NEWMARKET, ON 鈥� Sept. 14, 2022 鈥� Today, 91亚色 President Rhonda Lenton and Newmarket Mayor John Taylor signed a new five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) 鈥� a clear commitment to advance shared goals and create positive change in Newmarket.

The signing ceremony was held in the Town of Newmarket Council Chambers and marks the beginning of an exciting, collaborative approach that will strengthen the relationship between Newmarket and 91亚色.

鈥淲e are pleased to partner with the Town of Newmarket to develop sustainable, equitable and prosperous opportunities that will enhance and enrich our communities and drive positive change,鈥� said Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor. 鈥淏y collaborating together on innovative programming, diverse experiential learning opportunities, and cutting-edge research, we are enriching the student living experience, building the next generation of future leaders and strengthening our impact on the global problems affecting our local communities.鈥�

鈥淣ewmarket's success is tied to the strength of our partnerships. Newmarket has a history of working with 91亚色 on a variety of social and economic initiatives,鈥� said Newmarket Mayor John Taylor. 鈥淭he agreement signed today formalizes our partnership and creates a framework to accelerate and expand the ways we work together and bring more benefits to the community. I'm excited to expand our partnership and its potential to make Newmarket even better.鈥�

The MOU is a five-year agreement that highlights three main areas of focus:

• Exploring new opportunities for Newmarket to host 91亚色 programs, and/or to develop programming
• Experiential learning opportunities at the Town of Newmarket for 91亚色 students in areas of importance like Public Policy Administration and Law, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Law, Glendon Interpretation Program, Engineering and Technology and more.
• Collaboration on research, capstone projects, professional development and/or community education opportunities between the Town of Newmarket and 91亚色 faculty including but not limited to:
  • Executive Education opportunities for Town StaffAdvancing the Town鈥檚 Smart City goals
  • Supporting the Town鈥檚 needs related to transportation and traffic
  • Supporting the Town鈥檚 goals related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Advancing the Town鈥檚 environmental and sustainability goals

On Monday, June 20, Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas was joined by 91亚色 President Rhonda Lenton at a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing at Aurora Town Hall.

The event was a celebration of a long history of partnership between 91亚色 and Aurora as well as a cementing of common goals and a shared vision for a forward-looking collaboration that will bring tangible benefits to the Aurora community.

The MOU is a five-year agreement setting out a wide range of agreed-upon initiatives and priorities. The agreement specifies key areas in which the town and University have shared goals, including: community development, research, scholarship, learning and employment, economic growth, and sustainability.

鈥淭he Town of Aurora has a long-standing relationship with 91亚色 having worked together on important efforts in various fields with the shared intent of improving and enhancing our community. Today鈥檚 signing of the memorandum of understanding formalizes this relationship as we agree to work together to support each other鈥檚 strategic priorities and bring more educational and learning opportunities to our community,鈥� said Mayor Tom Mrakas. 鈥淲e are excited for the future possibilities of this partnership especially as we continue to develop our downtown core and build a strong community.鈥�

Specifically, the MOU contains shared pledges to pursue smart community technology; professional development opportunities for town council and staff; and learning and employment programs, including experiential education and work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities in key areas such as urban planning and municipal law. 

鈥淲e are pleased to partner with the Town of Aurora to contribute to the sustainable and economic prosperity of our communities,鈥� said Lenton. 鈥淭he MOU pledges to pursue new professional development and learning opportunities and to participate in the development of leading-edge technologies that drive positive change while advancing key University priorities such as our commitment to sustainable development.鈥�  

The MOU designates liaisons at the University and Town of Aurora who will oversee joint efforts that fall within the agreement鈥檚 scope, organize periodic reviews, and track progress.
