TORONTO, August 27, 2019– This fall will be the first full school year where parents, coaches and officials will be required to sign a concussion code of conduct and review concussion awareness resources as a result of additions to . The law passed last year, mandates the removal from sport and return to sport protocols for concussions and the new protocols, which came into effect on July 1, provide rules of behaviour to minimize concussions while playing sports.

Recently, the provincial government also included concussion awareness in its updated curriculum for schools which now includes lessons on concussion safety starting in Grade 1. According to statistics from the , there were approximately 46,000 diagnosed concussions in 2016-17 by hospital emergency departments for children and youth 5-19 years of age. Moreover, have little or noknowledge about concussion and only 4 in 10 are awareof available concussion tools or resources.

, a professor in the School of Kinesiology and Health Sciences, has led several studies on concussion in athletes and young children. Macpherson researches ways to help kids stay active and safe, whether playing on the hockey rink, walking to school, or riding in the backseat of a car. by Macpherson and her team influenced Hockey Canada’s previous decision to change the age at which body checking is introduced. Her expertise in injury prevention is helping to shape child safety policy in Canada.

TORONTO, July 8, 2019 – 91ɫ Professor spends time in his lab boring people. While some parents fear boredom during summer months, Eastwood immerses himself in it. He studies why some people are more prone to boredom and what happens in the brain when we’re feeling bored.

In his at 91ɫ’s Faculty of Health, Eastwood looks at what causes boredom and its impact on behaviour and health.

John Eastwoodis a clinical psychologist and associate professor of clinical psychology at 91ɫ. Eastwood’s research looks at how emotion and attention processes interact and how a person’s emotional state impacts attention processes – with a focus on boredom.

He is available to speak about:

  • Why are some people more prone to boredom?
  • Is there a difference between men and women?
  • What may be going on in your child’s mind when he or she is bored
  • What parents can do to reduce boredom

His research interests lie in water resources engineering, focusing onurban hydrology, including flood risk assessment and uncertainty analysis, sustainablewater resource management and infrastructure, and the impacts of climate change on these systems. His research contributions include designing newbig-databased techniques toimprove water quality and quantityanalysis in urban areas. In addition, Khan has worked with municipal governments, providing his expertise to a number of stormwater, watershed management and urban hydrology projects.

TORONTO, Jan. 22, 2019 – Canada’s unveiled today by the Federal Government waves goodbye to the four food groups Canadians have been following for years and now promotes the health benefits of plant-based eating with less emphasis on dairy and meat products. Additional changes include less emphasis on serving sizes, drinking more water, eating together with others and using food labels to make choices. Canada’s Food Guide was last updated in 2007 when experts touted eating from a . Today that rainbow was replaced by a “plate” of food that aims to meet the needs of all Canadians.

, associate professor in the School of Kinesiology & Health Science, Faculty of Health, is available for interviews and can provide insight on:

  • Why is a change necessary?
  • What do the changes mean for families?
  • How do the changes make a difference for food groups and overall weight and diet?

Kuk’s research focuses on how obesity, diet, and physical activity relate to health. Her current focus is a specific sub-population of people who are obese but who don’t experience the typical health problems we have come to expect with obesity, sometimes referred to as the “Fit-Fat Paradox.”

Andrea Josse, an assistant professor in the School of Kinesiology & Health Science, whose expertise focuses on clinical nutrition and exercise physiology in the context of both health and chronic disease, is available for interviews and can offer insight on:

  • How does thenew guide emphasize healthy eating from a more holistic approach?
  • What is theimpact of less emphasis on meat and dairy products for Canadians?
  • Does the new food guide allow for and promote greater variety or choice?

Professor Josse’s research looks at utilizing diet with different modes of exercise (i.e. aerobic, resistance, plyometric) to facilitate healthy changes in body composition, body weight and bone in different populations across the lifespan.

TORONTO, November 26, 2018 – After news this morning that .would cease production at its Oshawa plant as of December 2019, the plant’s more than 2,500 workers walked off the job. According to GM, the restructuring move is part of its broader changes across North America that will see other assembly plants in Detroit and Ohio also impacted.

The plant, which has been part of Ontario’s manufacturing industry since as early as 1953, is a key part of Canada’s auto industry. GM says the move is in response toits goal of producing more purely electric cars and developing technology for autonomous vehicles.

TORONTO, November 22, 2018 – is a time to examine the reasons why violence against women and girls (VAWG) continues to rise around the world.

The following 91ɫ experts are available for interviews on gender-based violence around the world and how it continues to be a barrier to the fulfilment of human rights for women and girls.

, associate professor in the Department of Social Science, teaches in the areas of social justice and human rights. Bunting is currently directing the , an international research collaboration on forced marriage in war. She is working with historians of slavery and women’s human rights activist scholars and partners in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda, Canada and England.

She can comment on:

  • Child marriage and forced marriage
  • Sexual and gender-based violence in conflict situations
  • International women's rights
  • International criminal law

, assistant professor in the School of Social Work and special advisor to the president on Indigenous initiatives at 91ɫ, volunteers on several organizations serving the Indigenous communities across Ontario. Before entering academia, she was a social worker supporting Indigenous women and children impacted by family violence.

She can comment on:

  • Family violence confronting urban Indigenous women
  • Historical and current acts of oppression experienced by Indigenous women
  • Services available for Indigenous women

, assistant professor at Osgoode Hall Law School and co-director of the , is an international legalexpert onwartime rape and sexual violence, including theprosecution of rapeas an international crime. Her current book project critically examines contemporary policy reform proposals to sexual assault law in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Professor Matthews has been published recently on the evolving perceptions of consent and #MeToo as a political strategy.

She can comment on:

  • Evolving conceptions of sexual consent
