June 1, 2026, TORONTO 鈥� Birthed from a 1969 uprising as a response to police violence at a New 91亚色 City dive bar called the Stonewall Inn, Pride has grown into a global movement, with Toronto-area celebrations among the largest in the world. Drawing on years of community-engaged research and large-scale data sets, 91亚色 researchers are available to talk to media about historical struggles and current issues facing those in 2SLGBTQIA+ communities today.

Antony Chum

  (he/him, they/them) is the Canada Research Chair in Population Health Data Science and an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology & Health Science, Faculty of Health. His research focuses on LGBTQ+ health disparities and the structural determinants of health among marginalized populations, such as low-income, racialized, and gender-diverse groups. By applying quasi-experimental approaches to large-scale population datasets drawn from Census, linked health administrative, and international sources, Chum generates population-level evidence on how structural barriers and public policies shape health and related social and economic outcomes.

颁丑耻尘鈥檚 , "Beyond the Gender Binary: Wage Inequality and Occupational Segregation among Transgender and Nonbinary Workers," utilizes data from the 2021 Canadian Census, the first national census in the world to collect and identify data on transgender and nonbinary individuals. The study found significant employment and wage gaps, with transgender and nonbinary individuals being eight to 14 per cent less likely to be employed than cisgender men and earn 20 to 30 per cent lower hourly wages on average. Even after adjusting for demographic, occupational, and industrial factors, a substantial earnings gap remains, hitting nonbinary individuals assigned female at birth the hardest.

Jin Haritaworn

is an expert of gay imperialism, homonationalism and pinkwashing. They have studied the gentrification and securitization of the Church-Wellesley Village and look critically at the incorporation of Pride into the neoliberal city. They also explore queer of colour maps and counter-archives. Haritaworn is Associate Professor of Gender, Race and Environment in the Faculty of Environment and Urban Change. They locate their work in the tradition of activist scholarship, which attempts to be in the service of communities. Their research deals with landscapes that are shaped by racial and colonial capitalism, where celebration and incorporation exist alongside pathologization and criminalization. Their first two books, and , explore how certain mixed-race and LGBT subjects became desirable in a context of war on terror, neoliberal multiculturalism and the global city in London and Berlin.

Tom Hooper

(he/him) is a historian of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in Canada and a professor with the department of equity studies in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS). His research includes exploring the 1981 bathhouse raids in Toronto where more than three hundred gay men were arrested and criminally charged for their sexuality, with a focus on the community resistance to these raids both on the streets and in the courts. Hooper critically examined the construction of dominant queer historical narratives, including the myth that legal changes in 1969 represented the decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada. Hooper also investigated the use and misuse of heritage grants provided to 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations.

Nick Mul茅

(he/him) is a professor in the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women鈥檚 Studies and the School of Social Work, LA&PS. He teaches sexual activism, and social justice. His research areas include advocacy, and the social inclusion 鈥� and exclusion 鈥� of gender and and sexually diverse populations (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, two-spirit, genderqueer, intersex, queer, questioning 鈥� 2SLGBTQIA+) in social policy and service provision and the degree of recognition of these populations as distinct communities in cultural, systemic and structural contexts. Mul茅 also engages in critical analysis of the 2SLGBTQIA+ movement and the development of queer liberation theory. Mul茅 is currently leading a national research project on poverty in 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, the first national study of its kind.

Danielle Howard

In 2018, a U.S. conservative news commentator said that LeBron James should just 鈥渟hut up and dribble,鈥� after the NBA star gave his views about then-President Donald Trump in an ESPN podcast. 

Those comments inspired a documentary by the same name that explored the social and political influence of NBA players through the history of the league, which in turn was an inspiration for AMPD Assistant Professor 鈥檚 latest research at the intersection of race, sport and performance. 

鈥淭he documentary got me thinking, does dribbling have more to say about politics, about Black life, then we have initially given it credit for?鈥� 

Howard is working on a book called Making Moves: Race, Basketball, and Embodied Resistance that spans the twentieth and twenty-first centuries of basketball history. She examines America鈥檚 history of white supremacy and how comments like 鈥渟hut up and dribble鈥� reflect a continued dismissal of Black lives and experiences, images of the Black body on display through history from slave auctions to NBA drafts and how audience and media surveillance impacts movement. 鈥淭he majority of bodies in the NBA are Black. So from a media standpoint, the majority of the media consumption we have of basketball is represented by Black bodies.鈥�

She also looks at how Black athletes speak with their bodies, and how politics, history and social movements are embodied in athleticism, from the New 91亚色 Renaissance basketball team to present times.

鈥淏lack performance in sport is not merely aesthetic, it has potential and purpose to be disruptive to the political and to ultimately incite change and liberation.鈥�

J-Rebel

A half century after the birth of Hip-Hop among mostly Black and Latino, working-class youth in the South Bronx, breaking makes its debut as an Olympic sport. For longtime breaker  (Joseph Hersco) from the Supernaturalz Crew, who helped develop and co-taught a course on the art of breaking at 91亚色 with AMPD dance professor Mary Fogarty, he鈥檒l be watching the competition on Aug. 9 and 10 with a mix of emotions and criticisms. 

鈥淭here is a political side of Hip-Hop 鈥� it comes out of particular socio-economic conditions, right? I think a lot of that can easily get washed out, when the focus is around just who's winning in the competition,鈥� says J-Rebel, who lives and works in the Jane and Finch community in Toronto. 鈥淏ut those things are intertwined in breaking 鈥� the politics, the cultural aspects, race, class and gender.鈥� 

J-Rebel, who teaches kids breaking and has travelled the world by competing in international breaking competitions comparable to the caliber we will see at the Olympics, picked up the practice himself decades ago with peers and in community centres in Jane and Finch, Lawrence Heights and Malvern where he grew up and lived. He says that while breaking is more accessible to the youth in his community 鈥� predominantly low-income and working-class 鈥� than a sport like hockey or football, there are still barriers to who might be able to compete at the highest level due to social inequalities that are still present in many communities in Toronto. 

鈥淚t's not necessarily a predetermined thing because youth from these particular places have become resilient out of necessity, but your proximity to privilege and having resources is going to give you a better chance at developing your competencies.鈥�

Martin Breaugh

France was on shaky grounds ahead of the Olympics, politically speaking, but the ruling parties dodged a bullet in the snap election by blocking the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) party from taking power, says Professor  in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies and an expert in French politics.  

鈥淭he presence of RN ministers at the Olympics would have been an impossible situation to manage with the potential of athletes boycotting such ministers, as well as local officials and maybe even delegations from elsewhere, especially the former French colonies, doing the same,鈥� he says.

Lyndsay Hayhurst 

For 15 years, Faculty of Health Associate Professor has been collaborating with self-identified women and youth in Canada, Uganda and Nicaragua to investigate the role of sport for social justice and 鈥榙evelopment鈥�. This includes examining cycling as a possible catalyst for achieving mobility justice and gender equity; investigating how community sport for development programs may create novel possibilities for feminist climate-justice activism; and addressing physical inactivity among marginalized youth and women (cis and trans) through the use of trauma-and violence-informed approaches.

鈥淲e're arguing that these , and that certainly flies in the face of some of the approaches to coaching and sport that we sometimes see are taken up at the Olympics,鈥� says Hayhurst, also the 91亚色 Research Chair in Sport, Gender and Development & Digital Participatory Research.

Study lead and equity policy expert available for interviews听

听TORONTO, May 21, 2021 鈥�听Most Black Canadians regularly experience racism, whether it is in criminal justice, education, employment, health care, or in the recently added COVID-19 pandemic scenario, a 91亚色-led ongoing survey reveals.

鈥淭his experience is not new, but because Black Canadians are typically classified under the larger visible minority group, their unique challenges have always been undermined,鈥� says in the School of Public Policy & Administration, who led the study as part of the Blackness in Canada project.

Nearly 13,000 respondents 鈥� both Blacks and non-Blacks 鈥� participated in the one-of-its-kind national survey that combined traditional and modern (online / wiki survey) methods of data collection.

The was released today revealing the study results, while the online survey will be open until June 1.

Within the survey, Black Canadians gave a series of recommendations that they feel would best address systemic racism in the country.听 Among them, a call for more educational opportunities for Black Canadians, more anti-racism education in schools, and amendments to the Police Services Act to allow for independent watchdog agencies and harsher penalties for racist conduct by police.

The national survey, which began on March 21, is being conducted by 91亚色's Institute for Social Research that Foster leads, in partnership with the and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

TORONTO, May 13, 2021 鈥� 91亚色鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) is co-hosting a Virtual Reality (VR) tour of the remounted Art Gallery of Ontario exhibition Tunirrusiangit: Kenojuak Ashevak and Tim Pitsiulak Revisited, May 14, from 4 to 5 p.m.

Art history and her curatorial students will be conducting the tour, organized as part of the monthlong , produced by Educators in VR. AMPD also will be present.

During the in 2018, the AGO showcased art by Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak and her nephew Tim Pitsiulak at its largest exhibition space, the Sam & Ayala Zacks Pavilion. The current remounted exhibition is presented in virtual space, through a collaboration among the AGO, AMPD鈥檚 Mobilizing Inuit Cultural Heritage (MICH) project and , a novel platform for virtual art exhibits and collecting started by artist and entrepreneur, Brendon McNaughton.

The virtual exhibition was created by Hudson鈥檚 curatorial studies class during this winter semester, addressing the pandemic closures.

鈥淰irtually meeting my students and invited speakers in our collaboratively curated VR exhibition has been magical,鈥� says Hudson, who is also MICH project鈥檚 principal investigator. 鈥淒espite COVID-19 lockdown, we bonded across cultures, race, geography, and generations, and talked about our collective reckoning of settler-Indigenous relations.鈥�

Bay-Cheng points out that the international art market is moving towards the virtual space when people can鈥檛 or won鈥檛 travel the same. 鈥淏ut more importantly, this provides expanded access, including to the communities who might not be able to attend an exhibit at the AGO in Toronto.

鈥淚t also highlights the need for robust internet access in rural communities, including Indigenous, Inuit and First Nations here in Canada, and around the word. There鈥檚 a question of digital inequality that we鈥檙e committed to solving, in part by highlighting the potential and the opportunities for these kinds of projects to reach a wider and more inclusive community,鈥� Bay-Cheng adds.

Alston was UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial executions (2004-10), Chairperson of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1991-98), Independent Expert on reform of the UN human rights treaty body system (1989-97), Special Advisor to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the Millennium Development Goals (2004-07), a member of the Security Council Commission of Inquiry on the Central African Republic, and he participated in the Independent International Commission on Kyrgyzstan.

One of the most consistent and telling lines of criticism of the international human rights movement in recent years is that it has had all too little to say in response to the rise of neoliberal economic policies, especially as inequality has grown dramatically. While states and international organizations have been key players in shaping this response, non-governmental organizations have also played a leading role.听This lecture considers the contribution made by Human Rights Watch, a successful and influential organization whose policies have been the subject of little scholarly analysis.

TORONTO, Oct. 26, 2020听鈥� Whoever they vote for, Americans who are trusting are more likely to cast their ballot on Nov. 3 鈭� or earlier 鈭� than Americans who do not trust easily, 91亚色 predicts.

He explains that people with low trust levels are less interested in politics, so they are less inclined to vote.

鈥淭his also means Southerners are less likely to vote in the upcoming elections,鈥� says Wu, who has analyzed voting patterns for every U.S. presidential election since 1948. 鈥�The internal migration between the north and the south does not change Americans鈥� trust in others, and it will have very little impact on their voting behaviour.鈥�

Annual event supported by Centre for Jewish Studies at 91亚色

TORONTO, Oct. 22, 2020听鈥揟he Canadian Jewish Literary Awards is honouring nine outstanding Jewish themed works this year, with an online presentation ceremony on Oct. 25, at 2p.m.

Now in its sixth year, the Awards program recognizes Jewish writing in fiction, biography, Jewish thought and culture, poetry, history, books for children and youth, Yiddish, scholarship, and Holocaust categories.

鈥淭he Canadian Jewish Literary Awards has become an important part of the Canadian Jewish and cultural calendars, with the support of 91亚色, a welcoming home for books, creative endeavors, and scholarly achievement,鈥� said the Jury Chair, Edward Trapunski. 鈥淭he at 91亚色 provides the infrastructure so that the Awards can thrive and succeed.鈥�

Annually, the celebratory event had been organized at the Tribute Communities Recital Hall at 91亚色, attracting audiences and authors from around the world. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the presentation ceremony has gone virtual, and will be available at the through its YouTube channel.
