 91亚色鈥檚 Academic Innovation Fund (AIF) granted Faculty of Graduate Studies Associate Dean, Academic Dr. Cheryl van Daalen-Smith with a three-year grant for the establishment of a Graduate Supervision Support Hub (GSSHub). Recognizing the multifaceted challenges and opportunities inherent in the supervision process, we are taking a transformative step by introducing the Graduate Supervision Support Hub and rooting it in principles of dignity, mutuality and effective supervisory practices. With this pan-university initiative, we intend to cultivate and support an ethos of dignity around mutually beneficial supervisory relationships drawing on graduate supervisory pedagogy and capacity-building principles that recognize the pivotal role of effective supervision in graduate education.

Photo of students working collaboratively

At the core of the envisioned GSSHub is the promotion of supervisory relationships enveloped in mutuality. Acknowledging the diverse needs and expectations of supervisors and students, we want to keep relationships at the center with an ethos of dignity folded into every aspect and explicit regard for the inherent value of both the supervisor and the student. By fostering a culture of trust and collaboration, the GSSHub aims to enhance the overall graduate supervisory experience for everyone involved.

This approach acknowledges that good supervision is not innate, nor solely about overseeing research projects but is a relationship that requires mentorship, guidance, ethics, mutual respect, collaborative goal setting and skill development. In graduate education, students and supervisors encounter various challenges such as communication gaps, differing expectations and navigating interpersonal relationships and academia, so the aim is to address challenges with effective practices, capacity building, a centralized platform for support and guidance, and a toolkit of resources fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement in supervision methods.

To ensure the pan-university GSSHub aligns with the diverse needs of our academic community, we extend a call to all partners 鈥 颅颅graduate students and faculty members颅 鈥 to actively engage with us as we seek input and guidance. By participating in consultations and sharing invaluable experiences and insights, you can help shape the development, initiatives and effectiveness of the proposed GSSHub which will empower supervisors and students to thrive in their academic pursuits making it a true reflection of the collective vision for effective supervision support.

Stay tuned for a brief survey for graduate supervisors in winter 2024 where we will seek to gather your input as to what supports and services the GSSHub might provide. For now, we are gathering names of folks who want to be heard and planning a listening tour including more consultations. We hope you will write to us and indicate your willingness to contribute. To do so, you are invited to contact the Graduate Supervision Support Hub Program Manager, Tracy Bhoola at tbhoola@yorku.ca.

We look forward to co-creating this with you,

Cheryl van Daalen-Smith, Wesley Moir & Tracy Bhoola

Become Career Ready with FGS鈥 Individualized Development Plan /gradstudies/2021/10/27/career-ready-with-fgs-idp/ Wed, 27 Oct 2021 13:39:00 +0000 /gradstudies/?p=44828

Graduate school is often overwhelming, and all the skills acquired in the process can be difficult to track. The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) is here to help. 91亚色 community members now have access to the Individualized Development Plan (IDP), which lets students take the necessary time to recognize their achievements, organize them in neat categories and identify areas that still need to be developed. Given the competition for jobs, it鈥檚 important for future graduates to be proactive, and with the help of the IDP, students can create a customized plan to build on their professional skills that will help them succeed in the future.

The IDP is part of a cyclical process that asks students to assess their current level of expertise, identify areas that they would like to improve on and map out a plan for achieving these goals. What makes this tool convenient, is that it clearly outlines six major areas that students will have the ability to focus on: Career Exploration and Planning, Communication, Health and Wellness, Managing Time and Resources, Research Dissemination and Teaching. Each category is important for a well-balanced graduate experience.

This handy tool acts as a support structure that helps students decide what they want to get out their degree, and what they want to achieve after graduation. The IDP provides students with the possibility to create their own individualized path that they will follow during their graduate studies. The whole process is guided by questions that help students evaluate how much they undertook in each of the six areas and identify specific goals for the future, making it easier to concentrate on individual tasks. Since the IDP is a living document, students have a chance to work on this from year to year as they develop new skills. Graduate students can start developing these professional skills by viewing opportunities and resources offered at 91亚色 by visiting the Graduate and Postdoctoral Professional Skills (GPPS) webpage.

This tool can also be a great way to start and develop conversations with supervisors, graduate program directors and career advisors who would be able to address specific areas of concern that students might have. Course directors can also use the IDP as a tool in workshops that are focused on professional development or to get conversations started around post-graduate plans in seminars. Additionally, the IDP can be shared not only with faculty but with peers. It can be a starting place to form bonds with other graduate students and find similar interests within the community.

Graduate students who elect to complete the Faculty of Graduate Studies鈥 IDP this academic year will be issued a Certification of Completion at the conclusion of the winter term that they may highlight on their resume/CV. For more information visit the Individualized Development Plan (IDP) website.

Background

91亚色 is pleased to announce the fifth cycle of the Provost鈥檚 Postdoctoral Fellowships for Black and Indigenous scholars. This program was created to address under-representation of Black and Indigenous scholars in many disciplines and fields of research and associated careers. While gaining a foothold to begin a career can be difficult in itself, too often Black and Indigenous scholars face the additional challenges of racism and systems structured implicitly or explicitly to protect others鈥 privilege. Supportive mentorship and network-building can be lacking or actively denied. The Provost鈥檚 Postdoctoral Fellowships for Black and Indigenous Scholars begin to address this problem by providing collegial resources, supervision, mentorship, and funded time to successful applicants to seek their chosen careers.

91亚色 is committed to promoting justice in all of its forms through our research, teaching, decision-making, community involvement, and advocacy. Every Faculty at the university seeks to build collegial networks of support to tackle all forms of bias and challenge racism in every form. 91亚色鈥檚 Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion assists actively in this work, by providing a suite of services to the 91亚色 community writ large. We have a responsibility as a public institution to provide equitable access to opportunities for emerging scholars to acquire the knowledge and skills that will help them to create successful futures. A fundament of equitable access is the inclusion, integration, and promotion of diverse of backgrounds, knowledges and ways of researching, thinking, knowing, communicating and relating. The Provost鈥檚 Postdoctoral Fellowships for Black and Indigenous Scholars at 91亚色 provide one such opportunity.

Information Session: Of interest to potential applicants and supervisors, this online session will include an overview of the application process, a discussion of the evaluation criteria, and a Q&A portion.
