Certificate programs help newcomers overcome barriers to success in the Canadian marketplace

In honour of recent graduates, 91亚色 is hosting Celebrate Success March 2025: Internationally Educated Professionals (IEP) Bridging Program on Wednesday, March 5 at 7 p.m.

Over the last 15 years, more than 1,500 new immigrants from 65 nations have participated in 91亚色鈥檚 IEP bridging programs. The IEP program certificates in Canadian Business and Information Technology are funded by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. These certificate programs provide newcomer professionals with international credentials, an understanding of Canadian work culture and education in their respective fields.

鈥淥ur aim is to empower individuals to unlock their full potential and contribute meaningfully to their chosen fields in Canada,鈥 says Art Noordeh, IEP bridging program director and faculty lead, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS). Participants in the bridging programs complete credit courses in their professional field to gain a University certificate that helps them achieve local professional accreditation. These certificate programs support newcomers with career coaching and networking.

Wednesday鈥檚 celebration will open with a welcome message from Noordeh, followed by greetings from Vice-Provost Academic Marcia Annisette. Associate Dean Global and Community Engagement, LA&PS Maria Jo茫o Maciel Jorge will deliver a congratulatory message to the recent grads.

鈥淎s someone who immigrated from the Azores in Portugal, I resonate deeply with the journey of establishing a life in a new country and the importance of preparing oneself for success in new and unfamiliar settings,鈥 says Maciel Jorge. 鈥淭his bridging program serves as a vital resource, aiding skilled and educated newcomers in navigating the challenges they often face when pursuing employment in a new environment.鈥

Md Jubayed Rahman

Also speaking at the ceremony is Md Jubayed Rahman, an IEP graduate who immigrated to Canada from Bangladesh and is now employed as a senior financial analyst at REF Automation Ltd. 鈥淭hrough the program, I improved my communication skills, landed an interview, and met many interesting people,鈥 says Rahman. Coming to Canada, he understood that success in his field required more than just prior experience. The IEP program provided him with insights into Canadian-specific accounting standards. 鈥淚 have gained knowledge about Canadian tax and accounting standards, which has put me in a better position to pursue more opportunities in the job market,鈥 he says.

Maryam Tarhini

IEP graduate Maryam (Masha) Tarhini 鈥 who is Ukrainian-Lebanese and immigrated to Canada via Qatar 鈥 will share her experience about the bridging program at Wednesday鈥檚 ceremony as well. 鈥淚t connected me with incredible colleagues from diverse backgrounds, offering both learning opportunities and friendships, something I consider invaluable as a newcomer,鈥 she says of the certificate program. Attending 91亚色 job fairs and networking events further boosted her confidence: 鈥渉elping me see my worth through others鈥 reactions to my education and experience reassured me.鈥

Many of the grads being recognized overcame barriers by participating in the certificate program, which helps IEPs transition into employment that matches their education, skills and work experience. ()

Edosa Tamene

鈥淛oining the IEP program was a life-changing experience for me. It not only equipped me with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the Canadian job market but also gave me a sense of belonging in a new country,鈥 says Edosa Tamene, a graduate from Ethiopia receiving his certificate in Canadian Business at the ceremony. 鈥淭he supportive community and the friendships I made helped me overcome the challenges of starting fresh. Thanks to the program, I found my first job in Canada and felt truly at home.鈥 While completing the program, Tamene landed a job as a customer relations associate with Winters Instruments.

Sima Gul Qasemi

鈥淭he IEP program is a door to opportunities, helping you turn your dreams into reality in your dream country,鈥 says Sima Gul Qasemi, one of the day鈥檚 graduates who immigrated to Canada from Afghanistan and is now working as a customer experience associate at Scotiabank. 鈥淭hrough my courses, I gained valuable skills that I applied in my workplace. By demonstrating my abilities, I earned a promotion, strengthening my background in my field and allowing me to compete in the Canadian job market.鈥 Qasemi is being recognized for her career success while enrolled in the program.

Reflecting on her experience in the certificate program, Tarhini has advice for other newcomers: 鈥淓mbrace every opportunity, connect with others, and trust in your journey. Your experiences and skills matter more than you think.鈥

The graduates being recognized at Wednesday's ceremony come from 25 countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Mexico, Mongolia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Senegal, Taiwan, Turkey, Uganda, and Ukraine.

91亚色 staff, partners, friends and families of the recent graduates will be in attendance at Wednesday鈥檚 event. A networking session at the end of the ceremony will give an opportunity for alumni, students and guests to connect.

鈥淎n absolutely ecstatic feeling鈥 says Hortense Anglin, 85, older sister of Osra Lindo who made headlines in 2018 for graduating at 79

TORONTO, Oct. 18, 2022 Hortense Valerie Anglin, received thunderous and standing ovation from guests and fellow graduands as she gently walked across the stage to receive her first degree and be congratulated by the platform party at 91亚色鈥檚 in-person fall convocation.

鈥淭he diversity of our students is incredible, and that diversity also goes across age,鈥 says Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor of 91亚色. 鈥淎s far as I鈥檓 concerned, this is the perfect representation of the importance of life-long learning. You鈥檒l never know where life will take you, or what time in your life, and so it鈥檚 wonderful when I see people who are coming across that stage, 91亚色 graduands in all times of their lives. It鈥檚 beautiful.鈥

Hortense Anglin, right, with her younger sister Osra Lindo, who made headlines in 2018 for graduating at 79. Photo: Mario So Gao / 91亚色

For Markham resident Anglin, that time of her life came when she was inspired by her after learning about 91亚色鈥檚 pathway bridging program in a flyer she found at her local library.

鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 start right away, because my husband was ailing, and I had to devote my time fully to care for him,鈥 remembers Anglin. When her husband of 鈥52 years and 10 months鈥 passed away in 2014, Anglin focused on getting back on track with her education which she had discontinued after high school, more than half a century ago.

There was no turning back. And history repeated itself when she walked across the same 91亚色 convocation stage as her sister in October 2018 and her own granddaughter, Vanessa Joy Anglin, in June of that same year.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an absolutely ecstatic feeling!鈥 said the Jamaican-born Canadian, after her recent convocation ceremony. 鈥淚 have enjoyed every moment of this journey. It has been so meaningful and joyful.鈥

But the journey was not a breeze. Starting from completing a bridging program to transitioning from in-person to online education in March 2020, she had to adjust to new ways of learning quickly. Anglin appreciates the support of 91亚色鈥檚 technical support team as much as the help faculty members offered throughout her studies.

To be eligible for a bachelor鈥檚 degree program in 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, Anglin had to undergo the pathway bridging program. 鈥淔or 13 weeks I commuted to the 91亚色-TD Engagement Centre at 91亚色gate Mall in Jane and Finch neighbourhood to attend the bridging program,鈥 says Anglin.

鈥淭he bridging program was a simulation of university work. It is an excellent program that gives access to a university education,鈥 she says, advocating for the program that supports not only to seniors like her, but also to those who might have had challenges in pursuing higher education as well as newcomers to Canada 鈥 who can join the program as an entry-point before transitioning into a degree, diploma or certificate program at 91亚色.

鈥淭here were people in that class, who came from different countries 鈥 some from Iran and the Far East countries,鈥 says Anglin. 鈥淏ut they already had degrees in physiotherapy, medical laboratory work, and even nursing, and they wanted to go back to their old professions or switch to other professions. That was the beauty of the bridging program.鈥

Upon completing the bridging program, Anglin decided to pursue a degree in Religious Studies.

鈥淚 loved learning about a variety of subjects, and the last subject I completed for graduating was 鈥淢aking Sense of the Changing World鈥 and I just fell in love with anthropology. And guess what? I鈥檝e already signed up to do another course in anthropology this fall and who knows, my next convocation would be for a master鈥檚 degree in the next couple of years,鈥 says an enthusiastic and energetic Anglin.

While a 19-year-old Pakistani is one of the youngest on a student visa to receive an undergrad degree, a British expat student juggles full-time university and motherhood

TORONTO, June 14, 2022 鈥 Meet Syeda Fatima Abbas Rizvi, 19, and mature student Sabina Goranova 鈥 two women who started their post-secondary education in person before the COVID-19 pandemic emerged and had to complete their programs online, overcoming all challenges the pandemic posed.

But that is not the only thing the two of them have in common.

Rizvi, one of the youngest international (visa) students to receive an undergraduate degree from 91亚色, and Goranova, who is the mother of two young children, will both walk across the stage in graduation garb at 91亚色鈥檚 Spring 2022 Convocation  as two individuals who came to Canada for the sole purpose of pursuing post-secondary education.

While Goranova 鈥 a British expatriate living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 鈥 picked up her two kids and came to Canada with her husband to fulfill her ambition, UAE-born -and-raised Pakistani, Rizvi, packed her bags and flew to Canada to attend 91亚色 at age 16 with an aim to study global politics at the university level.

鈥淚 continue to be inspired by our students鈥 desire to drive positive change both locally and globally. Syeda and Sabina are inspirational examples of 91亚色鈥檚 steadfast commitment to shape global leaders for an equitable and sustainable future,鈥 says Rhonda Lenton, 91亚色鈥檚 president and vice-chancellor. 鈥淭hey represent 91亚色鈥檚 values and are applying their unique skills and experiences, overcoming unprecedented challenges, and addressing issues in their communities. I am excited to see what they do next. They are incredible ambassadors for the University.鈥

Read on to learn more about Rizvi and Goranova, who are also available for media interviews to share their experiences and tips for future students:

Syeda Fatima Abbas Rizvi 鈥 Global Politics BA Hons.

鈥淚 will be graduating Summa Cum Laude at age 19 from 91亚色! I intend to use my degree in Global Politics to continue further studies with the intention of pursuing a career in academia. Ultimately, I hope to excel in a research-based career with a focus on how to improve the condition of countries such as Pakistan.鈥

Syeda Fatima Abbas Rizvi at her older brother Ali Rizvi Syed's graduation on June 13.

Rizvi has come a long way in a very short time, literally. She had fast-tracked her way through high school to complete a rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) program in the UAE before joining 91亚色鈥檚 four-year honours program in global politics 鈥 which she completed in three years.

鈥淎s cheesy as it sounds, my parents were my inspiration from an early age! They encouraged me to try my best in everything I do, and this principle of striving to give my 100 per cent still resonates with me today. So, in my educational journey, that's exactly what I hoped to achieve.鈥

As an outstanding student throughout her life, Rizvi clearly had several options around the world for her post-secondary educational experience. She explains why she chose Canada and 91亚色: 鈥淲hen considering which universities to apply to, I was looking into the US and Canada, but I found Canada鈥檚 overall ambience to be preferable to that of the US, particularly as a visibly Muslim woman.鈥

鈥淚 selected 91亚色 because when doing my research, 91亚色鈥檚 diversity and social life really stood out to me and as an international student, that鈥檚 something I really valued. 91亚色鈥檚 politics program is also known for being left leaning, and I really liked that.鈥

Rizvi who had returned to the UAE and was visiting Pakistan, her country of origin, is back in Canada just in time for her graduation ceremony coming up on Thursday, June 16 at 3:30 p.m. One of the youngest to graduate with an honours degree at 91亚色 this spring, Rizvi is available for media interviews on her personal achievements and educational aspirations, at the Convocation Pavilion, Sobeys Stadium (formerly Aviva Centre) following the ceremony.

Sabina Goranova 鈥 Communication Studies, BA Hons.

鈥淚 am super excited about graduating in a subject that I am so interested in. The kids are looking forward to coming to see me graduate along with my mother and sister who are flying in for the occasion. Hats off to all my fellow mature student-parents鈥 you've got this!鈥

Sabina Goranova brought her kids Alex 3 and George 4, right, to Fall 2018 student orientation event.

Goranova followed her husband, Goran Goranov, to wherever his job took him 鈥 even if it meant quitting her civil service job in London, UK, and relocating to another continent. The couple moved to the Middle East in 2011 and had lived in the UAE since then.

While her husband was successfully employed, there was no career advancement in Goranova鈥檚 case. Goranov strongly believed it was due her lacking a post-secondary degree to support her experience. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 when he encouraged me to pursue something that would empower me,鈥 she notes. 鈥淚 found this as an opportunity to study something I was good at and passionate about. And it made sense to do this while the kids were young.鈥

Goranova explored further and found the ideal program at 91亚色, and as British expats, her family was happy to relocate for it in 2018, with the Canadian experience as a bonus.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been quite a ride,鈥 says Goranova who faced some practical issues as she started university in a new country, with two kids in tow. 鈥淚 had no help when we arrived. I had to bring my kids to orientation sessions with me and then I brought them to campus daycare. So, getting to lecture was extra fun, and stressful at times, when we had to rush in the car through the snowstorms!鈥

Despite her already cramped schedule and ongoing pandemic life, Goranova decided to take on work-study role to add Canadian work experience to her resume and was the website and social media assistant for 91亚色鈥檚 Atkinson Centre for Mature and Part-time Students.

The last year of education has been extra strenuous for Goranova, as her husband returned to working in-person and away from home and she became the only caregiver for their kids. She thanks her understanding and supportive professors with whose encouragement she landed safely after this roller-coaster ride as a work-study student and parent.

鈥淟ooking back at it, I am frankly surprised I managed to get the grades I got whilst having a day full of kids' schooling, feeding the kids, doing laundry, tidying the house, grocery shopping, going to hospital for emergencies like (kid鈥檚) broken arms and then essay writing once the house was quiet,鈥 says Goranova with a sigh of relief.

Goranova will be available at the Convocation Pavilion, Sobeys Stadium (formerly Aviva Centre) following the ceremony on Wednesday, June 15 at 10:30 a.m., to share her experience and tips for other mothers and mature students pursuing higher education.

鈥淲hile they have been lauded as resilient heroes, the romanticization of resilience cannot obscure systemic failures,鈥 points out 91亚色 Professor Ethel Tungohan in the Department of Politics in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. 鈥淏y visualizing the lived realities of Filipina care workers, we aim to make a meaningful impact on Canadian labour and immigration policies that affect them the most.鈥

The research used participatory action and photovoice to illustrate how Filipina care workers conducted their duties despite the pandemic-related challenges including a lack of personal protection equipment and sick days, intensified work requirements and precarious immigration status.

鈥淭丑谤辞耻驳丑听kwentuhan听(storytelling) sessions, these care workers highlight what it is like to navigate work, immigration processes, and family separation and reunification. Above all, their narratives of hope, faith, and strength shine through,鈥 says Tungohan, who led the project.

Canada鈥檚 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and 91亚色鈥檚 COVID-19 research fund and 91亚色 Centre for Asian Research funded the project. The research team included community organizers from Gabriela-Ontario and Migrants Resource Center Canada.

TORONTO, Oct. 26, 2020听鈥 Whoever they vote for, Americans who are trusting are more likely to cast their ballot on Nov. 3 鈭 or earlier 鈭 than Americans who do not trust easily, 91亚色 predicts.

He explains that people with low trust levels are less interested in politics, so they are less inclined to vote.

鈥淭his also means Southerners are less likely to vote in the upcoming elections,鈥 says Wu, who has analyzed voting patterns for every U.S. presidential election since 1948. 鈥Image of ballots and voting day messageThe internal migration between the north and the south does not change Americans鈥 trust in others, and it will have very little impact on their voting behaviour.鈥

Wu, a sociologist in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, is available to discuss:

  • Social trust as a predictor of American voting behaviour
  • Internal migration and its impact on trust and voting
  • Why southerners are less likely to vote
  • The impact of social trust on those who vote Republican compared to those who vote Democrat
  • Reasons for low Black voter turnout historically

Toronto, June 5, 2020 鈥 A 91亚色 program that brings a diversity of students from different disciplines together to work on real-life problems has received an international award from Airbus and the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC).

Through the Cross-Campus Capstone Classroom (C4) project, faculty members and students from the Lassonde School of Engineering, the Dance Department in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design, and other faculties, address challenges that benefit from a variety of perspectives and lenses.

The C4 project was the Airbus GEDC Diversity Award this week in Toulouse, chosen from 48 entries representing 18 countries. Launched by Airbus in 2012, the award is given to increase diversity among engineering professionals globally, so the industry reflects the diversity of its communities.

In the C4 project, 74 91亚色 students from eight faculties, including 23 engineering students, designed solutions for 11 social impact challenges identified by companies, non-profits, start-ups and government-linked organizations.

Students in third and fourth years from the various faculties came together in multidisciplinary teams to work on projects ranging from technology and design to environment and sustainability. Experiential education is a key component in this program, in which student teams worked with external partners to solve real-world challenges, thereby creating social impact.

In one project, for example, eight students from the Lassonde School of Engineering, Glendon College and the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, worked together on 鈥溾, a solar home system that aims to provide affordable heating and electrical power for homeowners, farmers and workers in El Norte Chico, Chile. The system replaces conventionally high-cost industrial components with low-cost, accessible materials.

91亚色 champions new ways of thinking that drive teaching and research excellence. Our students receive the education they need to create big ideas that make an impact on the world. Meaningful and sometimes unexpected careers result from cross-disciplinary programming, innovative course design and diverse experiential learning opportunities. 91亚色 students and graduates push limits, achieve goals and find solutions to the world鈥檚 most pressing social challenges, empowered by a strong community that opens minds. 91亚色 U is an internationally recognized research university 鈥 our 11 faculties and 25 research centres have partnerships with 200+ leading universities worldwide. Located in Toronto, 91亚色 is the third largest university in Canada, with a strong community of 53,000 students, 7,000 faculty and administrative staff, and more than 300,000 alumni.

91亚色 U's fully bilingual Glendon Campus is home to Southern Ontario's Centre of Excellence for French Language and Bilingual Postsecondary Education.
