Grad school is a place where passion can turn into ground-breaking discoveries and creative solutions to global issues. The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) is proud to support this cutting-edge research performed by our diverse body of students. From environmental sustainability to innovative solutions to societal change, these 91ɫ scholars and researchers are undertaking projects that can lead to real-world impacts and public good.

, a master’s student in Public Policy, Administration and Law, explores the experiences of autistic adults and caregivers in the Autism Mental Health Literacy Project (AM-HeLP). The guides created by AM-HeLP emphasise that societal acceptance and appreciation of autism is critical for better support and well-being of Autistic adults. Her visionary research can lead to societal changes in improving mental health care services in Canada.

“I hope that my research really can aid in the planning or the development of future mental health services and programs and also to build policies that build capacity and promote effective collaborations with stakeholders to better address unmet needs in society,” says Tablon Modica of the project. Her research highlights how vital it is to be an ally to marginalized groups and advocate for their voices to be heard.

is a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry, who is exploring the use of non-metal catalysts as more sustainable alternatives of the future. His project creates a positive impact on a global scale by advocating for a greener chemical industry. Jordan is thinking outside the box with his research by opposing traditions in the field. Previously, scientists used metal catalysts to form unique bond activations and lower the energetic barriers that enabled these transformations, but Bentley is proposing that some organic materials can also do this.

The research that Bentley is undertaking has prepared him for a meaningful career in research. Whether it is going to be inside or outside of academia, his enthusiasm for the field will aid him in generating a more sustainable future for generations to come. “My passion has always been in energy research especially on the chemical end,” says Bentley. “I’ve always loved to get my hands dirty and really understand how things work even from a young age.”

Jordan Bentley

is a third year PhD student at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. She is conducting multi-disciplinary research combining psychology, vision science and computer vision in order to understand drivers’ driving patterns. This cutting-edge work aims to build better driving assistance systems that can warn drivers and direct them to the things that they should be paying attention to on the road. By building these healthy driving patterns, this visionary research can ultimately save lives.

Kotseruba’s program provided the necessary interdisciplinary opportunities to make this research possible, “I felt very fortunate to be exposed to many many works that give me a lot of ideas that I couldn't think of just staying within computer vision,” says Kotseruba. Through venturing outside of her direct field, Kotseruba has the potential to create global impacts.

The virtual classroom has become a real-life research project for , a master's student in Education. His research is very timely as it deals with technology in education and its pedagogical, ethical and political consequences. His innovative project questions how specific identities engage differently with the multitudes of functions of Zoom and other platforms that are being used for virtual classrooms.

“I think that the resulting pedagogies coming from my project will seek to inform curriculum design and teaching design and how we go about engaging in teaching in the virtual classroom,” says Khan of the potential contributions that his project can have on the future of education.

Meta has endowed 91ɫ with a fellowship of $250,000 USD. This new endowment establishes the first-ever corporate-sponsored graduate fund for sustaining vision research at 91ɫ.

The University has chosen to dedicate the fund to its Centre for Vision Research (CVR).

91ɫ’s Vice-President of Advancement Susana Gajic-Bruyea remarks, “we are delighted to welcome Meta’s gift in support of graduate students in the field of vision research. Meta’s gift amplifies the ground-breaking work being done here at 91ɫ while signalling the importance of support for the ever-growing field of vision sciences. Meta’s gift follows on the heels of their announcement of their investment to the expanding VR and tech sectors here in the GTA. This gift is the University’s first endowed graduate fellowship in vision sciences funded by a corporation, and we look forward to welcoming more leaders to partner and grow with us.”

The CVR continues to play a leading role in vision research for decades by undertaking ground-breaking studies in a variety of fields from 3D displays to computer vision to cognitive neuroscience to multisensory integration. The CVR training programs offer unique, hands-on opportunities and a collaborative environment that facilitates students' research efforts by providing access to a variety of neuroimaging tools (structural and functional MRI, EEG, TMS). Fundamental research that merges techniques in human psychophysics, visual neuroscience, computer vision and computational theory is supported by innovative facilities from a 3T fMRI scanner to a wide array of visuo-robotic platforms.

With the support of family and his colleagues, the CVR has named the fund in honour of Kevin MacKenzie, a 91ɫ alumnus and Meta employee who passed away August 25, 2021. The fellowship is a way to acknowledge the innovative work in vision research at 91ɫ undertaken by the CVR and remember MacKenzie.

The 91ɫ alumnus received his PhD in psychology from CVR. His graduate research focussed on depth perception, specifically how the human visual system integrates information from stereopsis and motion to define surfaces in depth.

“Kevin enjoyed the challenges of scientific enquiry and did not back down from difficult problems. He also loved the comradery of working with a team and was an enthusiastic participant in outings, and events – he was the life of the party and a solid friend to those who knew him,” recalls Department of Psychology Professor Laurie Wilcox, who was MacKenzie’s MA and PhD supervisor.

MacKenzie went on to several careers, most recently with Meta Reality Labs where he was working as the Lead Research Scientist of the Applied Perception Sciences team, focusing on vision research involving Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. Throughout his time working in the industry, MacKenzie was a great supporter of individual research labs and the vision science community through the Vision Sciences Society.

Robert Allison, a professor at 91ɫ's Department of Computer Science and Engineering as well as director of the CVR, worked in the same area and was MacKenzie’s close colleague during his time at the CVR. Allison says, “This generous fellowship will allow students to work at the forefront of vision research and its applications under the guidance of the world-class researchers at 91ɫ’s Centre for Vision Research.”

The fund will also contribute to the broader intellectual community at the University and provide leadership in the VISTA program, the interdisciplinary (CFREF) funded Vision: Science to Applications program. ձմ’s work is dedicated to advancing vision science through computational and biological research perspectives that result in real-world applications. Scholars who participate in the program are involved in the production of patents, inventions, licences and companies that positively impact industry, healthcare and society.

In collaboration with more than 50 academic, public and for-profit partners from around the world, VISTA aims to integrate visual neuroscience with computer vision to drive innovation and propel Canada forward as a global leader in the vision sciences. This donation provides additional opportunities for future researchers who will contribute to progressive discoveries. Now more graduate students interested in vision science and its applications can benefit from getting involved in the space where cutting-edge research is created.

“Vision Science is moving increasingly towards an era of integration and real-world application,” stated Wilcox and Allison. “In addition to supporting individual talented junior scientists this fund will help advance the quality and scope of their research endeavours.”
