TORONTO, Aug. 20, 2020 鈥 By Saturday, humanity will have overdrawn its ecological account for the year. Known as , it鈥檚 the day when humans will have used as much from the Earth as the planet can renew in a year.听 91亚色 produces the data that informs this calculation.

The good news is that Earth Overshoot Day this year 鈥 August 22 鈥 arrives 21 days later than in 2019.听 Coronavirus-induced lockdowns around the world have reduced the burning of fossil fuels and reduced wood harvests. Even so, the world will demand more from nature than can be renewed this year.

91亚色 has partnered with the to calculate the Ecological Footprint and Biocapacity of every nation on the planet.听 This data is needed to determine Earth Overshoot Day.

鈥淎t a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has shown us the true scale of our global interconnectedness, we have an opportunity to leverage partnership and collaboration to overcome complex global challenges like inequality, COVID-19, and of course, climate change,鈥 says President & Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. 鈥91亚色 is proud to provide leadership through an international research collaboration like the Ecological Footprint initiative that helps countries determine whether they are on track to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, and gives us the data to calculate Earth Overshoot Day.鈥

headshot of Eric Miller, FESEric Miller leads a team of researchers and graduate students in 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Environmental Studies to produce the for the , a Canadian not-for-profit organization.

Miller and his team measure the carbon footprint, the amount of built-up land or urban sprawl, how much forest is used for timber and paper, how much cropland and pasture is used to produce food and the amount of seafood fished every year. 听These all add up to humanity鈥檚 Ecological Footprint.

Since 1970, humanity鈥檚 Ecological Footprint has overshot the capacity of nature to sustain it.听 The resulting ecological debt has been an in the atmosphere and .

鈥淎s we emerge from the pandemic, we must rebuild our economies for well-being and sustainability.听 We need regenerative economies that use natural resources at rates that can be sustained,鈥 says Miller.

91亚色鈥檚 measurement of the Ecological Footprint helps to inform individuals, communities, and governments to make better decisions on how to better manage resources, reduce economic risk and improve well-being.

Researchers and students, who work on the accounts at 91亚色, are available to discuss the Ecological Footprint or Earth Overshoot Day.

TORONTO, Aug. 05, 2020 鈥 Cormorants can engender strong feelings, but 91亚色 biologist says, they have been unfairly maligned. She suggests there are better ways to manage this aquatic bird than the current sanctioned cull expected to go ahead this fall.

CormorantAnyone familiar with the tree nesting species of cormorants knows their droppings can kill their host trees and the surrounding vegetation, however, Fraser, who has studied these native birds for years, says this is part of the natural ecological process and the effect is highly localized.

Fraser says she would like to see population targets or modelling done first to show whether a cull is needed, and if so, what the per day bird limit for each hunter should be to achieve the goal. With the current 15 birds per day limit, she is worried the hunt could remove the entire breeding population in Ontario.

鈥淎 significant reduction of the cormorant population in Ontario may have repercussions for other species, such as the recovering population of bald eagles,鈥 says Fraser of the Faculty of Environmental Studies. 鈥淐ormorants have, for example, made up a large portion of the prey for bald eagles in Minnesota and are already impacting cormorant colonies in Ontario. A cormorant hunt will remove a significant prey base for bald eagles.鈥

Fraser is available to discuss the following:

  • Alternative ways to manage cormorants,
  • The importance of cormorants in the Great Lakes ecosystems,
  • How cormorant ecology relates to biodiversity conservation,
  • How they came back from near extinction in the early 1970s.

TORONTO, May 12, 2020 鈥 How valuable is community science to research? A survey of participants at , a community and research collaboration to track and conserve bumble bees in North America, found users are well educated and strongly motivated to save bees, say 91亚色 researchers.

Bumble Bee Watch is a community science program where participants submit photos of bumble bees from across Canada and the United States for expert verification. The data can be used to help better understand bumble bee biology and aid in their conservation. But who is doing the submitting and is it enough? How can community science programs motivate their participants?

Eighty-eight per cent of participants said they were involved in the program because they wanted to contribute to scientific data collection, while 80 per cent said it was because they worried about bees and had a desire to help save them. Sixty-three per cent said they chose to participate to learn more about species on their property. Fifty-nine per cent said they participated because of a personal interest.

鈥淚t鈥檚 necessary for community science programs to understand participant demographics, what motivates them, and the outcomes of their participation,鈥 says PhD student Victoria MacPhail of the Faculty of Environmental Studies, whose supervisor is Assistant Professor Sheila Colla.

鈥淭hat can tell us what areas are working well or could be improved. It is also important to understand who verifies the submissions and who uses the data.鈥

The researchers found that participants want to learn more about bumble bees and contribute to the scientific understanding of them. 鈥淲e want volunteers to stay active and continue to contribute high quality data, as well as increase their interest in conservation actions,鈥 says MacPhail. 鈥淭hat way we can also create a program that meet their needs.鈥

Suggested areas for improvement included better app and website functionality, faster and more detailed feedback, localized resources, and more communication, but overall, participants think the program is valuable and they have learned about bumble bees.

A separate survey of 15 experts suggested how to improve the verification process and the quality of the submitted data. The experts suggested the research questions that are asked or answered from the data could help fill knowledge gaps around species diversity, ranges, habitat, phenology and floral associations. That would help support species status assessments, effect policy and legislation, and encourage habitat restoration and management efforts, as well as guiding further research.

The paper, , is published today in PeerJ.

TORONTO, Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019 鈥 Shiny paper, glitter, festive ribbons and bright bows may make your holiday gift pop, but what you may not know is most of that fancy wrapping will end up in the landfill site as waste, says recycling expert Calvin Lakhan, co-investigator of the project at 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Environmental Studies.

Lakhan is out to teach people how to navigate the world of recycling. With the holidays fast approaching, it鈥檚 a good time to consider more ecologically friendly ways to give gifts.

So how do you give an enticing gift while still being environmentally friendly? 鈥淟ook for wrapping paper that doesn鈥檛 have a coating and isn鈥檛 foil or metallic or sparkly,鈥 said Lakhan. Re-use bags and boxes, make your own wrapping, and skip the ribbons and bows for something biodegradable or edible. Dried flowers, homemade goodies, a sprig of a pine or spruce tree and strips of fabric from old clothes can all be used to spruce up a present.

What about all the packaging that comes with an increase in online shopping?

鈥淢uch of that packaging can鈥檛 be recycled,鈥 said Lakhan. 鈥淪tyrofoam packaging or peanuts are considered a contaminant within the recycling听stream and will quickly fall apart and cause a mess.鈥

Lakhan can talk about the following:

  • What kind of gift-wrapping paper is recyclable, what kind isn鈥檛, how do you tell the difference and why isn鈥檛 it recyclable?
  • The difficulty of ribbons, bows, tape and tinsel, unless you鈥檙e planning to re-use them
  • Why packaging, such as Styrofoam packaging or peanuts, should never be tossed in the recycling bin as they can create a recycling nightmare and are considered a contaminant
  • Why all that glitters is not necessarily a good thing as it鈥檚 often made of plastic.

91亚色 research shows species is critically endangered

TORONTO, April 18, 2019 鈥 The 鈥 a species once more commonly seen buzzing around Southern Ontario 鈥 is critically endangered, according to a new study led by 91亚色.

The finding, published in , found the native North American species, Bombus pensylvanicus, is facing imminent extinction from Canada, considered the highest and most at-risk classification before extinction. Many bumblebee species are rapidly declining across North America, but are important pollinators needed to grow Canada鈥檚 crops including apples, tomatoes, blueberries and legumes, as well as countless types of trees, shrubs, and wildflowers.

The researchers assessed the extinction risk of the American Bumblebee, ranking the risk much higher than a federal advisory committee鈥檚 most recent assessment which classifies the species鈥 extinction risk at special concern.

鈥淭his species is at risk of extinction and it's currently not protected in any way despite the drastic decline,鈥 said Assistant Professor , an expert in bees and endangered species in the Faculty of Environmental Studies.

鈥淣ow that we have assessed the extent of the decline and located where the remaining populations are, we can look more closely at threats and habitat requirements to design an effective conservation management plan so that this species does not disappear from Canada forever,鈥 said Colla, who co-authored and helped design the study.

The American Bumblebee, a species once more commonly seen around Southern Ontario, is critically endangered and under threat of extinction.

Colla has been studying bumblebees in Southern Ontario since the mid-2000s. This study relies on the annual data that she and her fellow researchers have collected.

The study鈥檚 research team 鈥 led by Victoria MacPhail, Colla鈥檚 doctoral student, and including a scientist from the University of Vermont 鈥 used data from three sources. They analyzed Southern Ontario data from the citizen science program, , a collaboration of volunteers who submit bumblebee photos through a website or phone app for experts to identify. The researchers used the Bumble Bees of North America database to obtain records of bumblebee species in Ontario and Quebec dating back to the late-1800s. They also used their own field survey work which allowed them to evaluate the status of the species within its Canadian range, using the globally-recognized International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List assessment criteria.

The researchers found that the American Bumblebee鈥檚 area of occurrence has decreased by about 70 percent and its relative abundance fell by 89 percent from 2007-2016 compared to 1907-2006.

鈥淭his bumblebee species now has a reduced overall range,鈥 explained MacPhail. 鈥淚t used to stretch from Windsor to Toronto, and all the way to Ottawa and into the Quebec area, but it is now only found in some core areas and has experienced a 37 percent decrease in overall range.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 now a rare sighting in Toronto,鈥 said MacPhail. 鈥淚n terms of relative abundance, compared to other bees, you鈥檇 have to catch 1,000 bumblebees to find four of this species, and that compares to finding 37 bees in the past. You could walk out the door and win the lottery and find it, or you could be searching for years and not find any.鈥

This study echoes Colla鈥檚 previous findings with the critically endangered Rusty-patched Bumblebee, once found in Southern Ontario. The species has not been seen in Canada for about ten years and drastically declined towards extinction without receiving protection or conservation management.

鈥淭he American bumblebee is still found in areas throughout its Canadian range and immediate action may save it from the same fate as the Rusty-patched Bumblebee,鈥 said Colla.

TORONTO, Tuesday, April 17, 2018 鈥 91亚色 will lead an international research collaboration to calculate how well countries are managing their natural resources and meeting their United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The University has been chosen by California- and Switzerland-based non-profit to produce its National Footprint Accounts. These accounts show each country鈥檚 ecological footprint or overall demand on nature and the biocapacity of nature to regenerate.

The collaboration will be announced at 12:30pm today in Ottawa (Room 430, Wellington Building,听180 Wellington St., Ottawa) at a reception for parliamentarians and senators hosted by MP Joyce Murray, MP Linda Duncan and Green Party Leader MP Elizabeth May. 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Environmental Studies Dean Ravi De Costa and Professor Emeritus Peter Victor will be on hand. Mathis Wackernagel, co-founder and CEO of Global Footprint Network, will give a presentation at 1pm on the Ecological Footprint framework and emerging collaboration.

鈥淲hether it is through teaching, research, engagement, or volunteerism, 91亚色 is committed to being a leader in sustainability and to addressing the challenges we face locally and globally, including those of ecological integrity,鈥 said 91亚色 President & Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. 鈥淭his collaboration is a major opportunity for our researchers and their international partners, as well as for our graduate students. It will build on the innovative research and teaching underway in our Faculty of Environmental Studies to inspire positive change and action, shape public policy, support evidence-based decision-making, and foster sustainability as an embedded value.鈥

The National Footprint Accounts are the foundation of Global Footprint Network's Ecological Footprint accounting framework and are updated annually with the latest United Nations data sets. The National Footprint Accounts track the Ecological Footprint and biocapacity of more than 200 countries and regions. This has been used by more than a dozen national governments to guide sustainability policy, including Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates, and many cities, such as Calgary and Vancouver. When coupled with the UN Human Development Index, the Footprint can help determine if countries are on track to meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

"By establishing the National Footprint Accounts at 91亚色 鈥 a vibrant, independent, well-governed, and respected academic leader in sustainability 鈥 the accounts will become even more trusted and effective," said Wackernagel. "After spreading the use and recognition of Ecological Footprint accounting around the globe, this new placement at 91亚色 will turn these accounts into an even more incontrovertible reference for public and private decision-making in support of sustainability."

The goal of the partnership is to make the National Footprint Accounts even more scientifically robust and widely used. An international hub at 91亚色 will not only update the accounts, but also coordinate, among international research institutions, methodological improvements to the Footprint Accounts.

In addition to hosting the Ecological Footprint database, 91亚色 will look into developing a new graduate program to support the production of the National Footprint Accounts.
