Professor Laura Allen

Professor Allen recently completed her doctorate at Ohio State University, specializing in Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy (RCL). Prior to that she achieved an MA in Digital Rhetoric and Professional Writing from Michigan State University, a qualification that makes her an especially good choice for those needing help with modern business and professional writing. As she pursued her PhD and Masters, she’s also gathered private sector experience, most notably at Yahoo, where she was able to apply her knowledge of language and composition. Whether it is a social media campaign or a traditional academic essay, there are few kinds of writing Dr. Allen is not already familiar with.

Her current research involves the role of digital media in the planning and sustenance of Black Family Reunions. Although like most she prefers her hobbies which include reading non-fiction books and getting involved in the community!

The Writing Centre prides itself on being a welcome and open space for students to come and receive the help and support they may need in their academic pursuits; in other words, it’s another community where she’s joyfully able to offer her aid.

It is such a pleasure to be able to work with students who book appointments at the Writing Centre, because it’s a different perspective than being in the classroom as a lecturer or as a professor,” explains Professor Allen.

She finds great joy in helping students, sharing her experiences and expertise to further unlock each student’s potential. "I can also have the space to give and share what I've learned,” she says, and her awareness of diverse rhetorical strategies and audiences is unparalleled. Be it language, diction, or writing; she’s sure to be a great help!

When it comes to booking appointments, Professor Allen wants students to know that she is ready to help them no matter where they are in their process.

You can come at any stage,” she says. “You could have a full draft and you just need a second set of eyes or someone to proofread and make sure you're making sense; the grammar is okay.”

But then,” continues Professor Allen, “you can also come where you have the biggest writers block in the world and you have nothing (a blank page) in front of you and the assignment prompt, and maybe the assignment is due in two days and you're trying to figure out what to do where to start how to get this thing done.”

Academic essay or digital media project, Professor Allen has the expertise to help you with any project requiring critical thought and conscious composition!

Start to finish, at any stage you’re welcome to use the resources the Writing Centre offers to aid you in your progress! To book a 50-minute appointment with Professor Allen or our other writing instructors, check out our One-to-One Appointment page. You have the option of meeting in-person or virtually from Monday – Saturday!

Need quick assignment help? You’re in luck! For one day only, the Writing Centre will hold a pop-up where students can drop in and receive academic writing help from a certified writing instructor!

On Monday, November 13, you can visit us any time from 11 AM – 3 PM. The first pop-up will be located at the East Bear Pit which is right in Central Square! You can’t miss it!

The Writing Centre pop-up is designed to be a flexible way for students to get writing help during the busy assignment season, especially since we’re almost at the end of the semester.

Post-reading week, students probably have a new set of assignments on the way, and are building up to final projects, said Writing Centre Director Jon Sufrin. It’s the perfect time to get some good advice on your next assignment at our Pop-up Drop-In.

Whether you’re working on a traditional essay, report, or digital assignment, our instructors are more than happy to walk you through the writing process. Within your 15-minute visit, you can ask all sorts of writing questions such as how to find sources, create an outline, or how to check citations.

As Sufrin states,

you know when you have that one question about a source, or a thesis, and you e-mail your TA and they just aren’t getting back to you? Drop-In is perfect for quick research and review for that assignment due @ 11:59PM today!

In addition, if you’re already deep in the writing stage, you can still visit the pop-up! A lot of our students visit the Centre to have an extra set of eyes look over their papers. Even showing a paragraph of what you wrote can go a long way!

On another note, if you can’t attend the pop-up days, don’t worry! Our one-to-one programming is available all year around—for the fall, winter, and summer terms. There’s also regularly scheduled drop-in help that’s virtually accessible on our website.

We also want students to know that we are on the 3rd Floor South Ross, and to make use of our teaching, said Sufrin. So the Pop-up is a quick way to get students to give us a try, and then hopefully register for a full session.

So come on by and visit the drop-in pop-ups! Students can drop-in anytime from 11 AM – 3 PM on Monday, November 13 at the East Bear Pit. It’s a great way to get some extra help on any assignment you’re working on!

Come one and all! The Writing Centre is open for the S2, and we’re hosting five workshops given by the WC Director, Professor Jon Sufrin! From strategies on how to best approach your assignments, to turning that draft from points to paragraphs, there is sure to be a strategy to benefit writers at any stage of their academic work!

Every Tuesday starting July 4 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., you can drop in on Zoom and join us! These workshops are tailor-made for students to benefit from and give them an opportunity to improve their writing skills. Our discussions will include methods to improve your writing assignments from start to finish. We’re proud to announce the following topics we’ll specifically be covering:

lecturer looking down at the podium in front of an audience
  • : What is your professor looking for? Find how to best approach your assignments and develop your ideas!
  • : Discover how to secure, analyze and use accurate sources! And how should you use new AI tools like ChatGPT in the university context—or should you at all? Come and find out!
  • : Make your arguments clear and direct. Elevate your writing by devising a university level thesis!
  • : Improve your transitions by taking advantage of signal phrases and learning to credit your sources both in-text and in references.
  • : Enhance your technique by identifying the best composing method for you. Discover your writing style to turn those points into paragraphs and into a full draft!

If you’ve got questions about academic writing, these workshops are fantastic learning opportunities,” said Professor Sufrin. “It doesn’t matter what year level you are at—you’ll learn something to help with your academic projects!”

These workshops are focused on academic writing, APA style, and the ethics of research in the 21st century. Each workshop focuses on an aspect of the writing process, so by the end you’ll have a new toolkit for your academic work.

If you’re looking for more personalized advice, you may be interested in the Writing Centre’s Drop-in Program! Available on Mondays and Thursdays from 12 - 2 p.m. Sessions will be hybrid and provide both, in-person and online support for quick question and answer sessions. You can access the in-person drop-in by going to S312 Ross (the Writing Centre classroom) or go to the Writing Centre’s Drop-in page and click on the Zoom link.

As James Robertson, Writing Coordinator, puts it,

Drop-in is a quick and easy way to get answers to short questions that can be handled in approximately 15 minutes. It is in addition a helpful adjunct to Writing Centre appointments that occur every week that you may make use of.”

Receive feedback specific to you and your assignments, so you can be confident in your submission. You can even ask about complex grammar practices and genre-specific phrases to help you in the future!

Are you stressed about exams? Say no more! At the LA&PS Exam Jam, you can drop by the Founder’s Assembly Hall (FC152) or the other activity rooms on April 5 from 11am – 4pm to get wellness and academic support!

The LA&PS Exam Jam is a student-focused event hosted by 91ɫ’s colleges (Vanier, Founders, McLaughlin, and New) and must needed student supports such as the Writing Centre, the Peer Mentor Network, PASS, SNACK, and other helpful on-campus resources.

As main organizer Andrew Fenech describes it,

we’re pairing these wellness activities with academic resources to provide just in-time support for students and connect them with key resources that we know are helpful as they finish off final assignments and exams.

During this event, the Writing Centre will support students in two spaces. At the Arthur Haberman Room (FC023), there will be writing instructors ready to help students with drop-in writing review. Just like our regular drop-in sessions, you can ask any writing question, whether it’s about your assignment or quick questions about academic writing conventions!

Meanwhile, in the main room (FC152), the Writing Centre will have an information booth where students can learn more about our programming!

Other than writing help, there will also be math and course-specific academic supports available at the LA&PS Exam Jam. In separate rooms, there is the study area (FC015A) where peer mentor leaders will hold an academic success workshop. And in the Founder’s Computer Lab (FC034), PASS and SNACK leaders will host review sessions to help students prepare for exams.

If you ever want to take a break, you can take part in the wellness activities available at any point of the event. If you feel like getting creative, you can paint, colour, make a stress ball, or even make balloon animals! There are also physical activities like quiet yoga available in McLaughlin College (MC140).

While taking part in these destressing activities, you can grab a free snack and meet with other students. If you have any questions, you can ask one of the peer mentor volunteers who would be more than happy to chat with you.

The goal is for the event to feel light, fun and overall supportive of students in their exam experience, says Fenech. It’s been challenging year for students returning to in-person learning and we know most of them are feeling burnt out as the year winds down, so we want to provide an event for them to simply enjoy themselves and see that there are folks from all across campus looking out for their success and wellbeing.

So come on down to the LA&PS Exam Jam! Students can drop by any time from 11am – 4pm on April 5 to get extra help—whether it’s academically, socially, or mentally— during this stressful end of the year season!

Over the Summer of 2022, the 91ɫ Writing Centre reviewed its programs and added new Instructors to better suit the needs of students. Over the next few months, we will be highlighting some of the writing experts and specialists at the Writing Centre so you can get to know them better and see how they support students at the Writing Centre!

As part of the Writing Centre’s Specialists blog series, today’s blog post will be highlighting the Writing Centre’s newest full-time writing instructor Professor Christopher Morris!

is an assistant professor in the Writing Department. He completed both an MFA and PhD from The Ohio State University, where he studied Creative Writing with a concentration on poetry and earned a PhD in Rhetoric, Composition, and literacy (RCL).

His special focuses are on rhetoric and professional and technical communications where he studies how organizations, businesses, and institutions communicate using written documentations.

In addition, he is also developing research on technical communications in the U.S. Housing development.

This expertise is useful for helping students who have to complete a variety of professional and academic writing assignments.

Likewise, if you have any writing assignments, feel free to book an appointment with Professor Morris! 91ɫ students from any academic discipline and year level can work together with Professor Morris to improve their writing.

Two people talking to each other

On a similar note, Professor. Morris feels inspired working with students because he received support from many educators during his studies.

I’ve been fortunate to have had several mentors in my own education, from grade school to graduate school, noted Professor Morris. My father is a primary school teacher, for example. They helped me to see that learning, reading, and writing are noble pursuits and essential skills that I try to impart to others.

As mentioned by Professor Morris, one of the reasons why he chose to work at 91ɫ was because this university makes sure everyone feels supported.

91ɫ is a leading research institution that provides ample support for students, faculty, and staff, he stated. 91ɫ also has a dedicated Writing Department that takes writing seriously and understands the importance of writing in education, business, and social change.

To book a 50-minute appointment with Professor Morris or any other writing instructor, students can visit the Writing Centre’s Live Appointments page where they can book (in-person or virtual) One-on-One help from Monday to Saturday!

Come check out our one-to-one appointments to receive writing support from a writing expert!

Want to get your writing published? online literary magazine Inventio is calling for creative pieces for their Spring issue 2.1!

Undergraduate students across all Ontario universities can send in a fiction, non-fiction or a poetry piece before March 17, 2023. Check out the simple submission details available on the

Led by this year’s Editor-in-Chief Lisa Grieve, Inventio brings together a community of talented student writers and editors to arrange each digital release. Although Inventio is not a formal part of the Writing Centre, it’s a writing resource we want more students to know about!

Inventio is a great place for students looking to get their writing out in the world, said Grieve.

Likewise, if your writing is selected to be part of the next upcoming issue, you get to work alongside an editor to make any changes to your submission before it gets released. Once the publication is out, your writing will be promoted on social media.

Our editing team works collaboratively with writers offering concrete and constructive feedback to help pieces become the best they can be, noted Grieve.

We not only edit and publish pieces, we also promote the writers and their work. Choosing to publish with Inventio is a unique way for students to complement their portfolio and help their CV stand out!

In addition, the writer-editor collaboration ensures that the writers are supported in the publication process. That was the conclusion of Nicholas Mohammed who was published in ԱԳپ’s Fall 2022 1.2 release.

The Inventio staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient, said Mohammed. I am appreciative of the care they took. They made me feel heard and comfortable throughout the entire editing process. Writing can make us feel vulnerable or overwhelmed and the Inventio staff was more than accommodating.

Hands on top of a keyboard

If you want to consider sending in an old creative assignment, you’re more than welcome to do so as long as it’s original and unpublished work. This is what Krista Gosselin did when she sent her fiction story for the latest issue.

I wrote this short story about cyborgs for a class in the summer, and I was very proud of the work I put into it, said Gosselin.

When Inventio presented me with the privilege to publish with them, she continued. I believed it was the perfect platform to showcase my writing. It was the best experience I could have asked for, and I feel so fortunate to have shared my first work of fiction with them!

So send your papers in! Inventio is a fantastic undergraduate student resource that can give you the opportunity to build your writing portfolio! If you’re interested in sending your writing, please do so before March 17. The formal release for the Spring Issue 2.1 is on April 25, 2023!
