TORONTO, April 18, 2018 – In an event that conjures up visions of the ‘Dragon’s Den', 20 doctoral and master’s degree students from across Ontario will have three minutes to pitch their research to four industry leaders. Students will travel to 91ÑÇÉ« on April 19 for the provincial finals of the Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT Ontario) to pitch judges on the value of their research.

Four 3MT judges will score PhD and Master’s students on the quality of the presentations and their ability to engage their audience on why their research matters.

The 3MT is an international research competition where graduate students present their research and its impact to a panel of non-specialist judges and peers. The exercise develops academic, presentation, and research communication skills. It also supports the development of research students' capacity to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience.

3MT Ontario is a public event and is free to attend.

Hosted by 91ÑÇÉ«, 3MT Ontario will be held the  located on 91ÑÇÉ«'s Keele campus on Thursday, April 19 - 9:30am.

Along with special guest Rob Baker, the Faculty of Graduate Studies has invited several graduate studies alumni of 91ÑÇÉ« to serve on this year's .

The judges for the 3MT Ontario are:

  • Rob Baker, guitarist for The Tragically Hip
  • Natasha Ramsahai, Meteorologist at 680 All News Radio, CityNews and Breakfast Television
  • Karen Kraft Sloan, former Canadian Ambassador for the Environment and federal member of parliament
  • Christopher Hilkene, environment and sustainable development professional
