"The YSpace Network will ensure we build on that momentum right across our campuses, while leveraging the expertise and communities of powerful Faculty-based startup programs such as Schulich Startups, IP Osgoode and the Lassonde School's BEST program."

The Network has been jointly created by YSpace and the Schulich School of Business, co-led by 91亚色's Director of Entrepreneurship & Innovation David Kwok and Schulich's Executive Director of Innovation & Entrepreneurship Chris Carder, with strategic oversight and institutional support from the Office of the Vice President Research & Innovation. For three 91亚色 undergraduate students and avid sport and entertainment fans, landing internships with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) is a highlight of their school and early career journey, and one they鈥檙e not likely to forget. Having an opportunity to connect with athletes and executives from major corporations elevated their internship experience.

91亚色 is the official university partner of the Toronto Raptors which provides students exclusive networking opportunities to explore career paths in this field.

Schulich School of Business students Hanna Mengistu and Afreen Jeelani are wrapping up their summer internships, while Schulich鈥檚 Nicholas Rebelo is completing a one-year internship with MLSE.

Getting a big picture look at how their studies fit into real-life careers is one of the biggest advantages, say the students.

From left, 91亚色 Schulich School of Business students Afreen Jeelani, Hanna Mengistu and Nicholas Rebelo

Jeelani is still deciding what she wants to do as a career in business, but as a huge Raptors fan, she was excited to work with MSLE. 鈥淚 thought it would be the perfect opportunity,鈥 she says. Last summer, she tried a finance internship with TD. 鈥淒oing these internships, I'm hoping that I can learn what I love and see what I want to do in the future.鈥 So far, working with the Raptors and working in human resources are both at the top for this second-year business administration student. 鈥淚鈥檓 grateful I鈥檓 getting to learn from these internships. I'm definitely enjoying it a lot.鈥

Afreen Jeelani

As a human resources operations intern, one of Jeelani鈥檚 main jobs at MLSE is to help with the transition from one scheduling and recruiting platform to another that incorporates artificial intelligence. This involves rounds of testing and interactions with external vendors and senior professionals at MLSE. She also helps develop courses for staff doing behind-the-scenes work ahead of concerts at Scotiabank Arena, such as how to build stages and which safety issues to consider.

A highlight for Jeelani has been the opportunity to help with events featuring players. For Rebelo, his time with MLSE has spanned one year with positions as a partnership marketing intern focusing on Raptors partnerships such as IBM and Google, a game day coordinator role and a franchise and basketball operations internship with the Raptors 905.

鈥淭he game day coordinator position was really dynamic,鈥 says Rebelo, 鈥淚 had the opportunity to work game days with the Raptors, which was completely different from my initial term in partnership marketing.鈥 It involved pre- and post-game set-up on the court or in the arena, as well as hosting duties where he met the CEOs of technology company IBM and electronics company LG.

A couple of highlights for his experience included running a clinic with Canadian professional basketball player Kia Nurse and having the opportunity to compete outside of his internship in the esports gaming tournament. Rebelo competed against other university players in the NBA 2K League, something that came about because of his internship and interest in esports.

Nicholas Rebelo

As a franchise and basketball operations intern, Rebelo works under the Toronto Raptors 905 leadership team. 鈥淥ne of the really interesting things that I'm working on right now is the construction of our new practice facility and locker rooms, which ranges from discussions on partner integration all the way to putting on a hard hat for a site visit,鈥 he says. He鈥檚 part of the team finding and negotiating with potential venues in different cities for future Raptors 905 games, investigating different ticketing software and partnerships with local schools, and generating ideas for consumer incentives.

All three interns expressed gratitude for the trust and responsibility they were given, which exponentially increased their learning experiences.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really important for your manager to trust you to actually do real work. MLSE does a really good job with their interns of letting them experience a lot of different things,鈥 says Mengistu, who is going into her fourth year at 91亚色 in the BBA program specializing in finance and marketing. Her work as an intern encompasses two MLSE departments 鈥 financial planning and analysis, and treasury 鈥 where she contributed to fiscal year-end, as well as tracking and analyzing variances between forecasted amounts in budgets and actual amounts spent for some 50 different departments.

Hanna Mengistu

For the treasury department, she supports the organization of the company鈥檚 CAD/USD daily cash flow, a system she is helping to remake to ensure the tracking process is more efficient.

鈥淚f you asked what my dream internship is, this would be it. I really want to work in sports and finance. Finance, auditing and treasury might not be the flashiest positions but it's really, cool to work with numbers on things that you like, such as teams you like,鈥 says Mengistu, a life-long sports fan and player (basketball, soccer and ringette) who moved from Ottawa to attend 91亚色. She first learned about MSLE internships during a Schulich recruiting fair.

鈥淚 think the coolest moment I had was helping out as a volunteer at , a tournament run by MLSE.鈥 Four top men's teams 鈥 Canada, Ukraine, C么te D鈥橧voire, and New Zealand 鈥 played. 鈥淚 got to go on the field with the photographers and take pictures, and I got to watch the penalty kicks from the field.鈥 Another highlight, says Mengistu, is getting to shadow a live marketing team for a concert of either Katy Perry or Tate McRae.

Their advice to other students? Network, have coffee chats, let people know what you鈥檙e interested in, build connections and be persistent.

For Jeelani, Rebelo and Mengistu their internship experiences have expanded their horizons in unexpected and wonderful ways.

With public and private partnerships in both countries, Office of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the Schulich School of Business runs Together Mission, making startup dreams come true for several students and recent grads since 2021

91亚色鈥檚 Schulich School of Business successfully concluded the fifth edition of its Together Mission, recently. More than 150 students from India and Canada participated in the unique mentoring and venture pitching competition.

A deep tech company that鈥檚 focused on transforming crop waste into sustainable carbon, a patented reusable LED bulb with replaceable cartridge, and a painless testing technology to detect oral cancer, were among the top six startups competing in the , following a weeklong rigorous bootcamp.

After much deliberation, the judges announced ProtonCraft, a patent-pending electrolyzer as this year鈥檚 winner of the highly successful initiative that shapes the next generation of entrepreneurs emerging from Indian universities and Schulich鈥檚 graduate programs.

Dubbed as Together 5.0 this year, the global initiative by Schulich School in partnership with Government of India鈥檚 and the Consulate General of India in Toronto, and the City of Toronto, brought together multinational organizations, leading entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and investors from Canada and India to mentor participating student teams.

鈥淐anada and India are natural partners. We share a commitment to pluralism and to excellence in education and innovation,鈥 said 91亚色鈥檚 President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton, at the launch event, noting that she visited India last year, to explore research, entrepreneurship and education collaboration across the country. 鈥淚t's fundamental to strengthening the well-being of the communities that we serve. This shared sense of purpose binds our present and our future.鈥

Schulich Adjunct[MOU1]  Professor Chris Carder, the person behind this innovative initiative also spoke about his visit to India earlier, during which time he presented the idea of a startup bridge between 91亚色 and the Indian innovation economy to Schulich鈥檚 India Advisory Board members, including  Mr. Ratan Tata. , Carder recalled that the late Indian businessman and philanthropist expressed keen interest in seeing the initiative takeoff.

Lokesh Goswami, a past winner of the venture competition shared his experience as an engineer-turned entrepreneur. The co-founder and chief technical officer of Angirus, an innovative company that takes pride in its product, wricks, developed as an eco-friendly and sustainable technology to make waterproof bricks using 100 percent recycled waste material. He highlighted how his team made of only students who were trying their hands on entrepreneurship by participating in the pitching competition and 鈥済ot a trailer of a whole startup鈥 journey by the end of Together 2021. He also offered several tips to current participants ahead of the competition, asking them to have an open mindset and be willing to share their venture ideas with mentors for best results.

鈥淲ith this year鈥檚 theme-based solutions, we aimed to improve people鈥檚 lives while addressing areas of national and global importance,鈥 pointed out Carder, who is also the executive director of the Office of Innovation & Entrepreneurship and co-director of Entrepreneurial studies at Schulich. 鈥淚ncreasing access to the global startup ecosystem through coaching and mentorship sessions by industry leaders, plus offering these young entrepreneurs with feedback from judges during the competition were key parts of this year鈥檚 program.鈥

While the startups are founded by Indian students, Schulich MBA students are trained by Schulich Instructor Cherry Rose Tan and Carder himself, to guide Indian students on how to design commercialization strategies and express their concepts to investors.

Students from sectors including e-mobility, environment and energy, health care, income security and fintech, food and agriculture, telecommunications, textiles and education were among this year鈥檚 participants. Aside from learning to be efficient entrepreneurs, participants from both countries also had the opportunity to make new lifetime connections and perhaps collaborate in the future.

Schulich School students attend worldclass Chinese universities, preparing to become future entrepreneurial leaders

Tiffany Kwan is getting ready to graduate this year with an international Bachelor of Business Administration () from the Schulich School of Business at 91亚色. When she walks across the convocation stage in the fall, she would have already gained valuable global experience, alongside fulfilling her academic requirements.

鈥淚 am grateful to 91亚色 for all the global opportunities that it offers to students. At Schulich specifically, there are also opportunities to earn credits while working internationally, and this encouraged me to look for professional opportunities beyond Canada,鈥 says Kwan, who has worked in the United States and is now studying in China. 鈥淭hanks to the school鈥檚 connections with its international university partners.鈥

Tiffany Kwan, an exchange student in Fudan University in Shanghai, strongly recommends interested students to connect with peers while at 91亚色 about international experiential learning opportunities.

Schulich Dean Detlev Zwick says strategic partnerships with educational institutions around the world is a key priority for the school. 鈥淲e are laser focused on enhancing the career readiness and job opportunities for our students in this global business environment. To help students like Tiffany and others, we are creating opportunities through partnerships with top tier institutions worldwide. While Schulich offers various scholarships and bursaries for international exchange programs, we also facilitate full scholarships by host institutions to help reduce the financial burden on our students.鈥

91亚色 also offers a number of other and that are internationally focused.

Kwan explored study abroad opportunities, passionate to understand how international relations can propel entrepreneurship and to do business globally. 鈥淪ince the world is becoming more globalized, it鈥檚 really important to learn to work with people of different backgrounds and exchange is a great way to learn how to do that.鈥

She is an exchange student in Fudan University in Shanghai, one of the international financial hubs. 鈥淭he university offers a lot of interesting courses from an Asian economy perspective, so I have learned a lot about how business is done in China and how China has become the epicentre for international trade and supply chain,鈥 says an excited Kwan.

Although Kwan鈥檚 ethnic background is Chinese, she grew up in Trinidad and Tobago and Canada, with limited Mandarin language skills. 鈥淣ow that I am in China, I have the opportunity to practice the language, while learning more and connecting to another part of my identity,鈥 she says.

She believes gaining fluency in the language will be an added advantage, back in Canada. It will also be a great asset when she returns to China next. 鈥淚 would encourage other students to take advantage of exchange opportunities since it鈥檚 a great way to meet new people and learn about different cultures,鈥 says Kwan.

Taking advantage of international opportunities like this during her undergraduate degree at 91亚色 might have helped Kwan鈥檚 journey after 91亚色. Kwan is among the top four percent applicants for the highly competitive program at where she will pursue a Master of Global Affairs degree. Inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University, the Schwarzman Scholarship was  co-founded by Tsinghua University and Stephen A. Schwarzman, Chairman of U.S. investment and advisory firm Blackstone.

Kwan, strongly recommends interested students to connect with peers while at 91亚色 about international experiential learning opportunities. In fact, she learned about the highly competitive Schwarzman scholarship program from another 91亚色 student, who is currently participating in the program.

Hoang 鈥淛ack鈥 Lam and Alexander Wirch both are classic examples of ambitious and enterprising students with leadership qualities that the program aims to encourage.

The Future Leaders program is popular among iBBA students, as it allows them to graduate with two degrees. Hoang 鈥淛ack鈥 Lam and Alexander Wirch are preparing to embark on the international portion of their education this fall at Peking University (PKU). The Future Leaders program at Peking is open to the top undergraduate students from elite business schools from around the world.

鈥淲e are both very excited to become a part of the program,鈥 says Wirch, who was a national finalist at the L鈥橭r茅al Canada Brandstorm competition along with Lam in 2023.

They both are classic examples of ambitious and enterprising students with leadership qualities that the program aims to encourage. Wirch served as a first-year representative and director of corporate relations for the Schulich Undergraduate Business Society and director of conferences for 91亚色 Marketing Association. He was also a national finalist at the Labatt Breweries of Canada 鈥 Corona Case Competition and will become Visa Canada鈥檚 first Merchants & Acquiring intern this summer.

On the other hand, Lam completed his marketing and public relations internship at the Canadian arm of the French multinational personal care company L鈥橭r茅al, in April. 鈥淭he education at Schulich has prepared me for globalized world. This wealth of knowledge in combination with networking opportunities landed me as L鈥橭r茅al Canada鈥檚 youngest intern.鈥

Lam hopes to take advantage of the two years he will be spending in China to reconnect with his Chinese roots and explore the country through travel. Similarly, Wirch who has lived in Ecuador and China, looks forward to continuing to broaden his international lived experience.

Both Lam and Wirch are excited to embark on the second part of their educational journey this fall. Upon completion of their education at PKU in Fall 2026, they will be eligible to cross the convocation stage twice 鈥 once in China and once in Canada, an opportunity not many 20-somethings can boast of. They both believe their 91亚色 education will have a lasting impact on their future as global leaders in their chosen careers.
