TORONTO, Oct. 16, 2020 – 91��ɫ has received a $10 million gift from The R. P. Bratty Family Foundation toward the creation of the University’s Markham Centre Campus (MCC).

Set to open in Fall 2023, the Markham Centre Campus will be the first public university campus in 91��ɫ Region. The Bratty family’s substantial donation reflects a commitment to education that has been passed down through generations of their family, since coming to Canada in the 1920s.

“My parents’ biggest regret was that they never got to go to school,” says Rudy Bratty, Chairman and CEO of The Remington Group. “They regarded education as a privilege, so when I finished high school and decided to become a builder, like my father, he sent me to earn a bachelor’s degree. When I finished that, he made sure I continued on to get a professional degree.”

Rudy Bratty graduated from 91��ɫ’s Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Bar in 1957, beginning a long career as a lawyer and developer.

Over the years, the Bratty name has become synonymous with real estate development in Southern Ontario and throughout Canada. The Bratty Family are also notable philanthropists and have supported 91��ɫ for decades.

“91��ɫ is incredibly grateful to the Bratty family and the R.P. Bratty Family Foundation for their generous gift toward the future Markham Centre Campus, and their visionary leadership as supporters of higher education,” said President & Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton. “This contribution will not only support the MCC’s ability to provide a high-quality student learning experience in newly emerging and high demand programs but facilitate the research, innovation and creative activities contributing to 91��ɫ’s larger mission to build inclusive and resilient communities in one of the fastest-growing regions in Canada.”

MCC will offer employer-aligned degree programs, certificates and other credentials – with a rich array of experiential education activities – in high demand areas such as business and entrepreneurship, data analytics, new media and communications.

To honour the contributions of the Bratty Family, the University is naming the new atrium in the Markham Centre Campus “The Bratty Family Atrium.”

Rudy Bratty’s son Chris is President, Land Development and Investments, of The Remington Group and all members of the family are active in the business.

“For my dad, education was so important because it helps us to understand different perspectives,” says Chris Bratty. “It’s the best tool we have for conflict resolution. 91��ɫ Region is underserved in terms of universities. That’s why we’re so proud to partner with 91��ɫ to make this campus possible in Markham. This will be a significant building block for downtown core of Markham specifically and we hope it will attract businesses and cultural centres to the region.”

The family also hopes that by helping to support education in Markham, they will foster the innovation and creativity that comes from young people who are just beginning their journey to higher education.

TORONTO, Sept. 22, 2020 – Construction of 91��ɫ’s Markham Centre Campus formally began today with a groundbreaking event at the site for the $275.5 million project, expected to open in fall 2023.

President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton was joined by supporters of the project representing all levels of government: Hon. Ross Romano, Minister of Colleges and Universities; MPP Billy Pang (Markham-Unionville); 91��ɫ Region Chairman Wayne Emmerson; Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti; and representing the federal government, Hon. Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion and International Trade (MP Markham-Thornhill).

The Ontario government announced its approval for the project in late July and site preparation work began immediately for the new campus, which will offer up to 4,200 students in the first phase a range of professionally relevant degree programs and micro-credentials.

91��ɫ Region is projected to have the highest growth rate in Ontario in the 18-22-year-old population, increasing by 34 per cent by 2041, so Markham Centre Campus will offer students a university education close to home with work integrated learning opportunities in their communities.

“Through the new Markham Centre Campus, 91��ɫ will be helping meet the future needs of 91��ɫ Region by offering innovative new programs, work-integrated learning and community-engaged research,” said President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton. “By creating new opportunities for higher learning and entrepreneurship in the heart of one of Canada’s fastest-growing regions, the new campus will continue 91��ɫ’s longstanding role in building more prosperous, inclusive and resilient communities.”

The 10-storey, 400,000 square foot campus building, which will be located near the corner of Enterprise Boulevard and Rivis Road in Markham, was designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects. Construction manager on the project is Stuart Olson Ltd. The built form will be a five-storey podium with a five-storey tower above, clad in bronze-anodized aluminum, with welcoming and flexible indoor spaces and a Campus Green for outdoor gatherings.

Milestones during construction include the following:

• The enabling works − excavation, piles and shoring – begin immediately.
• Construction of the building’s foundation and superstructure starts in December of 2021.
• The building will be closed in during the spring of 2022.
• Completion and move-in is scheduled for August 2023.

91��ɫ introduced a comprehensive Social Procurement Policy in January to reflect its values of equity, inclusivity and social justice by ensuring that projects such as the Markham Centre Campus support local economic and social development. The university is inviting organizations to register as a Diverse Vendor or Social Enterprise to supply goods and services for the construction of the new campus.

First public university campus in 91��ɫ Region will open in 2023

TORONTO, July 24, 2020 – 91��ɫ is moving forward with a bold plan to build the Markham Campus (MC) that will help drive economic growth and social development in 91��ɫ Region and Ontario.

Construction of is expected to begin within a few days, with doors opening in the Fall of 2023. The MC will accommodate up to 4,200 students with the flexibility to respond to future growth demands.

Today, the Ontario government announced its approval for 91��ɫ to proceed with this important new project which will continue to enhance access and affordability in post-secondary education and help meet the future skills needs of the Province and The Regional Municipality of 91��ɫ.

“The Markham Campus will offer professionally relevant degree programs and micro-credentials with a strong focus on digital technologies, entrepreneurship and experiential education in high demand areas such as business and entrepreneurship, data analytics, new media and communications,” said 91��ɫ President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton. “Located in one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing communities in Canada, we look forward to strengthening our partnerships with government, and the private and public sectors, to provide students with work integrated learning opportunities while they study, and local job prospects when they graduate.”

The number of 18-22-year-olds in 91��ɫ Region is projected to grow by 34 per cent by 2041, the highest growth rate in Ontario. The MC will allow prospective students to study closer to home while supporting the talent needs of the Region’s burgeoning high-tech sector. Located in or near five provincially-significant employment zones, 91��ɫ Region is projected to create 15,000 jobs annually through 2030. The new campus will be a community of changemakers, fulfilling future labour market demands and civic leadership by giving future students the skills required for economic competitiveness and community development in Markham, 91��ɫ Region and across Ontario.

The site for the new campus, a 10-storey building near the corner of Enterprise Boulevard and Rivis Road in Markham, will also enable the 91��ɫ community to take advantage of existing and planned transportation infrastructure and community facilities such as the nearby Markham Pan Am Centre.

In recent years, 91��ɫ has increased its presence in 91��ɫ Region and the City of Markham. Innovation 91��ɫ, the University’s research and innovation arm, is a major partner in the IBM Innovation Space-Markham Convergence Centre, and 91��ɫ’s community innovation hub YSpace supports budding entrepreneurs in Markham. The University introduced academic programming in Markham for the first time last fall, with classes at the IBM Canada headquarters. Building a new dedicated campus building will help keep our talent local and be a magnet for jobs and investment.

The capital funding, anticipated at more than $200 million, includes significant financial commitments from 91��ɫ Region, the City of Markham, and donor contributions as well as the University’s existing capital funds.
