Eileen Chang
This course adopts contemporary literary theories such as life writing, translation studies, gender discourse, film and cultural studies to examine the major works of Eileen Chang, (Zhang Ailing, 1920-1995), one of the greatest modern Chinese writers of the twentieth century. Using different literary theories, such as Anthony Cordingley's notion of self-translation and Tonglin Lu's concept of gender and sexuality in twentieth-century Chinese literature, students analyze her short stories, essays and novels, as well as their recreations into various media in the socio-historical and geopolitical context of the modern and contemporary Chinese society. All texts are available in English. No knowledge of Chinese languages required.
Prerequisites: Any Chinese literature, film, or culture courses or by permission of the instructor.
