驰辞谤办鈥檚&苍产蝉辫; k2i (kindergarten to industry) academy has received $463,800 from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism to develop and implement a unique micro-credentialed, Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) educational program, for Black youth in grades 7 to 12  as part of k2i鈥檚  stream.

Jane Goodyer, dean, Lassonde School of Engineering.

For this program,  will work with some of the largest and most diverse school boards in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to design and implement an intentional and tailored program to reach more than 1,500 Black youth and help address inequities for Black youth in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM). The program will engage with K-12 educators, STEM industries, community partners and post-secondary partners to develop a program that promotes cultural relevance, celebrates Black excellence, challenges anti-Black racism, and increases opportunities in STEM pathways.

Headshot of Camille Logan, associate director, Peel District School Board.
Camille Logan, associate director, Peel District School Board.

鈥淎t Lassonde, we understand the challenges of the future will be met by the people and knowledge we invest in,鈥 says Jane Goodyer, dean of the Lassonde School of Engineering. 鈥淓mpowering the creation of an equitable, diverse and inclusive community through programs like the SHSM in STEM for Black youth is essential in helping us attract students who have traditionally been underrepresented and underserved in STEM fields.鈥

The SHSM in STEM for Black Youth program was conceived to address the low representation of Black Canadians in the skilled STEM workforce.  According to Statistics Canada, Black Canadians received less than three per cent of the degrees and diplomas in post-secondary programs in 2016 that would qualify them for STEM careers. Equitable opportunities for Black youth to engage in STEM learning, explore the possibilities of STEM careers, and pursue postsecondary programs in STEM are critical to create positive change.

鈥淲e are always interested in working with organizations that put students and families first,鈥 says Camille Logan, Associate Director, Peel District School Board. 鈥淲hat excites us about working with k2i academy is the opportunity to collaborate and co-design a program that connects our Black students to STEM pathways and STEM professionals from Lassonde, CBSN (Canadian Black Scientists Network) and BPTN (Black Professionals in Tech Network).鈥

Headshot of Maydianne Andrade, president, Canadian Black Scientists Network.

To address systemic issues, this program will provide skill-building workshops promoting problem-solving, analysis, teamwork and leadership as well as technical skills, including coding, 3D modelling, engineering design and electronics. Students will receive constructive coaching and mentorship to support their educational journeys and career goalsThe program鈥檚 focus on academic success, career planning and skills development 鈥 while promoting wellness and resilience 鈥 aims to strengthen pathways for Black youth in high-demand, STEM-related sectors in the labour market.

"The Canadian Black Scientists Network (CBSN) centres the importance of mentorship and role-models for Black youth which we know has a significant positive impact in people鈥檚 lives,鈥 says Maydianne Andrade, President & Co-founder, CBSN. 鈥淐ollaborating with k2i academy in this program will enable a deeper and broader reach that would not be possible otherwise."

The k2i academy engages with youth by bringing STEM to life, connecting directly to school boards and their classrooms, offering innovative work-integrated learning programs and partnering with community organizations to provide unique, hands-on STEM learning opportunities. Today, they have grown to reach more than 6,000 students, teachers, families and community members, spending more than 175,000 hours in virtual and face-to-face engagements.

Lisa Cole, director, k2i.

鈥渒2i academy believes that our future leaders need us to collaborate differently, to come together to question our educational systems, engage with youth that connects with their interests and passions, and design programs that places our students at the centre of the design,鈥 says Lisa Cole, director of the k2i academy. Cole and the k2i academy were recently honoured by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities with a Minister鈥檚 Award of Excellence in the category of Equality of Opportunity for their work enabling youth in STEM. 鈥淭his program seeks to do this work with our collaborative partners.鈥

Through partnerships and collaborations with provincial and federal funders as well as individual and corporate donors, k2i academy offers programs at no cost to youth and their families, and works with community-based STEM organizations to reach youth who need them most. k2i academy is a key component of the Lassonde School of Engineering鈥檚 EDI Action Plan, committed to addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals in Quality Education and Reducing Inequities.

For this newest program, the k2i academy will work with BPTN and CBSN, 91亚色 research faculty and Ontario school boards, to create an experience aimed at inspiring Black youth. In collaboration with Ontario school boards, students in grades 7 to 10 will engage in skills development that will connect to grades 11 through 12 SHSM programs. Students in grades 11 to 12 will receive formalized recognition for learning through a micro-credentialed SHSM program leading towards an Ontario ICT/Engineering SHSM certification that can be used in professional environments to seek future STEM opportunities. Programs will be flexible 鈥 virtual and/or face-to-face, synchronous or asynchronous 鈥 depending on the needs of school board partners.

Quick facts about the program:

Three streams:

Learning Sessions:

  • Exploring STEM Career Pathways
  • Career Explorations in Digital Technologies
  • Preparing for a Career in STEM

TORONTO, February 24, 2021 鈥 Three theatre students from 91亚色鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design are among the emerging Black Canadian talent who have created work inspired by Obsidian Theatre鈥檚 , a collection of 21 filmed monodramas streaming on

For the project, , Black Canadian students were invited to take on the challenge of creating an original work answering the question 鈥淲hat is the future of Blackness?鈥 鈥 be it in spoken word poetry, an audio recording, a performed reading, or an Instagram essay.

21 Black Futures features a group of 63 Black Canadian playwrights, actors and directors creating art during the COVID-19 pandemic and a global reckoning with anti-Black racism. Seeding the Future participants are taking this artistic dialogue further through their responses, which are being published online on .

91亚色, Brock University, CBC Arts and Obsidian Theatre have collaboratively developed the project that features the creative responses from 21 Black theatre students from across the country, one for each piece in the original digital performance series. The respondents were chosen through a nationwide call for participants.

鈥淎s we work at Obsidian to develop and advance Black artists across the country, we also recognize the glaring lack of Black voices in arts criticism and journalism. When we were approached for this project, we wholeheartedly welcomed the opportunity to invite young Black voices to view and respond to 21 Black Futures,鈥 says Michael Sinclair, General Manager of Obsidian Theatre. 鈥淏lack and other BIPOC artists deserve to have voices at the table from their own communities engaging in dialogue about their work. We can鈥檛 wait to see what these 21 Black students have to say.鈥

The students were divided into three groups and were matched with a Black mentor to guide their creative approaches: Signy Lynch, Theatre & Performance Studies PhD student at 91亚色; writer and critic Jordy Kieto; and actor and writer Omari Newton.

The first part of Seeding the Future, including 91亚色 theatre student Cassandra Henry鈥檚 creative response to one of the first seven monodramas produced in 21 Black Futures, is .

The second and third group of responses, including contributions from 91亚色 theatre students Dante Jemmott and Megan Legesse, will be published on March 1 and on March 8, respectively.

TORONTO, February 23, 2021 鈥 In a gesture of support for its Juris Doctor (JD) students who are experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19, Osgoode Hall Law School of 91亚色 has announced that it will commit $1 to $1.5 million to assist those students over the next 18 months.

The Osgoode student relief plan will see up to $500,000 of the Law School鈥檚 surplus funds made available in the current (2020-2021) academic year to students in all three years of the JD program. An additional amount of up to $500,000 will also be available in the upcoming (2021-2022) academic year.

The decision to offer the financial assistance follows on the heels of a report by the Law School鈥檚 Working Group on Tuition Fees that detailed student concerns about the economic effects of the pandemic, particularly unexpected expenses associated with learning from home and loss of employment opportunities. 鈥淪tudents were placed under increasing pressure by the fact that the Law School was closed and that this would increase the costs of adjusting to the new status quo,鈥 said the report鈥檚 authors.

The seven-member working group 鈥 comprised of students, staff and faculty including a representative from the Dean鈥檚 office 鈥 concluded that some relief to students was both desirable and possible.

鈥淭he COVID-19 pandemic has financially impacted many of our students,鈥 said Osgoode Dean Mary Condon.听 鈥淲e know that they are having challenges as a result of all of the ways that learning is being transformed. We want them to know that we are doing our very best to support them through these difficulties.鈥

The first $500,000 will be distributed to students by the end of March, Condon said.

鈥淭he way it will work is that all students who received a fall bursary will automatically receive an additional top-up of either $500 or $1,000, depending on the level of their fall bursary assessment,鈥 Condon said. 鈥淚n addition, students who did not apply for a fall bursary, or who applied and did not receive a fall bursary and have experienced financial hardship directly related to COVID-19, will be invited to apply for assistance and, if eligible, will receive $500 each.鈥

Condon said this is not the first time that the Law School has provided financial relief to students who are feeling the economic effects of the pandemic and the overall financial burden of attending law school.

Last September, the Law School was able to ease some mental and economic strain by creating a $250,000 fund to assist returning JD students who had lost income or had unexpected expenses since March 15, 2020 that were directly attributable to COVID-19, she said.

TORONTO, Dec. 03, 2020听鈥斕齅ost countries are not fulfilling their international legal obligations during COVID-19 and other public health emergencies, reveals new research by a consortium of 13 leading global health law scholars, hosted by the Global Strategy Lab (GSL) at 91亚色.

In 2019, members of the analyzed key aspects of the International Health Regulations (IHR) to authoritatively interpret what countries are legally allowed to do to each other during future public health crises like Ebola and SARS.

image of world map globeThis work became even more relevant when the COVID-19 pandemic began spreading around the world early this year; the Global Health Law Consortium members reviewed how countries reacted to the outbreak based on the International Health Regulations that legally bind 196 countries in how they prevent, detect and respond to public health crises.

Subsequently, during a conference in South Africa, this group of legal experts developed consensus statements that authoritatively interpret of the IHR, which identifies the additional health measures countries can legally enact when responding to public health risks, and , which outlines countries鈥 legal duty to collaborate and assist one another in building national public health systems.

The consensus statements were published today in the prestigious .

, director of the Global Strategy Lab at 91亚色, is senior author on both consensus statements, and Roojin Habibi, research fellow at the GSL and doctoral candidate at Osgoode Hall Law School, is lead author on the consensus statement that interprets Article 43 of the IHR.

鈥淢any countries have taken overbroad measures, both in the past and now during the coronavirus outbreak, which indicate that the provisions within Article听43 of the International Health Regulations are not well understood and perhaps not fit for purpose,鈥 says lead author Habibi.

Under Article 43 of the IHR, countries are permitted to exercise their sovereignty in taking additional health measures to respond to public health emergencies, provided that these measures are proportionate to the risk at hand, aligned with human rights imperatives, and backed by scientific evidence.

鈥淐OVID-19 has clearly shown that proper international cooperation is required to prevent infectious diseases from spreading across borders,鈥 Habibi points out. 鈥淏ased on our analysis, we believe that the global community needs a common understanding of the law at hand. We recommend revision and clarification of legal obligations contained in these Articles to facilitate collaboration and enhance pandemic responses in the future.鈥

According to Article 44, there is a common and shared responsibility among countries to make it possible for every country to achieve the core public health capacities identified in the IHR, which is overseen by the World Health Organization.

鈥淢ost countries in the world are currently violating their international legal obligations under Articles 43 and 44 of the International Health Regulations,鈥 notes Hoffman. 鈥淭his means that the rules that were supposed to guide governments鈥 responses to pandemics like COVID-19 are either misunderstood, toothless, or insufficient 鈥 most likely a combination of all three. The Global Health Law Consortium鈥檚 analyses of the International Health Regulations that were published today will help bring clarity to countries鈥 legal obligations during global health emergencies, but ultimately these regulations need to be urgently updated to better reflect the realities of the globalized world in which we all live.鈥

TORONTO, November 18, 2020 鈥 Antimicrobial resistance is recognized by the World Health Organization as one of the top 10 global threats to public health. In the face of this threat, research is underway to determine what kind of international commitments and frameworks for cooperation are needed to address such a large, transnational challenge.

One year ago, the World Health Organization recognized the work of 91亚色鈥檚 Global Strategy Lab by designating it as the (WHOCC). The WHOCC has been tasked with providing technical guidance, policy analysis and international legal advice on global governance frameworks and regulations that will be both equitable and effective in addressing this worldwide problem.

91亚色 hosted a virtual panel of international experts on antimicrobial resistance today to mark and to celebrate the WHO鈥檚 designation of the Collaborating Centre at 91亚色.

鈥淥n behalf of听everyone at 91亚色, it听is my pleasure to congratulate听the听entire听Global Strategy Lab听team听on this exciting milestone,鈥 said 91亚色 President & Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L.听Lenton.听鈥91亚色 prides itself on听its ability to create impact and drive positive change by听facilitating partnerships between researchers and leaders听from industry, governments and not-for-profits around the world.听The Global Strategy Lab is an excellent example of听the success that is possible through this type of multisector collaboration.听By听designating the lab as a Collaborating Centre, the WHO has recognized the outstanding work听being done by the Centre听to call attention to the issue of antimicrobial resistance, and to find ways听to听address听this听issue on听an international听scale.鈥

The WHO Collaborating Centre (WHOCC) is focused on global governance of antimicrobial resistance, developing new ideas to rally political support and accountability related to global commitments, and providing policy analysis and legal advice on global governance arrangements to protect antimicrobials.

Governments, international agencies, civil society organizations, and businesses will have to work together to address three main challenges related to antimicrobials, says WHOCC Director , a professor of global health, law and political science at 91亚色 and the Dahdaleh Distinguished Chair in Global Governance & Legal Epidemiology.

鈥淭he first challenge is access. Several million people die each year from lack of access to essential antimicrobials. The second challenge is conservation 鈥 to make existing antimicrobial medicines last as long as possible so they work when we need them. The third challenge is innovation 鈥 investing in science to prevent infections from incurring in the first place and to invent new antimicrobials, because we all get an infection at some point.鈥

Estimates from an independent panel, commissioned by the U.K. government a few years ago, indicate that at least 700,000 people already die each year from antimicrobial resistance and that deaths from drug-resistant infections are likely to increase to 10 million per year by 2050 without bold action.

The WHOCC has brought together an interdisciplinary , including epidemiologists, ethicists, lawyers, political scientists, sociologists, and policy experts, based both at 91亚色 and around the world.

鈥淲e need to identify solutions for antimicrobial resistance that could not only work in theory, but actually can work in practice,鈥 says Hoffman. 鈥淪olutions must be epidemiologically effective, politically acceptable, equitable across populations, and work not only in a country like Canada but in very different settings around the world.鈥

驰辞谤办鈥檚 has a track record of supporting many national governments and international agencies, including the WHO, on research initiatives that are policy-focused, says Susan Rogers Van Katwyk, managing director of the WHOCC, who has a PhD in Epidemiology.

鈥淥ur team works on projects that are intensely interdisciplinary and policy-focused. We aim to do good in the world by using science and social science to inform the decisions that governments have to make. We have built a great track-record of doing rigorous applied research projects so we are excited to continue our work on global governance issues related to antimicrobial resistance with the WHO.鈥

TORONTO, Wednesday, November 18, 2020 鈥斕 An Osgoode Hall Law School clinic that provides free access to legal services for vulnerable investors has received a 肠测-辫谤猫蝉 award of $157,750 from a class action settlement approved by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

image of interior of Osgoode Hall Law School鈥淭he Osgoode Investor Protection Clinic fills a critical gap in the retail investment landscape. We鈥檙e grateful for this award that allows us to continue our important work in the face of growing demand, while also raising awareness of the potential benefits of directing a 肠测-辫谤猫蝉 award to our clinic,鈥 says Professor , the clinic鈥檚 academic director. Ontario鈥檚 Class Proceedings Act gives the court discretion to grant 肠测-辫谤猫蝉 (French for 鈥渁s near as possible鈥) awards when it鈥檚 not cost-efficient or feasible to distribute the awarded funds to members of the class action.

The first of its kind in Canada, the was launched at 91亚色鈥檚 Osgoode Hall Law School in 2016 to provide pro bono legal advice to people who believe their investments were mishandled and who cannot afford a lawyer. Funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario and the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada, the clinic pairs 12 second- and third-year Osgoode JD students for a year with supervising lawyers from leading business law firms in Ontario. Together, they support clients ranging from seniors who lost their entire retirement savings, to people swindled by trusted members of their community, to investors who had their portfolio mishandled by advisors.

Among many impacts, 鈥渢he 肠测-辫谤猫蝉 award will assist with the development of investor education, the recruitment of Osgoode students as summer interns and with the clinic鈥檚 research activities,鈥 says Puri. By acting as a 鈥渓iving lab鈥 to collect data, Puri and her team identify trends in investor protection, inform public policy debate and contribute to legal practice and reform.

The Osgoode Investor Protection Clinic was awarded the funds as the result of a decision by Justice Benjamin T. Glustein in a class action case involving global pharmaceutical company Endo International PLC. The representative plaintiff, an Endo investor, alleged that the company had misrepresented and/or omitted important information about its generic pharmaceutical business and certain other risks that, when revealed, caused a significant decline in the price of Endo鈥檚 securities.

The court approved the 肠测-辫谤猫蝉 donation at the request of the plaintiff and with the approval of the defendant 鈥渟o as to provide an indirect benefit to Class Members on top of the monetary recovery that most of them will be entitled to under the U.S. Settlement,鈥 wrote Justice Glustein in his decision.

This marks the second time in as many years that the Osgoode Investor Protection Clinic has been named in a class action settlement.

鈥淎 肠测-辫谤猫蝉 award aims to serve the interests of class members, which makes us an ideal match in securities class action cases where it鈥檚 impractical to directly compensate class members,鈥 points out Puri.

Osgoode alumni and legal representatives seeking further information on the Osgoode Investor Protection Clinic and court-directed awards are invited to contact Professor Poonam Puri at 416-736-5542 or ppuri@osgoode.yorku.ca.

TORONTO, Nov. 5, 2020 听Osgoode Hall Law School鈥檚 Investor Protection Clinic 鈥 the first clinic of its kind in Canada 鈥 has released four information to help educate and protect retail investors who may be vulnerable to financial mismanagement. Addressing topics such as the securities regulation system in Canada, red flags for investment fraud and ways to recover lost funds, the Points of Interest video series was produced by Osgoode students and funded through a grant from The Law Foundation of Ontario.

鈥淲e鈥檙e pleased to offer these important resources as part of our mission to provide pro bono legal advice to people who believe their investments were mishandled and cannot afford a lawyer,鈥 says Osgoode Professor Poonam Puri, the clinic鈥檚 academic director. 鈥淲e believe that better educated and informed investors are better protected.鈥

Almost 60 percent of the Investor Protection Clinic鈥檚 clients identify as having low or no investment knowledge. They place their trust in financial advisors to handle their investments wisely without understanding the information on the documents provided to them or the risks.

The Law Foundation of Ontario supported the project as part of its mission to help people understand the law and use it to improve their lives. 鈥淲e provide grants to support public legal education and information resources, like the Points of Interest video series, to help people understand and exercise their legal rights,鈥 says Lisa Cirillo, the Foundation鈥檚 CEO. 鈥淭his is especially important for people who may be more vulnerable, including those with low financial literacy.鈥

Osgoode students developed the videos in consultation with the clinic鈥檚 supervising lawyers and representatives from the Ontario Securities Commission and the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI). Topics include: ; ; and Seeking a Remedy; and . The final two videos in the series 鈥 Navigating the IIROC (Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada) Arbitration Process and Is Civil Litigation Right for You and Your Claim? 鈥 will be released later this academic year.

鈥淭he experience of distilling complex information into 10-minute video clips highlighted how challenging the securities regulatory market can be for retail investors to navigate,鈥 says former student caseworker Jessie Armour, who co-led the project in 2019-20 with her classmate, Marco Castelli, JD鈥20.

Castelli agrees: 鈥淲e hope these videos will help retail investors identify signs of investment mismanagement sooner so they can prevent losses and have a better sense of their options.鈥
