The donation enhances and expands student services and supports for 91亚色鈥檚 top-ranked JD/MBA jointly delivered by Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business

In recognition of a transformational $6 million gift from The Hennick Family Foundation, 91亚色 has named the unique program of supports and services in their honour. The Hennick JD/MBA provides enhanced scholarship and world-class learning experiences, further elevating the joint program鈥檚 reputation and student outcomes.

Jay and Barbara Hennick are prominent Canadian business leaders and philanthropists whose impact spans the fields of health care, education, and the arts. Together, they are the founders of The Hennick Family Foundation, established in 2008 to support charitable initiatives that reflect their family鈥檚 values and passions. The Foundation plays a vital role in advancing access and excellence in areas such as medical research, higher education, and cultural enrichment across Canada and around the world.

In recognition and support of the Hennicks鈥� generous donation, the University has also committed to matching a part of the funds with a further combined $2 million commitment from Osgoode, Schulich, and the University, bringing the total investment in the program to $8 million.

The Hennick JD/MBA program combines the three-year Osgoode Hall Law School Juris Doctor (JD) law degree with the two-year Schulich School of Business Master of Business Administration (MBA) to create a four-year combined program. Graduates will receive a Hennick JD/MBA certificate in recognition of their dual degrees.

The joint program features a unique combination of courses to prepare students for the demands of leading-edge careers in business, law, public policy and a variety of fields in which the two disciplines intersect. More than 550 Osgoode/Schulich JD/MBA alumni hold positions of influence around the world 鈥� a testament to the exceptional training they have received.

91亚色鈥檚 Hennick Centre for Business and Law honours accomplished leader

TORONTO, February 9, 2017 鈥� The Jay and Barbara Hennick Centre for Business and Law at 91亚色 has presented the 2016 Hennick Medal for Career Achievement to Carol Hansell (LLB/MBA 鈥�86), founder and Senior Partner of Hansell LLP and Hansell McLaughlin Advisory, and one of Canada鈥檚 foremost experts in corporate governance.

The Hennick Medal, which is awarded annually to a distinguished leader who has earned international recognition in the business and legal communities, was given to Hansell at a reception in her honour in Toronto on February 8.

鈥淐arol Hansell is a role model for our students,鈥� said Edward J. Waitzer, Jarislowsky Dimma Mooney Chair in Corporate Governance at 91亚色鈥檚 Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business, and Director of the Hennick Centre. 鈥淪he is a pioneer in governance education and thought leadership, grounded in practical experience. In a career spanning more than 25 years, she has done so much 鈥� from leading transactions to advising boards, management teams, institutional shareholders and regulators in connection with legal and governance challenges to shaping public policy. She has also given back to the community, as a board member, mentor and force of nature.鈥�

Hansell, who was appointed last year as Chair of Ontario鈥檚 Business Law Advisory Council, is the author of a four-volume looseleaf, Directors and Officers in Canada: Law and Practice, that deals with the legal framework of corporate governance in Canada, and What Directors Need to Know: Corporate Governance.

She was inducted as a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) in 2013 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Investor Relations from IR Magazine Awards - Canada in 2015. She is a Founding Trustee and Fellow of the American College of Governance Counsel.

In addition to her LLB/MBA degree from 91亚色, she also holds degrees from Western University (BA in History 鈥�81) and the University of Toronto (MA in International Relations 鈥�82).
Previous recipients of the Hennick Medal have been Kathleen Taylor, former President and CEO of Four Seasons Hotel and Resorts and now Chair of the RBC Board of Directors, in 2010; Tye Burt, former President and CEO of Kinross Gold Corporation, in 2011; Moya Greene, CEO of Royal Mail Group, in 2012; Gregory Sorbara, former MPP, Vaughan and now Chancellor of 91亚色, in 2013; Marianne Harris, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC), in 2014; and Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. and Chairman of Ferrari S.p.A., in 2015.

Launched in 2009, the Jay and Barbara Hennick Centre for Business and Law 鈥� a joint initiative of Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business at 91亚色 鈥� is the first Canadian centre to promote and develop joint business and law scholarship and education.
