This study abroad course analyzes some of the major developments in the history of globalization throughout history with a focus on the nineteenth and twentieth century. Special attention will be given to the role played by port cities in the development of an interconnected world from the medieval period to the present. Based in Hamburg, Germany, one of the most important shipping and port cities of Europe, the course will include field trips, walking tours, and meetings with local historians and specialists. These tours together with on-site teaching will supplement classroom discussions and individual research projects to provide in-depth understanding of the major developments in the long history of globalization and connect local histories to key themes in global history.
