Students from high schools in the multi-cultural Jane-Finch area of Toronto are asking to listen and be heard as they take part and share their perspectives on the world by reading their poetry at the prestigious Congress 2023 academic conference hosted by 91亚色 May 27 to June 2.

Kamahary Mohamed, 16, said her poem,I hear myself speaking,鈥 came to her on a day she felt she wasn鈥檛 being listened to, and that she hopes it helps those who hear it understand her experience as a Black teenager living in a racially diverse neighbourhood.

鈥淪omebody else that鈥檚 not Black may not understand my struggles and I feel like at least with poetry you can put down feelings on paper and give people kind of a gateway to understand what it feels like,鈥 said the Grade 10 student at Emery Collegiate Institute.

Kamahary Mohamed, a Grade 10 student at Emery Collegiate Institute, shares her poem, "I hear myself speaking," with fellow high school students visiting 91亚色.

Mohamed is one of several students who answered the call to submit poetry on the theme of 鈥楻eckonings and Re-imaginings鈥 at this year鈥檚 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The largest academic conference in Canada will engage more than 9,000 scholars, graduate students, policymakers and community members in an important dialogue about building a world that is safe, equitable and sustainable.

Four participating high schools recommended five senior students who identify as Black or Indigenous to attend two of Congress 2023鈥檚 : former Governor General Micha毛lle Jean鈥檚 lecture about 鈥楻e-Imagining Black Futures鈥 and Indigenous filmmaker Alanis Obamsawin鈥檚 talk, 鈥楽eeds of the Future: Climate Justice, Racial Justice, and Indigenous Resurgence.鈥 Afterward, each speaker will meet the students for a private lunch and conversation.

The high schools are located in the Jane-Finch area adjacent to 91亚色鈥檚 Keele Campus. One of Toronto鈥檚 most racially diverse communities, the area is populated by a high proportion of youth, refugee and immigrant families. To reflect the neighbourhoods and people around it at the highly anticipated conference, 91亚色 partnered with the community to come up with ideas to have their perspectives reflected over the six-day event.

鈥淭his is the best kind of outreach,鈥 said 91亚色 Prof. Andrea Davis, who is the academic convenor for Congress 2023. 鈥淲e want to show students they have a voice and a future, while breaking down walls between academia and our wider communities.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 part of our larger commitment to demonstrating what it means to be a place-based university adjacent to the Jane-Finch community. 91亚色 and the Jane-Finch community both emerged in the mid-20th century and our location makes us both unique and co-dependent. As a university, we have a commitment to serve the communities adjacent to our campus and to deal with them ethically and honestly,鈥 she said.

The students will be paired with undergraduate students who also attended high school in their neighbourhood, meeting twice before the conference to build connections.

鈥淚t鈥檚 so important to give Black people the opportunity to actually see the University,鈥 Mohamed says of the opportunity to imagine a better future. 鈥淲hen you tell somebody that there鈥檚 nothing for you long enough, they will believe you, and when there are people telling kids that they are worthless and useless, thugs, they listen.鈥

Alecia Roach, 17, a Grade 12 student at Downsview Secondary School, said she 鈥渨ants to soak in the experience鈥 of the event and to be inspired and motivated in her future by 鈥減eople who are successful that look like us.鈥

Opportunities to have a platform on a post-secondary campus like 91亚色 and to absorb the insights of people at the conference on how to build a more equitable and sustainable world are motivating, she said.

Alecia Roach, a Grade 12 student at Downsview Secondary School, reads her poem, "The Empire has Risen," when high school students participating in Congress 2023 visited 91亚色 in May.

鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely important in terms of exposure 鈥 it exposes the youth to something new and, especially for Black youth, it helps us to question and really realize these things are achievable and don鈥檛 let anybody try to downplay what you鈥檙e doing,鈥 Roach said.

Saraya Elwin, principal at Downsview Secondary School, said she was inspired in her own life by Davis, one of the few Black teachers she encountered when she studied at 91亚色 as an international student many years ago. Elwin said she chose to stay and work in the Jane-Finch community, which she says is often stereotyped by negative media attention, but has a lot to offer.

鈥淭here鈥檚 so much greatness that comes out from these so-called priority neighbourhoods but we tend to dwell on the pockets where there is violence,鈥 Elwin said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of hidden potential and sometimes you forget that because there鈥檚 so much bad news.鈥

Elwin said it鈥檚 important for teenagers living near the University to be given opportunities to spend time on campus and experience what it could be like for them.

鈥淵oung people are sometimes scared of the unknown. They know the campus exists but a lot of them sometimes feel they don鈥檛 have the grades and they鈥檙e not good enough 鈥 and they actually do have the grades and they are good enough,鈥 she said.

She hopes that those who have the opportunity to attend Congress spread the word to their friends about what they saw and heard there.

鈥淲hat I hope is that the students who go to the Congress will let the ones know about the amazing opportunities that are available at the school so the Grade 11s and 10s and so forth can have that as a stepping stone.鈥

For the first time in four years, Canada鈥檚 largest academic gathering 鈥 the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences (Congress) 鈥 will be held in person from May 27 to June 2 at 91亚色 in Toronto.

Organized in partnership with the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (the Federation), this 92nd edition of Congress will bring together 9,000 scholars, graduate students, community members, and policymakers on one of Canada's most diverse campuses to hold vital conversations about the most pressing issues facing the world today.

鈥淪ince its inception, 91亚色 has been committed to its core values of advancing social justice and equity and championing diversity and inclusivity. Congress 2023 will provide a critical forum to reflect and act on these values, and to better understand the intersectional complexities of race, gender, Indigenous and geopolitical issues as we seek to advance our combined impact on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,鈥 says Rhonda Lenton, 91亚色 president and vice-chancellor. 鈥淚'm thrilled that Congress attendees and our community members will have the opportunity to see those values in action throughout the coming days. I鈥檓 grateful to Professor Andrea Davis for her leadership in ensuring that Congress 2023 tackles some of the most complex and pressing societal issues of our time.鈥

This year鈥檚 theme, , invites attendees to place Black and Indigenous knowledges, cultures, and voices at the heart of Congress discussions, as a lens through which to reckon with the past and re-imagine the future. Behind this vision is Academic Convenor Andrea Davis, Professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at 91亚色, who believes this call to action is paramount in sparking conversations that are meaningful, rather than performative.

鈥淧ositive change begins by having open, honest and sometimes difficult conversations that encourage us to expand our vision of the university and the world, and to pursue a future that embraces freedom and justice. At Congress this year, we are seeking to open doors to a better future that commits to decoloniality, anti-racism, justice, sustainability and equity,鈥 says Davis.

For this Congress, Dr. Davis also wanted to engage with the university鈥檚 surrounding community, making sure their voices are heard, while breaking down walls between academia and the wider society. In one such initiative, twenty-one high-school students from the Jane-Finch community who identify as Black or Indigenous will attend two of Congress 2023鈥檚  as well as a private lunch with former Governor General the Right Honourable Micha毛lle Jean, and Indigenous filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin.

This community engagement effort is part of a broader set of initiatives aimed at shifting the culture of Congress, against the backdrop of the Federation鈥檚 commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization (EDID).

鈥淲e committed to making Congress more equitable, diverse, and inclusive for all members of our community, and we鈥檝e been working hard to make that happen,鈥 said Gabriel Miller, President and CEO of the Federation. 鈥淭here is no better place, or better partner than 91亚色 to help us effect this type of change, and we look forward to writing this new chapter in the history of Congress.鈥

Congress 2023 will commence on May 27 with a community opening celebration , followed by 68 scholarly conferences and 200+ open events over the course of seven days.

The time is right to work collaboratively to imagine a more just world

As Prof. Andrea Davis prepares for her role as academic convenor for Canada鈥檚 largest gathering of scholars this spring at 91亚色, she reflects on Congress 2023鈥檚 theme, and how it informs the decisions we need to make as a society to ensure we can 鈥榣ive well together鈥 as the University Academic Plan calls on us to.

Davis says the theme 鈥榬eckonings and re-imaginings鈥 asks us to consider the deep significance of the crossroads in which we now stand.

As we emerge out of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are asked to contemplate, with a sense of urgency, the lessons learned from Truth and Reconciliation, Black Lives Matter, the evidence of Indigenous children buried at former residential schools, the death of George Floyd and more recently Tyre Nichols, mass protests in the streets for racial justice, and increasing calls for awareness about climate change and the state of the planet.

Andrea Davis
Andrea Davis, Academic Convenor for Congress 2023, says 91亚色 is the right university to provide the platform for pressing discussions about how a better world might be created.

鈥淲e cannot simply pretend that our world has not been shaken 鈥 if not altered 鈥 in some fundamental way by the events of the last three years,鈥 Davis says. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 think 91亚色 could host a Congress that didn鈥檛 attempt to address some of these questions.鈥

鈥淯niversities, their students and graduates, academics, writers and thinkers have a responsibility,鈥 Davis argues, 鈥渢o attend to these lessons, to decipher what they have taught us, and to offer our societies a language, a grammar, for thinking through and beyond the crises of our times.鈥

When up to 8,000 academics from 67 academic associations representing a rich spectrum of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences gather in person at 91亚色 for the first time since the pandemic, Davis invites attendees to not only reflect on the lessons we have learned, but also to begin the work of enacting the terms under which a radically different world might be created.

鈥淲hat might it mean for us to commit to knowing and caring for each other across our differences,鈥 Davis asks, 鈥渦nderstanding that the world we want to live in tomorrow is dependent on the action we take together today?鈥

In fact, 91亚色鈥檚 academic plan includes a university-wide challenge to elevate the University鈥檚 contributions to the United Nation鈥檚 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Serving as a blueprint for action, it is positioning the 91亚色 community as an agent of positive change in a world facing a convergence of unprecedented trials from climate change, a global pandemic, poverty, systemic inequality and political polarization.

Student and faculty engagement in 91亚色鈥檚 UN SDG challenge has sparked discussion about the relationship between equity and sustainability.

Davis wonders if we can reimagine a new set of social relationships grounded in decoloniality, anti-racism, and justice, and what kinds of strategies to address climate change or advance the UN Sustainable Development goals might be produced when we view these challenges through the lens of racial justice and Indigenous resurgence.

Davis says 91亚色 is the right university to provide the platform for these pressing discussions.

鈥淪ocial justice is at the core of what we say we do, at the core of what we say we care about. We鈥檙e a social justice university, and we鈥檙e also one of Canada鈥檚 most diverse universities. The time is right. The setting demands that we not only be involved but that we lead.鈥

"If, as 91亚色 says, we're going to right the future, it is now time for universities to be bold."

In many ways it鈥檚 also fitting for Davis to be tasked with providing the vision for Congress 2023.

Born in Jamaica as a descendent of the formerly enslaved, she came to Canada in 1989 as a graduate student, only six years after Canada鈥檚 last racially segregated school closed, and still nearly two decades before the Indian Residential School system ended.

It was on 91亚色鈥檚 campus 鈥 long before we were one of Canada鈥檚 most diverse universities 鈥 that Davis began a transition from being a student and young woman living in Jamaica to being a Black feminist in Canada.

鈥淚 remember the first time I was on campus, and just feeling like I was in a sea of white faces,鈥 she recalls. 鈥淚 had never been outside of my country before that first trip, so that was entirely new to me.鈥

She says, she became a visible minority for the first time and was 鈥渕inoritized鈥 at the same time as she became 鈥渉yper visible.鈥

鈥淚n my classes, for example, as the only Black woman, if there was a day I was not there,  everybody knew, and every time I opened my mouth everybody stopped and listened carefully, so I couldn鈥檛 hide. My body made me hyper visible at the same time as my history made me invisible.鈥

Even though she had studied literary criticism at the University of the West Indies immersed in the works of Black writers, coming to Canada made the discourse of race real.

During this time, Davis began to appreciate the enormous power that knowledge holds, and the role universities play as gatekeepers of that knowledge.

鈥淯niversities have to decide what knowledge they will privilege, and equally as important, to what ends that knowledge will be used,鈥 she says.

University students, Davis points out, have historically led the charge when it comes to transforming knowledge into positive change, citing several examples.

In 1968, students at San Francisco State College, led by the Black student union, went on strike for five months to demand the creation of Black studies and ethnic studies programs. During the same period, 400 students occupied a computer lab in protest of anti-Black racism at Montreal鈥檚 Sir George William University (now Concordia University). Thousands of South African students marched in 1976 to protest the imposition of Afrikaans as a language of instruction in schools.

In 2016, at 91亚色, Davis witnessed students demanding meetings with their Dean, and the University President and Provost, calling for more diverse curricula that reflected the interests of an increasingly diverse student body and the hiring of more Black faculty.

From these conversations began the development of a Black Canadian Studies Certificate that launched in 2018, deliberately situated in the Department of Humanities rather than the social sciences, Davis explains, seeking to centre the thoughts, ideas, theories, histories and expressive cultures of Black peoples in Canada, and Black knowledges as valuable in and of themselves, not merely as a tool for anti-racism or anti-bias training.

Davis points to the popularity of this certificate as underscoring the importance of this kind work in universities.

"We must provide spaces for studying and theorizing the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality and geographic location, and how these intersect with power and affect the lives of marginalized peoples everywhere."

For Davis, this requires an acceptance that such theorizing is not just about participating in knowledge production, but also about transforming the core character of the academy and the societies in which we live.

She acknowledges that educational institutions in Canada have played a role in the violent histories of colonization and slavery, and that the humanities and social sciences have helped to entrench racist assumptions of Black and Indigenous people.

鈥淯niversities, therefore, have much to learn, and unlearn,鈥 Davis says.

Davis says that, rather than existing in a privileged vacuum, universities are deeply informed by the historical, socio-cultural and political contexts that frame their existence. 91亚色鈥檚 main Keele Campus, for example, is located adjacent to the Jane-Finch community, one of Toronto鈥檚 most culturally and racially diverse neighbourhoods.

鈥91亚色鈥檚 core values of excellence, sustainability and social justice must be informed by this socio-cultural context.鈥

91亚色鈥檚 unique context has informed a great deal of Davis鈥 scholarship, research and leadership at the University, no more than recently when, following George Floyd鈥檚 2020 killing by a police officer in Minneapolis, the Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies appointed Davis special advisor on anti-Black racism strategies for 91亚色.

鈥淚 agreed to do it because it was really impossible to say no,鈥 she says. 鈥淭he moment demanded that I couldn鈥檛 stay on the sidelines and pretend this reckoning wasn鈥檛 happening. But from the beginning, I have been trying to intervene in these questions of anti-Black racism through the humanities.鈥

The same approach has shaped her vision for Congress 2023, a joint partnership between 91亚色 and the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

鈥淲e鈥檝e chosen strategically to centre the voices, experiences, histories and cultures of Indigenous and Black peoples,鈥 Davis explains, 鈥渁nd to sit with those knowledges, and be guided by those knowledges, as we imagine new pathways towards a better future.鈥

Researchers and graduate students in disciplines including literature, history, theatre, film, education, music and sociology will present research and ideas through panels, keynote lectures, the Big Thinking series, career corner workshops, and 91亚色 open programming 鈥 all intended to create positive change through the lens of Indigenous and Black histories, culture and knowledges.

Informed by 91亚色鈥檚 place in its community and society, Congress 2023 will also take the opportunity to invite into the University, and into these conversations, local community members, artists, activists, high school students, teachers, parents, families, university staff, alumni, retirees and friends.

鈥淚n the academy and the world, we tend to turn to Indigenous and Black people, their thought, their ideas only when we think they can teach us something 鈥 how can I learn from you to be a better person? How can I help to facilitate your inclusion in the project of world making as it currently exists?鈥 says Davis. 鈥淏ut what might it mean,鈥 she continues 鈥渢o understand Indigenous and Black thought as indispensable to all the work of the humanities and social sciences?鈥

With an eye toward growing the understanding of the power of Black and Indigenous peoples鈥 voice, art and imagination, Davis looks forward to Congress 2023 where the hard work of shifting the goals of knowledge production toward a more just world will begin.
