A dedicated educator, a tireless social activist and a passionate politician; few members of the 91亚色 community have had as extraordinary and lasting impact on society as the Honourable Jean Augustine, Canada鈥檚 first Black woman to be elected to the House of Commons and the first to be appointed to federal cabinet.

Last week, community members joined Augustine at 91亚色鈥檚 Keele Campus to celebrate an announcement of funding from the federal government to support the endowed university Chair in her name.

The Hon. Kamal Khera, Canada鈥檚 Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, and Persons with Disabilities delivered the news, 鈥淗aving access to equal opportunities and a brighter future should not depend on the color of your skin or your origins. Our government is committed to dismantling systemic barriers wherever they persist in our country,鈥� she said. 鈥淧artnering with organizations like the Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community, and Diaspora, we are creating pathways to education for Black youth and future Black scholars, thereby building a stronger, more prosperous Canada.鈥�

The $1.5 million federal contribution represents a major milestone for the endowed Chair 鈥� now fully funded with more than $3 million, thanks in large part to many years of dedicated grassroots fundraising efforts led by Augustine, supported by her devoted network, and backed by matching funds provided by the University.

President Rhonda Lenton delivered heartfelt remarks on behalf of 91亚色, reflecting on the importance of the work the Chair will support, including scholarly research, programs, partnerships and new opportunities for Black communities in Toronto and beyond.

鈥淲e are grateful for the generous support of the Government of Canada which will build on Jean Augustine鈥檚 legacy and vision and enable the Chair to continue in perpetuity 鈥� fostering the success of current and future Black scholars and students, and addressing systemic barriers to advance access, equity and inclusivity in education,鈥� Lenton said.

Augustine paid tribute to those who have supported her vision over the years, 鈥淪ince 2008, we have been diligently raising funds to secure this vital community resource. The generous donation we received has allowed us to reach our goal, and our community is deeply grateful for this invaluable contribution,鈥� she said.

The announcement follows a history of determined fundraising since the Chair was established. Efforts led by Jean Augustine herself, and community-inspired efforts like the in 2021 ensured success in raising $1.08 million towards the endowment, which was then matched with a further $1.08 million by the University.

Prof. Carl James, who currently holds the Chair, and Faculty of Education Dean Robert Savage also spoke to those gathered, including Member of Parliament Arielle Kayabaga, and former Dean of the Faculty of Education Paul Axelrod, among many esteemed community members, partners and advocates.

James is the current Chair and a recently appointed distinguished research professor in the Faculty of Education. His work builds on Augustine鈥檚 vision. A renowned researcher and prolific writer, James is widely recognized for his research contributions and for leading efforts to enhance educational and social outcomes for Black youth across Canada. His groundbreaking research on streaming 鈥� the exercise of choosing between 鈥榓pplied鈥� or 鈥榓cademic鈥� courses, found to disproportionately affect Black students 鈥� ultimately led to the provincial government ending the practice in Ontario high schools.

The real-life impact of this work was evident at a free documentary film screening later in the day at the Price Family Cinema on 91亚色鈥檚 Keele Campus, where students from James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School and Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic School cheered in a standing ovation after receiving news that the Chair had been fully funded.

The documentary Steadfast 鈥� The Messenger and the Message, follows Augustine鈥檚 journey 鈥渇rom Happy Hill to Parliament Hill,鈥� and traces her beginnings as a teacher in Grenada and deep connection to her Caribbean roots. The film highlighted how her early experience informed her work and social activism in Canada 鈥� from establishing Black History Month in Canada in 1995, to the community-engaged work the Jean Augustine Chair advances today.

Initiatives like the Day at 91亚色 program (providing Black students enrolled in grades 7-12 an opportunity to explore their post-secondary education options) or the Black Internship Program (Co-op) Credit (designed to increase Black leadership and education engagement through skills development and experiential learning) are only two examples of how Augustine鈥檚 legacy has shaped the University and neighbouring communities in positive ways.

In a post-screening conversation with bestselling author and fellow , Augustine reflected on both her age and her impressive list of accolades and accomplishments: 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 put 86 years into 57 minutes, but we tried.鈥� More than 60 years since arriving in Canada, Augustine鈥檚 impressive legacy continues to grow 鈥� outpaced only by her passion for public service, community, and the power of education.

Earlier this week, 91亚色鈥檚 president and vice-chancellor, Rhonda Lenton, joined Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre鈥檚 (RVH) CEO, Gail Hunt, and Research Director Dr. Jesse McLean, to celebrate a shared commitment to advance medical education and health research through a .

Health care is at the forefront of numerous complex societal challenges the next generation of changemakers must be prepared to address and is one of 91亚色鈥檚 fastest-growing areas of study, research, and community engagement. 鈥淏y leveraging our combined expertise and pooling our strengths in research and education,鈥� says Lenton, 鈥淚 am certain that we can improve health outcomes and make important contributions toward high-quality, sustainable, inclusive, and accessible health care for the communities we serve.鈥�

Longstanding clinical-academic affiliates, 91亚色 and RVH already have a deep history of working together to exchange resources and knowledge. In 2023 alone, RVH has provided clinical placements for 70 91亚色 students, while 32 91亚色 nursing students (from the 91亚色/Georgian College partnership) are finding employment and education in RVH鈥檚 Clinical Extern program.

鈥淎t RVH, we ask questions to promote new learnings, ideas, research and discovery,鈥� says Hunt. 鈥淲e challenge and push past what has always been done so we can offer better care for our patients, their families, our community, and region. Signed at a ceremony at the Barrie, Ontario hospital, the MOU builds on this rich partnership to support the continuation of clinical placements and real-world experiential education opportunities for 91亚色 students, as well as increase collaborative research development in areas including mental health, informatics; epidemiology, disease etiology, aging, maternal and child health, health-care policy, nursing, and rehabilitative sciences, along with new health technologies, such as digital health and artificial intelligence.

The agreement also includes academic recognition for RVH staff and continuing education for RVH health-care professionals so they can continue to adapt and innovate as new technologies and advances emerge.

As home to one of Canada鈥檚 largest nursing and nurse practitioner programs; as well as world-class programs in psychology, kinesiology and health sciences, global health, health studies, health policy and management, health informatics, critical disability studies, and neuroscience; and, with plans for a proposed School of Medicine aiming to tackle the growing need for health-care professionals, 91亚色 has developed a longstanding reputation as a leader in health programming and research.

Desjardins partnership in support of critical 91亚色 accelerator programs highlighted during university tour event

When Guy Cormier, President & CEO of Desjardins Group, spoke with students, aspiring entrepreneurs and members of the 91亚色 community about his personal and professional journey, he professed a life-long love for hockey, and admitted he could connect any topic in management and leadership to an analogy of the sport.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e losing the game, there鈥檚 30 seconds left on the scoreboard, you have to do something,鈥� said Cormier, responding to a student question about the value of resilience in cultivating leadership capacity.

He also reminded students about the importance of calling a time-out, noting that even elite superstars need a moment to rest, reset and get on the same page.

Cormier shared these and other insights that helped him on his journey from cashier to the youngest president in his organization鈥檚 history, during a public event at the Schulich Executive Learning Centre on 91亚色鈥檚 Keele Campus, on his tour of Quebec and Ontario universities.

Cormier discussed the history of Desjardins, his journey from lecture halls to boardrooms, and how his personal approach to leadership has empowered him to make decisions in the best interest of society, and the planet, in the long run.

Lenton also spoke about Desjardins and 91亚色鈥檚 ongoing partnership in support of innovation and entrepreneurship.

鈥淚n today鈥檚 rapidly changing economy, there is a greater need for public, private, and non-profit sectors to work together on building a brighter future for everyone,鈥� Lenton said.

Earlier this year, Desjardins and 91亚色 announced a combined sponsorship for Innovation 91亚色, in support of expanding two critical accelerator programs; the Glendon Entrepreneurial et Innovation 脿 l鈥檌nternational (GENIAL) and Entrepreneurial & Learning Alliance (ELLA).

is a bilingual initiative offering training, extracurricular activities and a research program in entrepreneurship and innovation to faculties, Ontario francophones and students at 91亚色鈥檚 Glendon Campus. Launched in 2017 by associate professor of management and entrepreneurship Angelo Dossou-Yovo, GENIAL has been working to foster economic growth, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

鈥淕ENIAL provides Glendon students with invaluable training in entrepreneurship and innovation.鈥� says Marco Fiola, Principal of Glendon College, 鈥淭his partnership will allow GENIAL to scale up its bilingual Entrepreneurial Skills Passport (ESP) program and exemplifies some of the exciting experiential education projects that are being developed at Glendon. Students with global aspirations will acquire professional skills in French, in keeping with Glendon鈥檚 mission to train culturally agile entrepreneurs and community leaders.鈥�

Over the next two years, Desjardins鈥� gift will also support the sustainability of ELLA, a program at 91亚色鈥檚 entrepreneurship hub 鈥� YSpace 鈥� and Ontario鈥檚 first accelerator focused on supporting women-led product and service-based businesses from ideation to growth, providing women entrepreneurs with access to the community, knowledge and resources they need to scale their business.

TORONTO, August 1, 2019 - , an initiative designed by 91亚色 students to connect and support Indigenous youth, will be receiving funding 聽of more than $350,000 by the Government of Canada under the program.

The investment will equip 120 First Nations, Inuit, M茅tis and non-Indigenous youth with the skills and training required to reduce聽 employment and education gaps in technology, all while engaging a process of reconciliation through collaborative learning and civic engagement.

The project will be led and implemented by the Indigenous community of 91亚色 in partnership with YWCA Canada and Digital Justice Lab. Local partnerships have been developed in Ontario with Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation, Elephant Thoughts, Mikinaak, and in Saskatchewan with the YWCA Regina, North Central Hacker Dojo, West Flat Citizens Group.

Judy Sgro, Member of Parliament for Humber River 鈥� Black Creek announced the Government of Canada鈥檚 contribution to this project today, in Toronto.聽 鈥淚鈥檓 pleased to express my support of the wonderful energy exhibited by the students of 91亚色 in the launch of this new project. The Indigenous Friends Association is showcasing an entirely new approach for a new century, new digital workplace, and new generations to come. 鈥�91亚色 is committed to placing Indigenous Knowledge, Cultures and Peoples at the core of our teaching, research and creative activities,鈥� said President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. 鈥淭his project is a wonderful example of student initiative, collaboration and teamwork that supports the process of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth through co-creating innovative technological projects.鈥�

Through various partnerships, individuals under 30 will be provided with skills training in three phases with the goal of supporting the process of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth through co-creating innovative technological projects.

Phase I: Community outreach and participants鈥� recruitment.

Phase II: A boot camp and 4 practical technical courses.

Phase III: Co-creation and implementation of community action projects.

Announced by 91亚色 in 2018, the Indigenous Friends Platform started as a mobile social networking tool, created by students as a collaborative space to access traditional counselling, social networks, events calendars, and community resources. From the onset, the app was developed with the guidance of the Indigenous community at 91亚色 鈥� Elders, students, faculty, and Aboriginal Student Association staff.

鈥淭his funding will help us develop the technical skills required for youth to participate in community service opportunities and culturally diverse initiatives,鈥� said Alejandro Mayoral-Banos, a PhD candidate who leads the project and serves as the Executive Director of The Indigenous Friends Association, a non-profit set up by the . 鈥淚t is truly an initiative developed by Indigenous peoples, for an Indigenous and non-Indigenous audience. I look forward to its continued growth.鈥�

The Indigenous Friends Association is currently developing and expanding the mobile app in other postsecondary institutions in Ontario. This new funding opportunity will help increase the initiative鈥檚 impact in other provinces through the implementation of novel approaches in educational program development for digital tech education.

TORONTO, March 19, 2019 鈥� 91亚色 President & Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton applauds the Government of Canada's 2019 Budget for its significant investment in work-integrated learning, an international education strategy, graduate research scholarships and life-long learning. These investments will ensure Canada remains competitive and a leader in the global economy.

With two-thirds of all emerging jobs requiring higher education, it is important that Canada continues to encourage greater participation in university education and invests in the development of globally skilled talent. The 2019 Federal Budget outlines investment in several important areas.

鈥淭oday鈥檚 budget sends a strong message that the Canadian government recognizes the importance of investing in work-integrated learning. These opportunities are crucial to helping students bridge their academic studies with practical experience increasing their competitiveness as graduates in the global labour market. We are pleased that the government has set a target of creating 84,000 new student work placements across all disciplines by 2024,鈥� said .

91亚色 is also pleased that the 2019 contains an investment to implement the international education strategy including an outbound student mobility pilot program and the promotion of Canadian post-secondary education abroad to build our talent network. Supporting international student mobility helps to strengthen and diversify our trade links abroad and increases our opportunities for international collaboration in impactful research areas.

91亚色 commends the government for following through on the recommendations from the Fundamental Science Review, by investing in an enhanced provision of scholarships for graduate students at both the master鈥檚 and doctoral levels in the 2019 Budget. With this increased funding, universities are better positioned to attract the necessary talent to help Canada fully realize its world-leading research potential.

The budget also makes a commitment to invest in life-long learning and upskilling with the creation of the new Canada Training Benefit. This will ensure that more Canadians have access to a university education that will help prepare them for future labour market needs.
