Individuals may also provide supplementary material to help in an assessment of suitability for appointment or re-appointment. Process of Recommendation The Graduate Programme Director is responsible for making recommendations to the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies on appointments, reappointments, and review of appointments. The recommendation of the Graduate Director is based on the assessment made by the Executive Committee of the Graduate Programme regarding the individual's suitability for appointment, re-appointment or a continuing appointment. This recommendation is made according to the criteria established by the Senate of 91ɫ, Faculty of Education Studies and the Graduate Programme in Critical Disability Studies, as specified below. The composition of the Executive Committee includes the Graduate Programme Director of Critical Disability Studies, three members selected by the Graduate Programme Council and one graduate student. Criteria for Appointment A. Criteria for appointment - general A candidate for appointment must: Hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree or have demonstrated achievements as an eminent researcher, scholar or professional in accordance with the expectations of a discipline (specified below). Demonstrate that he or she is continuing to make an international contribution to research or scholarship or professional activity in a form which is available for peer review and critical analysis; and Where previously engaged in graduate teaching or supervision, demonstrate excellence performance as an instructor and/or supervisor. This may include peer evaluation and student evaluation of teaching and curriculum design, taking into account such matters as the scholarly or creative content of teaching materials, the currency of such materials, the application of relevant research methodologies, the effectiveness of the individuals communication as a graduate teacher, and the use of appropriate pedagogic techniques. For supervision, this may include student and peer evaluation by, in particular, members of supervisory and examining committees of students supervised by the individual, taking into account such matters as the availability and effectiveness of the supervisor and his or her relative contribution to the quality of the students work and its completion within a reasonable time. Will contribute to the interdisciplinary breadth and depth of the program. B. Factors to be taken into account in applying criteria 1 . Normal means of demonstrating contribution to peer research, scholarship or professional activity will generally include: Peer-adjudicated publication Peer-adjudicated research grants Invited or peer-adjudicated presentations at conferences or symposia Other modes of presentation subject to peer review Other means of demonstrating contribution - contract research, provision of services that contribute to the development of the academic literature, discourse and analysis or professional practice in his or her field, provided: The work constitutes a significant scholarly or professional contribution to the field; and The results of the work are disseminated through a process which involves the equivalent of academic peer review; or The results of the work are publicly accessible and are submitted to peer-review by assessors agreed upon by the individual and the Director of Associate Director of the Programme. Other means of demonstrating contribution - awards and professional activity, such as: Artistic ability: films; sound recordings; exhibits; media presentations; Organization and direction of major conferences, symposia, festivals, etc.; Publication of non-refereed articles; contributions to the creative work of others; Invited presentations of creative works at festivals; Honours, awards or grants related to the field; Roles on outside professional, scholarly, or artistic organizations, directly related to the discipline, including editorial roles and/or advisory creative roles; Creation of multi-media works, software packages, etc.; Professional activity: applied work on social issues; consultants for community groups; bilateral, multinational and international agencies; reports; media appearances, etc. C. Reasonable expectations for this programme Given the interdisciplinary nature of the faculty. it is difficult to specify reasonable expectations. Given the high standards to which the programme aspires, it is reasonable to expect each member to be able to report, as a minimum, an average of one "contribution" as defined by the above per year, at least half of which should be peer-adjudicated. However, over the 7 -year period a single major achievement - such as an authored book - will be examined as substantial enough to satisfy this expectation. As long as the work is available for peer review, the programme wishes to make it clear that contributions to professional practice and demonstrated effective community outreach activity are valued as much as scholarly publication. Contributions of this sort must be of high standard and might include such work as the development and/or critique of policy analysis for governments, NGOs or advocacy groups. D. Additional criteria Given the nature of interdisciplinary programmes, the following additional criteria for re-appointment are essential: Evidence of continuing active involvement in the programme through teaching, supervision and/or committee service; Evidence that contributions noted above are relevant to the areas to specialization in the programme. E. Graduate teaching and supervision Criteria for satisfactory graduate teaching include evidence of effective communication of relevant theoretical and conceptual material. Satisfactory supervision also requires sufficient availability to students and evidence of an ability to effectively contribute to the quality of students' work and completion within a reasonable time. Means to assess satisfactory teaching and/or supervision include the written statement of teaching and supervisory responsibilities, student evaluations of the individual's teaching and supervision, and when available, additional comments of colleagues. F. Responsibility clarifications: Associate Members shall hold a tenure-track/tenured or contractually limited position at 91ɫ. They may teach graduate courses, act as the principal supervisor or advisor of an MRP and participate in decision-making processes in accordance with program governance procedures. Members Emeriti may act as co-supervisors of doctoral dissertations, act as supervisor or advisor of MRPs, serve on examining committees, teach graduate courses, and participate in decision-making processes in accordance with program governance procedures. Members Emeriti may continue ongoing principal supervisions of doctoral supervisions begun prior to retirement but may not take on new principal supervisions of doctoral dissertations. Provisions for Consultation and Reconsideration In situations in which the Executive Committee's assessment is that an individual not be appointed or that the appointment have limitations, the GPD must discuss this recommendation with the individual concerned. The individual may request reconsideration by the Executive Committee within 10 days, and submit any additional information, or appear personally before the Executive Committee. The decision made on reconsideration is the last one made at the level of the Graduate Programme, and it is then forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies for consideration.
