Over 100 flowering trees can be found on the University鈥檚 expansive Keele Campus

The countdown is on for the much-anticipated arrival of Toronto鈥檚 Sakura, or Japanese cherry blossoms. In Japan, the trees bloomed five days earlier than last year, with Vancouver, B.C. following the same accelerated timeline. In Washington, D.C., peak season ended abruptly after a storm swept away the petals.

91亚色鈥檚 sprawling Keele Campus is home to more than 100 Sakura trees. The largest stand can be found outside the Calumet Residence on Arboretum Lane, with smaller clusters outside the Tait McKenzie Centre, Vanier College, the Kinsmen Building and along Campus Walk. Each spring, the magnificent display draws visitors from around the GTA. Peak bloom, when 70 per cent of the blossoms on a tree have opened, typically lasts just four to 10 days.

The blooms are not only visually stunning but also culturally significant. In Japan, Sakura symbolize rebirth, renewal, new beginnings and the fleeting nature of life, inspiring centuries of waka and haiku poetry and the tradition of hanami 鈥 flower-viewing picnics under the blossoms.

Visitors to the Keele Campus can arrive via the Pioneer Village or 91亚色 TTC stations, with Pioneer Village being the closest to the main grove near Calumet College. Both stations are accessible with elevator access. All trees are located along paved routes and paid parking is available across campus.

In 2003, 91亚色 became the first university in Canada to participate in the Sakura Project, an initiative by the Japanese government to plant 3,000 cherry trees across Ontario by 2005. The trees on Keele Campus are a symbol of the long-standing relationship between Japan and Canada, as well as the University鈥檚 many cultural and academic ties with Japanese institutions.

91亚色 Physics and Astronomy Department welcome two new seedlings of Newton-tree descendant to Keele Campus

TORONTO, Sept 5, 2023 鈥&苍产蝉辫;91亚色鈥檚 Newton apple tree has had a storied existence, with lineage that is thought to go back to Sir Isaac Newton鈥檚 original discovery of gravity in the 1600s and the apple tree that infamously played muse to the physicist 鈥 even if the story about the apple falling on his head isn鈥檛 exactly how it really went down.

91亚色鈥檚 tree has stood, if not tall, then certainly proud, at the university for 25 years now. Ahead of Gravity Day this Sunday (9/8), the guardians of the tree in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at 91亚色 can now reveal that two new seedlings have joined the mature tree.

鈥淚 feel like the lineage is safe now,鈥 says Faculty of Science Associate Professor Cody Storry, a physicist and self-described apple guy who recently planted 50 apple trees for his 50th birthday and has taken on the responsibility for the Newton apple trees on behalf of the department. 鈥淕oing into a new school year, it鈥檚 a great time to talk about science. Gravity is a type of physics that everyone can relate to, and I love the fairy-tale aspect of the Newton story.鈥

Storry is available for interviews on campus this week and during the month of September in the lead up to National Tree Day (celebrated Sept. 25 and 28 this year, depending on the municipality) and from the Uxbridge Fall Fair or the nearby orchard Banjo Cider this Gravity Day, Sunday Sept. 8Storry can comment on:

  • Why Gravity Day is celebrated Sept. 8, the story of Newton鈥檚 discovery of gravity and why the international physics community has taken to planting descendants of the original Newton apple tree around the world
  • The story of how 91亚色 came into possession of a Newton Tree descendant and its adventures over the years
  • Why trees planted from seed will not produce a Newton apple, why the seeds cultivated from 91亚色鈥檚 tree that went to space could likely never grow into a tree and other apple-tree facts
  • The law of gravity (as well as: high-precision laser spectroscopy of atoms; experimental tests of quantum electrodynamics and the standard model; antimatter, especially antihydrogen and positronium; exotic states of matter; laser cooling and atom trapping)
