MARKHAM, ON, Feb. 1, 2023 鈥 Today, President and Vice-Chancellor of 91亚色, Rhonda Lenton, together with dignitaries, University leadership, local community members and philanthropists, marked an important phase in the building of its new Markham Campus with a 鈥榯opping-off ceremony鈥 and the announcement of a $5-million donation toward capital construction costs from Metropia, presented by Howard Sokolowski, a 91亚色 alumnus and the company鈥檚 founder and CEO.

91亚色 President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton (centre) is joined by dignitaries and philanthropists including (l-r): Thornhill MPP Laura Smith, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities Jill Dunlop, Metropia Founder and CEO Howard Sokolowski, Markham-Unionville MPP Billy Pang, and Markham-Thornhill MPP Logan Kanapathi.

The milestone was recognized with a ceremonial signing of the final beam attended by local dignitaries, University leadership and community members. The final structural I-beam was then lifted and placed by a crane 鈥 completing the building鈥檚 frame.

The final structural I-beam is lifted into place, completing the building鈥檚 frame.

Coupled with curtainwall installation up to the fifth level and the completion of the concrete structure, this final beam placement means that interior work to support the campus鈥檚 academic programs and research grounded in core themes of technology and entrepreneurship can progress.

The $5-million donation from Metropia and Howard Sokolowski, a 91亚色 alumnus, will go toward the capital construction costs of the campus. In honour of this generous gift, the student success centre on the first and second floors of the new building will be named the Metropia Student Success Centre.

The Metropia Student Success Centre will be a dynamic and central hub for all student supports and services at Markham Campus. The suite will include the student success and academic advising office, an interfaith centre, multipurpose wellness studio and spaces for academic success, mentoring, counselling and student life. It will also feature areas for student organizations, including student government and clubs, to collaborate and plan events on campus and within the community.

The high-tech, research-intensive campus will embed 91亚色 in the heart of one of the most diverse and dynamic urban communities in the province and country, while supporting research and academic programs that reflect the local economy 鈥 offering opportunities for students, faculty and staff to collaborate directly with employers, startups and community partners with a shared commitment to right the future.

Howard Sokolowski, a 91亚色 alumnus and founder and CEO of Metropia announces a $5-million donation toward the capital construction costs of Markham Campus.

Together with YSpace, the Markham Small Business Centre, the City鈥檚 Economic Development initiatives, and technology companies already based in Markham, this new campus will help foster innovation and entrepreneurship in Markham and the Regional Municipality of 91亚色. It will also attract more skilled, diverse talent to study, work and settle in Markham, further growing the city as a forward-thinking community and a leading technology and innovation hub.

TORONTO, May 25, 2022 鈥  at 91亚色 has received $1 million from the Ontario鈥檚 Ministry of Education in support of a summer work-study program for high school students from racialized backgrounds.

Thanks to the grant, k2i鈥檚 summer STEM program, , which launched in summer 2021 with $500,000 in ministry funding, will return for a second summer session this June.

The program is free to participants and is designed to further k2i鈥檚 commitment to addressing systemic racism, discrimination, and inequality in education by providing more equitable opportunities in STEM fields. Grade 11 and 12 students from three GTA school boards and one northern school board, will engage in real-world engineering projects alongside Lassonde undergraduate mentors, staff, and faculty.

With the aim of creating such opportunities and fostering a welcoming community, this summer鈥檚 Work-Integrated Learning Program will focus on physics 鈥 a discipline that has disproportionately low enrolment among racialized students.

Programs like Bringing STEM to Life are integral to the University鈥檚 commitment to diversifying the STEM fields, says Lassonde Dean Jane Goodyer.

鈥淟assonde has made a priority of establishing partnerships with outside stakeholders, including those in primary and secondary education, to create positive change and increase diversity in STEM,鈥 Goodyer said. 鈥淎s these fields form the foundation of Canada鈥檚 knowledge base, we have an obligation to ensure underrepresented voices 鈥 particularly those of Black and Indigenous youth 鈥 contribute to a greater diversity of thought and experience within STEM. A broader and more diverse body of knowledge is necessary to building a more just and sustainable future.鈥

The 2022 program will be delivered in two modules

Work-Integrated Learning 鈥 Physics (W-IL Physics): This program is open to students who finished Grade 10 science (academic or applied) in the 2021-2022 school year, who will have the opportunity to work in a paid role towards Grade 11 university physics or Grade 12 college physics credits.

Work-Integrated Learning 鈥 Indigenous Engineering, Technology, and Innovation in Design (W-IL Indigenous Engineering): This program is open to students entering Grade 11 or 12, who will have the opportunity to work in a paid role towards a Grade 11 or 12 Interdisciplinary course credit in Indigenous Engineering, Technology, and Innovation by Design. This program is customized and co-designed with an Indigenous math and Ojibwe educator from the Algoma District School Board. Officially launching this summer, it will be offered again during the 2022-2023 school year.

The Lassonde undergraduate students who serve as mentors will have the opportunity to develop skills in leadership, equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), program design and implementation, teaching, and project management.

鈥淲e are committed to working with K-12 education sector partners to create programs that make an impact,鈥 says Lisa Cole, Director of Programming, k2i academy. 鈥淧rograms like this are designed to help remove systemic barriers in unique ways. Our hope is that youth currently underrepresented in STEM will be inspired and supported, and will go on to pursue further STEM pathways.鈥

Quick facts:
Bringing STEM to Life: Work-Integrated Learning will include:

  • 140 high school students
  • Four school boards (Toronto District School Board, Peel District School Board, 91亚色 Region District School Board, Algoma District School Board)
  • Six physics teachers from the partnering school boards
  • 50 undergraduate STEM and STEM-related mentors and mentor leads
  • 10 Lassonde Research Faculty advisors and mentors

More about the k2I academy:

The k2i academy engages with youth by bringing STEM to life, connecting directly to school boards and their classrooms, offering innovative work-integrated learning programs, and partnering with community organizations to provide unique, hands-on STEM learning opportunities. Through partnerships and collaborations with provincial and federal funders as well as individual and corporate donors, k2i academy offers programs at no cost to youth and their families and work with community-based STEM organizations to reach the youth who need us most. The k2i academy is a key component of the Lassonde School of Engineering  committed to addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals in Quality Education and Reducing Inequities.

TORONTO, February 25, 2016 鈥 91亚色 President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri applauds the Ontario government for its commitment to improving access to post-secondary education in this year鈥檚 Ontario budget.

In presenting his 2016 provincial budget, Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa announced the government will create a new upfront grant, the Ontario Student Grant, starting in 2017-18. This new grant will provide greater support for our low and middle-income students and will provide greater clarity for all of our students as to the amount of support they are eligible to receive prior to starting the school year.

Further, the government reiterated its commitment to providing students with access to high-quality programs closer to home. Part of their commitment includes the building of a new 91亚色 campus in Markham Centre as part of their Major Capacity Expansion Policy Framework.

91亚色 Region is one of the fastest-growing major urban areas in Canada and is at the heart of Ontario鈥檚 knowledge economy. The new 91亚色 Markham Centre campus will help to address increasing demand. Nearly 60 per cent of young people in 91亚色 Region go on to attend university and with this new campus, they will be able to fulfill their academic aspirations closer to home.

鈥淭oday鈥檚 budget is a strong signal that the Ontario government recognizes the importance of investing in post-secondary education, enhancing accessibility, and supporting students,鈥 said Shoukri. 鈥淲e are pleased that the Ontario government has recognized the real merits of building a 91亚色 campus in 91亚色 Region, and we look forward to starting work on building our new campus in Markham Centre in the near future.鈥

Expected to open in 2020-21, the campus will offer a diverse range of professionally relevant programs designed to meet the needs of the region.

鈥淭he new 91亚色 campus to be located in Markham Centre will help to create a vibrant cultural and academic hub within Markham for 91亚色 Region,鈥 said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. 鈥淲e鈥檙e grateful to Premier Wynne and the Ontario government for their support and commitment to this important initiative. This campus is a positive step towards bringing much needed post-secondary education to the residents of 91亚色 Region.鈥

Quick Facts

  • 67 per cent of 91亚色 students receive financial assistance through OSAP.
  • More than $25 million was provided to 91亚色 students in scholarships and bursaries in fiscal 2014-15.
  • On May 19, 2015, Ontario announced they had selected the 91亚色 Markham Centre campus proposal.
