Preamble: Students are admitted to 91ɫs Universitys two-year MA Graduate Programme in Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) on an individual basis. The programme requires applicants to propose a plan of individualized study focused on a research project that engages three recognized scholarly disciplines or fields of academic and/or creative enquiry. Each application also identifies courses at the graduate level of potential value for undertaking the proposed research and suggests three graduate faculty who might serve as members of the applicants supervisory committee, each member representing one of the three disciplines or fields of enquiry constituting the applicants anticipated programme of study. The Director of IS interviews every applicant before they apply to the programme, either in person or by telephone, to advise on how best to meet these application requirements, including suggestions for possible courses and potential supervisors. Upon receipt of application files, the programmes Executive Committee (EC), which consists of eight faculty members serving in diverse disciplines and graduate programmes across the universitys various faculties, evaluates each file and where necessary proposes alternative supervisors to better represent the interdisciplinary interests of the applicants. The individualized nature of the IS graduate programme and of its conditions of admission prescribes a unique process for faculty appointment to and participation in the programme since IS does not have its own faculty and therefore does not appoint course instructors and offers only two of its own, programme specific courses. As indicated, however, three full supervisors are required by every IS student. All such appointments are based on student need. Supervisors in the programme are selected from the entire graduate faculty at 91ɫ in accordance with the supervisory requirements of entering students. Under normal circumstances, IS appoints supervisors from faculty listed as currently appointed to and active in the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS). Since each graduate programme at 91ɫ appoints faculty according to its own internal criteria, no single set of criteria determines the appointment of IS supervisors. Such appointments may be as Associate Members, Members Emeriti, or Adjunct Members, and either continuing or limited, depending on the nature of an appointees status in their home programme in accordance with the criteria established by FGS, Full Membersbeing a category reserved for Ph.D. programmes only. 2. Appointment Guidelines 2.1 IS Appointment Criteria (see 2.2 of FGSAP) (adapted from GPWS 2010) A candidate seeking appointment to the Graduate Program in Interdisciplinary Studies must meet the criteria listed below to be recommended for appointment. These procedures ensure that IS assesses the suitability of potential supervisors according to the same criteria used to appoint any present member of FGS. Such appointments may be of any status and continuing, limited or renewed, as required. 2.2. A candidate seeking appointment to the Graduate Program in Interdisciplinary Studies must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree 2.3 must demonstrate that they are continuing to make a contribution to research or scholarship or professional or artistic activity in a form which is available for peer review and/or critical analysis. 2.4 Description of Specific Characteristics and Types of Peer Adjudicated Work (see 2.2.2. of FGSAP): because of the interdisciplinary nature of IS, what is acknowledged as scholarly production may take multiple forms and appear in a wide variety of venues. Means of demonstrating contribution to research, scholarship, professional or artistic activity may include peer-adjudicated publications in their own disciplines/fields of research or interdisciplinary topics; peer-adjudicated research grants; invited presentations at conferences and symposia; curated, critically reviewed or peer appraised exhibitions or performances emphasizing disciplinary or interdisciplinary praxis, theories and/or politics; and any other mode of presenting similarly themed work in a public forum which has been subjected to a process of peer review. 2.5 Evidence of Continuing Contribution to Research and Scholarship (see 2.2.3 of FGSAP): IS recognizes that some forms of scholarly production require greater commitments of time, creative thought and resources than others, and some have greater impact because of their originality and their potential for opening up of news ways of knowing, thinking or seeing in interdisciplinary research and scholarship. 2.6 IS recognizes that professional research and scholarship contributions can be interrupted or slowed down by a range of different challenges that may include, for example, parenthood, illness, administrative responsibilities, community, political engagement, and/or a range of equity issues. 2.7 Where previously engaged in graduate teaching or supervision, an IS appointee should demonstrate satisfactory performance as an instructor and/or supervisor. i) The means of demonstrating satisfactory performance as a graduate teacher may include peer evaluation and student evaluation of teaching and curriculum design, taking into account such matters as the scholarly or creative content of teaching materials, the currency of such materials, the application of relevant research methodologies, the effectiveness of the individuals communication as a graduate teacher and the use of appropriate pedagogic techniques ii) The means of demonstrating satisfactory performance as a graduate supervisor may include student evaluation and peer evaluation by, in particular, members of supervisory and examining committee of students supervised by the individual, taking into account such matters as the availability and effectiveness of the supervisor and her or his timely contribution to the quality of the students work and to their chosen career path (i.e. writing letters of reference). iii) Where a candidate has no previous experience in graduate teaching or supervision, the candidate must demonstrate the potential to undertake graduate teaching or supervision (i.e., research publications record, teaching of upper-level undergraduate courses, sample graduate course outlines, substantial organization and participation in research colloquia). They may also simply be the most academically suitable candidate for the position. 2.8 The 91ɫ UAP 2020-2025 challenges us to act responsibly as members of a vast array of differing intersectional communities. Interdisciplinary Studies is a locus of the diversity of these intersectional communities. At its heart is the intersection of disciplines as well as the intersection of various sources, modes, and origins of knowledge. In so far as the criteria articulated here excludes experts in alternate forms of knowledge production, as opposed to more traditionally recognized modes of academic expertise, and to the extent that current standards potentially marginalize the expertise of individuals who are new to the university, who are engaged in non-traditional forms of knowledge production, whose knowledge and expertise may be rooted in lived experience and whose work is informed much more by this experience than long-established measures of academic excellence like publications, funded research projects, and academic conference papers, IS reserves the right to make arguments for such individuals as supervisors in the programme and to an individual students committee. 3) Appointment Categories and Terms 3.1) Associate Membership: Associate Members will normally be tenure track faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor, contractually limited positions at 91ɫ or tenured Faculty in other Graduate Programs who wish to establish an affiliation with the Graduate Program in Interdisciplinary Studies with limited responsibilities (See FGSAP Section 2.1). Associate Members will be expected to show promise of quality contributions to their scholarship/research. This potential may be evidenced through recent completion of a dissertation, awards, fellowships, publications, exhibitions, public lectures, performances and other presentation formats which are peer reviewed. Such members may also be the most appropriate supervisor and not a member of the graduate faculty at 91ɫ -- perhaps because their department has no graduate programme, or because they are newly appointed to 91ɫ and/or not as yet appointed to the graduate programme of their home unit, or because they are the sole member of the universitys faculty with the scholarly or creative expertise necessary to oversee a certain aspect of an IS students trialogical project, though not appointed to FGS by another graduate programme. In these cases, the programs Executive Committee will instruct the programme Director to provide a rationale to the Dean of Graduate Studies for their appointment to serve as a member of an IS students supervisory committee. 3.3) Members Emeriti: Members Emeriti are expected to demonstrate evidence of continuing contribution to research and scholarship that is based on the same criteria as Full Members. 3.4) Adjunct Membership (individuals who hold academic or professional positions external to 91ɫ) are expected to have a research profile demonstrating expertise that is relevant to their own disciplines and that demonstrates evidence of continuing contribution to research and scholarship that is equivalent to the standards of Full or Associate Membership. An Adjunct Member will not usually serve as a Coordinating Supervisor. 3.5) Extending an Appointees Service: in some, extraneous instances, IS may wish to extend an appointees service as graduate supervisor beyond the limited term granted by their home unit. 4. IS Review and Approval Process 4.1 As with all graduate programmes supervisors for IS students are expected to demonstrate an established record of achievement in research, scholarship, creative or professional activity appropriate to their respective academic, artistic or vocational fields of enquiry and expertise or the potential for such achievement. In addition, given the individualized nature of IS and of the conditions of admission to the programme, both the Director and the Executive Committee carefully assess the ability of potential supervisors to meet the particular needs of each student admitted. All three supervisory committee members are appointed as full supervisors and are primus inter pares, with one member serving as the chair of the committee in coordinating its work. 4.2 In all cases, the Director maintains regular and continual monitoring/review of all graduate supervision in the programme. This monitoring/review is carried out in two ways: 1) informally, by speaking with students currently registered in the programme; and 2), formally, through examination of written interim (fall) and annual (spring) progress reports, the former an exercise peculiar to IS, the latter as required of all graduate programmes by FGS. These reports are designed to indicate the effectiveness of the supervisory relationship. The Directors bi-annual reports to the Executive Committee include summary assessments of all graduate supervision in the programme. 4.3 Finally, it will be apparent that the programmes Executive Committee plays a key role in decisions regarding supervision in IS. The membership of this committee should be diverse in all possible ways. It should represent a mix of perspectives and expertise, lived experiences and academic skills, including those with visible and invisible group affiliations as well as historically, systemically, and persistently marginalized peoples in Canada.Membership on the Executive committee continues on both a revolving and an evolving basis. Individuals serve three-year terms and may be re-appointed. When a member declines re-appointment, goes on sabbatical or is otherwise unable to serve actively on the committee, current members and/or the Director propose potential replacements. The Director canvasses these nominees to insure they meet the requirements of this document and to insure the continuity and stability of the administration of the programs mandate. Peer review by expert assessors is used to judge the quality of research, writing and creative output in many disciplines, and is of great importance to the humanities and social sciences. It provides expert judgements that can form a basis for decisions whether to publish works of scholarship, or to fund proposed research or creative output.
