TORONTO, March 4, 2026 – 91ɫ and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN), Mazina'iga-ziibing Misi-zaagiwininiwag, signed a Memorandum of Understanding today to work collaboratively in the spirit of reciprocity.

As part of that reciprocity, 91ɫ will advance its ongoing work to address Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and work with MCFN to co-create spaces and learning outcomes. In addition, in support of the University’s goal to increase access to education, eligible MCFN community members enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at 91ɫ will receive a tuition waiver.

91ɫ President and Vice-Chancellor Lisa Philipps (L) and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation Chief Margaret Sault sign the MOU

Within the spirit of the agreement, 91ɫ will also continue to highlight the MCFN as caretakers of the land the University sits on.

The University is one of the first post-secondary institutions in Ontario to adopt an Indigenous led and developed land acknowledgement, reflecting how the MCFN community wishes to be represented, for its Keele and Glendon Campuses, along with a different land acknowledgement for its Markham Campus.

The MOU and land acknowledgement mark an evolution in how universities are working with First Nations.

"This MOU reflects a shared commitment to relationship-building grounded in respect, responsibility, and reciprocity. The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation welcome this opportunity to strengthen pathways for Indigenous learners and to ensure our histories, voices and perspectives are meaningfully reflected within academic spaces,” says MCFN Chief Margaret Sault. “Through this partnership, we look forward to creating opportunities that support Indigenous students in achieving their goals while fostering greater understanding for all who learn here.”

The University and MCFN will collaborate on opportunities to support the revitalization of the Michi Saagiig language and culture through research and learning. 91ɫ will also explore opportunities to support community and individual economic and social development. A MCFN councillor will also sit on 91ɫ’s School of Medicine Indigenous Health Advisory Committee, and together, the University and MCFN will create a Faculty of Health course.

Front: Lisa Philipps, 91ɫ Interim President and Vice-Chancellor and Margaret Sault, Chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation

“This Memorandum of Understanding marks an important evolution in how 91ɫ understands its responsibilities as a post‑secondary institution situated on Indigenous lands. Grounded in reciprocity and respect, this partnership with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation reflects our shared commitment to advancing truth and reconciliation in meaningful, enduring ways,” says 91ɫ President and Vice-Chancellor Lisa Philipps. “By working together to co‑create learning spaces, support Indigenous learners, and honour the Mississaugas of the Credit as caretakers of the land, we are strengthening pathways to education while deepening understanding across our community. We are grateful for the trust placed in us and look forward to the work ahead, guided by relationship, accountability and shared purpose.”

In addition, through the Indigenous-led initiative , moccasins will be engraved on pathways throughout 91ɫ’s Keele Campus. The initiative, which has over 20 installations within the Treaty territory, advances the principles of reconciliation and fosters public awareness of First Nations’ treaties, history, culture and traditions through education, collaboration and art.

Last year, Nokiiwin Tribal Council gifted 91ɫ’s Glendon College with a Two Row Wampum Belt, a gift of enduring legal and ceremonial significance symbolizing the deepening relationship between the two. The Two Row Wampum, or Kaswenta, is a formal diplomatic document and living treaty first recorded over 400 years ago.

TORONTO, Jan. 10, 2024 – Building on a decades-long partnership to address social issues and community needs, earlier today 91ɫ and United Way Greater Toronto (UWGT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance shared goals to benefit the communities they serve across Peel, Toronto and 91ɫ Region.

President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton and President and CEO of UWGT Daniele Zanotti formalized the agreement during a signing ceremony at 91ɫ's Keele Campus, which included a panel discussion about social procurement, one of the shared commitments the MOU aims to advance

Those goals include increasing equity and inclusion, community development, research and knowledge mobilization, learning and employment opportunities, inclusive economic growth, and sustainability. A first between the two organizations, the MOU will enable 91ɫ and UWGT to collaborate on research in areas that align with UWGT's community priorities and the university's areas of strength, including affordable housing, inclusive employment and income security, inclusive communities, and a strong social services sector.

As one of the shared areas of interest, social procurement seeks to increase community benefit by being intentional about how an organization buys its goods and services. 91ɫ was one of Canada's first universities to establish a comprehensive Social Procurement Policy, recognizing that its purchasing of goods and services could foster inclusive economic growth and positively impact surrounding communities. By keeping community economic development as a core principle, social procurement helps create more sustainable and prosperous communities. The premise is simple: as 91ɫ grows, local communities should share in the success.

91ɫ Professor Luisa Sotomayor, director of the City Institute, moderates a panel discussion at the MOU signing

"91ɫ and United Way Greater Toronto are longstanding partners who share a commitment to creating more prosperous and equitable communities to ensure that no one gets left behind and that we are fully leveraging the resources we have, including people, to build a better tomorrow," says Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor of 91ɫ. "I am confident that by working together and pooling our joint expertise in research, advocacy, and public policy work, we can create a just, equitable and sustainable future for all."

91ɫ's vision is to offer a broad demographic of students access to a high-quality university, that is research-intensive and committed to driving positive change. At the centre of the University Academic Plan is a challenge to elevate 91ɫ's contributions to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For its contributions to advancing the SDGs the University ranked 33rd in the world in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. 91ɫ's Social Procurement Policy is one way it is advancing its contributions to SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, which promotes sustainably managing natural resources, reducing and managing waste better, and promoting sustainable lifestyles and company practices.

From left, Sotomayor moderates a panel discussion following the MOU signing with Lenton, Zanotti, Founder and President of Do Good Donuts Melanie Cote, and Founder and Executive Director of Building UP Marc Soberano

In 2022, 91ɫ launched its Social Procurement Vendor Portal, becoming the first University in Ontario — and one of the first in Canada — to open its procurement process to non-third-party certified diverse vendors and social enterprises. By actively identifying and contracting with diverse-owned businesses and social enterprises, and others who disproportionately experience unemployment or underemployment and discrimination, 91ɫ has prioritized vendor diversity through both its Social Procurement Policy and its Social Procurement Vendor Portal.

"Today's MOU signing with 91ɫ is significant because we are recognizing the foundational role of social procurement and how we as large organizations can leverage purchasing power for economic opportunity,” says Daniele Zanotti, president & CEO of United Way Greater Toronto. "This partnership is about uplifting the neighbourhoods we call home, delivering more opportunities for the communities we serve, and creating shared opportunities to improve social conditions."

About United Way: As the largest non-government funder of community services in the GTA, reinforces a crucial community safety net to support people living in poverty. United Way’s network of agencies and initiatives in neighbourhoods across Peel, Toronto and 91ɫ Region works to ensure that everyone has access to the programs and services they need to thrive. Mobilizing community support, United Way’s work is rooted in ground-breaking research, strategic leadership, local advocacy and cross-sectoral partnerships committed to building a more equitable region and lasting solutions to the GTA’s greatest challenges.

TORONTO, Dec. 11, 2023 – By signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today, 91ɫ and Southlake Regional Health Centre agree to leverage their collective strengths in health care and research to address pressing challenges in its communities and beyond.

This MOU will enable them to explore mutual areas of interest and goals, opening conversations and furthering health knowledge, practice, policy and care.

“Collaboration between universities and health-care organizations is more critical than ever to feed the talent pipeline including the on-going needs for lifelong learning, facilitate groundbreaking research and innovation, and provide the best possible health care for our population,” says Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor of 91ɫ. “I am delighted to continue 91ɫ’s partnership with Southlake. This MOU signing will leverage 91ɫ’s longstanding reputation as a leader in health-care education, while advancing our shared goals of increasing the quality and accessibility of care in 91ɫ Region and Simcoe County. This collaboration spans the full spectrum of care – from infant, child and adolescent health to healthy aging and seniors’ care. It will usher in better care for generations by leveraging expertise in cancer research, neuroscience, and disease modelling, including diabetes, addiction, cardiovascular disease and more.

“Southlake is proud to foster an environment of innovation, growth and learning, while providing leading edge care to our communities,” says Arden Krystal, president and CEO, Southlake Regional Health Centre. “This partnership with 91ɫ will allow us to enrich care for the patients we serve, support professional development and enhance collaboration with the mutual goal of improving care delivery.”

As part of the agreement, 91ɫ and Southlake will be able to partner on improving health informatics and analytics, as well as health technology to develop digital health solutions, machine learning, and diagnostic imaging collaborations.

The MOU will also allow Southlake and 91ɫ to explore professional and community development initiatives that could provide positive change for both institutions, along with the students, staff, faculty and communities they serve. This would include providing Southlake employees with learning opportunities at the University and jointly hosting community events to help raise awareness of local health concerns.

Krystal and Lenton formalized the alliance during a signing ceremony at Southlake in Newmarket, which included Newmarket-Aurora MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy and Southlake’s Elizabeth Ferguson, chief nursing executive and vice-president for people, interprofessional practice and patient experience.
