Depth and breadth of knowledgeA thorough understanding of a substantial body of knowledge that is at the forefront of their academic discipline or area of professional practice including, where appropriate, relevant knowledge outside the field and/or discipline.Identify, critique, and apply knowledge of the key histories, theories, cinematic texts, methodologies, debates and critical assumptions central to the field of CMS. Demonstrate specialized knowledge of at least three sub-fields within CMS Demonstrate a keen awareness of and engagement in debates and/or new problems in CMS Offer an original contribution to CMS through the dissertation. Develop courses, write proposals/abstracts/papers for conferences and publication. Completion of the PhD within 6 to 18 terms via: 18 credits of course work Attendance in Film 5400 Graduate Seminar Comprehensive Field Exam Dissertation There are two required courses: Film 7000 3.0: Key Concepts in Cinema and Media Studies; Film 6230 Contemporary Cinema and Media Theory Film 7020 3.0 Advanced Methods and Research in Cinema & Media Studies Assignments in these and elective courses include critical responses, in-class presentations, historical and critical research projects, workshop assignments, and individual research projects. There are three open courses that invite students to work individually, collaboratively, and/or with an institution to develop their own research and professional competencies: Film 5600 Internship Field Placement allows students to develop professional transferrable skills and extends their specialized and/or practical knowledge base with the cinema and media arts and industry sectors Film 5700 Student Initiated Collaborative Research Project permits students to undertake collaborative research under the supervision of a faculty member. Film 5800 Directed Reading permits students to undertake individual research under the supervision of a faculty member. The Comprehensive Field Exam is intended to test students depth of knowledge in three fields of their choosing. The 200-300 page written or hybrid Dissertation is an original intervention into the discipline or disciplines engaged in the project. 2. Research and scholarshipa) The ability to conceptualize, design, and implement research for the generation of new knowledge, applications, or understanding at the forefront of the discipline, and to adjust the research design or methodology in the light of unforeseen problems; b) The ability to make informed judgments on complex issues in specialist fields, sometimes requiring new methods; and c) The ability to produce original research, or other advanced scholarship, of a quality to satisfy peer review, and to merit publication.Demonstrate advanced understanding of key theoretical constructs by exploring/proposing new connections in course assignments; identify gaps in the literature; and pursue original research in the dissertation, including possible archival research. Translate assignments into conference proposals, publication abstracts, and/or research/creation or other forms of non-textual scholarship for peer review.Students demonstrate comprehension and originality in the application of knowledge through in-class presentations, class discussions, and other course assignments in required and elective courses. Film 7000 introduces students to a range of central theoretical paradigms for researching cinema and media. The focus of the course varies from year to year. It also assists students in the preliminary articulation of their research projects through a grant-writing assignment, while synthesis papers lay groundwork for comprehensive field exam essays. Film 6230 is an in depth study of major theoretical schools and debates within contemporary cinema and media theory. Film 7020 3.0 Advanced Methods and Research in Cinema & Media Studies surveys and critically examines advanced research methods and methodologies in Cinema & Media Studies and cognate disciplines to support doctoral students in their preparation for dissertation proposals and dissertation research. All PhD students are actively encouraged to submit proposals to conferences and are expected to be members of academic associations relevant to their research interests. Conference-going and publishing are two important topics discussed at the required Film 5400 Graduate Seminar Film 7000, which doctoral students are required to attend in first year. When students have completed dissertation proposals,. prepare work-in-progress presentations at Graduate Symposium. In addition to these formal requirements, students may also show competence in research and scholarship through Developing, supporting, and presenting a sustained argument in a research essay Developing a clearly articulated dissertation proposal for their primary 2-5 year research project3. Level of application of knowledgeThe capacity to : a) Undertake pure and/or applied research at an advanced level; and b) Contribute to the development of academic or professional skills, techniques, tools, practices, ideas, theories, approaches, and/or materials.Locate and evaluate primary and secondary source materials related to historical, critical, and/or theoretical research. Identify gaps within existing literature Assess and critique various theoretical concepts developed and/or applied by others and identify areas where further scholarly inquiry is needed. Synthesize core theoretical concepts and ideas from multiple authors and put these ideas into conversation with one another in a clear, organized manner in written assignments (e.g. papers) and in the comprehensive exam field essays. Conduct research and write a dissertation employing a range of skills and methodologies, sometimes including knowledge of other languages, knowledge of other cultures, quantitative and qualitative analysis, etc.In-class presentations in all courses provide students with the opportunity to develop their analytical skills as well as their ability to synthesize and communicate key ideas in a set period of time. In-class presentations also give students an opportunity to critique their peers in a collegial, professional manner. Competence in the application of knowledge can also be demonstrated in a variety of ways including: researching and writing 15-30 page essays or hybrid forms of scholarship for required and elective courses comprehensive exams, in the form of field essays and annotated syllabi, equip students with the specialized knowledge they need to undertake research for their doctoral dissertation and to prepare and qualify students to teach undergraduate courses in cinema and media studies writing a dissertation with the support of a supervisor and doctoral committee4. Professional capacity/ autonomya) The qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and largely autonomous initiative in complex situations; b) The intellectual independence to be academically and professionally engaged and current; c) The ethical behavior consistent with academic integrity and the use of appropriate guidelines and procedures for responsible conduct of research; and d) The ability to evaluate the broader implications of applying knowledge to particular contexts.Clearly communicate ideas verbally and in writing Demonstrate familiarity with the academic associations and publications within CMS as well as any additional fields relevant to their interests. May present practice-based research projects Deliver papers at national and international academic conferences Develop courses that could be offered at the undergraduate levelGraduate Symposium Dissertation Proposal requires a formal presentation of the dissertation project Other courses include the development of paper proposals, grant applications, and the submission of research essays and/or practice-based research. Other courses also include regular in-class discussions of readings along with the presentation of reports and papers. Acceptance of research papers at conferences. Submission (and acceptance) of written articles to academic journals and other publications (i.e. edited collections). Oral defense of comprehensive exam and dissertation by 91ɫ and external faculty members. 6. Awareness of limits of knowledgeAn appreciation of the limitations of ones own work and discipline, of the complexity of knowledge, and of the potential contributions of other interpretations, methods, and disciplines.Listen respectfully to the opinions expressed by others and demonstrate an ability to reflect critically on ones own presentations, and other course work Demonstrate awareness of the social and historical contingencies of various scholarly perspectives. Identify gaps in the field and make suggestions for how to address them.
