Lack of affordable housing affects student mental health, promotes social hierarchies /news/2022/02/11/lack-of-affordable-housing-affects-student-mental-health-promotes-social-hierarchies/ Fri, 11 Feb 2022 17:14:00 +0000 /news/?p=709 Trying to find student housing in Toronto not only requires resourcefulness and creativity, but it further exacerbates the marginalization of students and creates socio-economic burdens, says 91亚色 Associate Professor Luisa Sotomayor, lead author of a new paper.

TORONTO, Feb. 11, 2022 鈥 Trying to find student housing in Toronto not only requires resourcefulness and creativity, but it further exacerbates the marginalization of students and creates socio-economic burdens, says 91亚色 Associate Professor , lead author of a new paper.

The researchers found that navigating a tight housing system, especially during a housing crisis, puts students in a difficult position where a lot of time and energy is spent trying to find a suitable place to live.

鈥淎 lack of affordable housing can impact the academic, health and well-being of students, as they face not only a high level of stress, but also a socio-economic burden that can further marginalize them and reproduce social hierarchies, and class, gender, racialized or ageist divides,鈥 says Sotomayor of the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change.

Luisa Sotomayor

Students reported feeling disengaged from their classmates, programs and post-secondary institution, and experienced heightened mental and physical health issues. 鈥淎dding to the stress, students often find themselves without a voice in how to make student housing more available and affordable,鈥 says Sotomayor. Most housing studies haven鈥檛 included the perspective and experience of post-secondary students.

The paper came out of a multi-university Toronto-based research project, , conducted between 2017 and 2019 that set out to address post-secondary student housing challenges in Toronto. The researchers from 91亚色, Ryerson University, the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education and the University of Toronto, used focus group data to examine student housing preferences, strategies used to access affordable accommodations, and how housing and economic stress affects their well-being.

Many students report having to work extra hours or take on multiple jobs to pay rent 鈥 impacting the time they have for academics and social lives. This was especially true for students that didn鈥檛 have the financial support of families.

鈥淭he lack of affordable housing also left students vulnerable to illegal clauses in rental agreements, often aimed at exploiting their lack of legal knowledge or their fear of losing access to the unit. This was reported in rooming houses with high numbers of international students and women,鈥 says Sotomayor. 鈥淥ther times, students were asked for illegal and non-refundable application fees, the illegal collection of their private information, such as passport images from international students or health insurance numbers, and for a deposit larger than the legal first and last months of rent.鈥

Part of the issue is students have no related tenant rights or protections linked to their student status in Ontario.

The students say involvement and multi-stakeholder approaches are needed to overcome Toronto's student housing crisis, including better information around housing options, universities connecting them to trusted landlords, advocating on their behalf, and encouraging student unions and organizations to get involved in housing rights issues. At the city and regional levels, student should be included in affordable housing plans and discussions.

The researchers say student contributions to urban life, as well as local and regional economies are substantial, but they are rarely seen by policymakers as an asset.

The paper, , will be published in the journal Cities in May, but is currently available.

National pan-university program backed by $1.2 million from RBC Foundation as part of RBC Future Launch

TORONTO, Oct. 5, 2021 鈥撎91亚色 is launching听a three-year initiative听to enhance the representation of Black youth at universities across Canada by supporting upper-year high school students as they plan for their future such as pursuing post-secondary education or work 鈥 and aiding in the transition and retention of those who pursue university. The initiative is led by Professor Carl James, 91亚色鈥檚 Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora in the Faculty of Education. James has focused on addressing systemic barriers and racial inequities for over a decade and a recent听听from the RBC Foundation, as part of听, is allowing this work to go national.

鈥淲e鈥檙e starting to see some attention to streaming 鈥 the process of placing students into academic or non-academic oriented classes based on their assumed intellectual abilities. The Ontario government鈥檚 announcement about ending academic streaming starting with the Grade 9 math curriculum this September as well as a ban on suspending young students is an okay start. However, we have a long way to go. Black students across Canada continue to report racial inequities and experience barriers in the education system,鈥 says听, whose 2017 groundbreaking research revealed Black students are being disproportionately streamed away from academic programs and suspended at significantly higher rates than white or other racialized students.听The report,听, used data to show poor outcomes for Black students and that current students were experiencing worse outcomes than their parents and grandparents.

James is bringing together Kevin Hewitt, Physics Professor from Dalhousie University; Juliet Daniel, Associate Dean of Research from McMaster University; Jennifer Adams, Canada Research Chair in Creativity & STEM and Associate Professor from University of Calgary; and Annette Henry, Professor, Language and Literacy Education from University of British Columbia, who share a commitment to addressing the educational issues of Black youth to further the systemic anti-Black racism work of individual institutions, including interventions and research. The research component will build on existing Canadian census data with a longitudinal study of grade 11 and 12 students over a three-year period, informing the development of new community-based and student-support programs, and will for the first time facilitate the sharing of documentation and data across Canadian universities 鈥 allowing for geographical and contextual comparisons to be made. For example, James is particularly interested in the experience of second-and-third generation Black students and how the impact of generational status compares between Toronto and Halifax.

In 2020,听RBC听听to address the inequity and systemic bias that have disadvantaged Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) individuals and youth. As part of this commitment, RBC committed to providing $50 million in focused funding through RBC Future Launch to create meaningful and transformative pathways to prosperity for 25,000 BIPOC youth by 2025.

鈥淓nsuring听that Black students have equitable access to opportunity is critical to building strong, inclusive communities,鈥 says Mark Beckles, Vice-President, Social Impact & Innovation, RBC. 鈥淲e are working closely with our partners, including many BIPOC-serving organizations, to enable access. RBC鈥檚 support of the now national work of the Jean Augustine Chair will help to ensure that present and future generations of Black talent can reach their fullest potential.鈥

The initiative will kick off on Oct. 6 with a national conversation hosted by 91亚色 and the RBC Student Success Initiative and Data Hub.

TORONTO, March 22, 2016 鈥 91亚色 President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri welcomes the Government of Canada鈥檚 commitments in today鈥檚 budget to create a special fund to invest in research infrastructure projects at universities, to increase funding for granting councils and to make post-secondary education more affordable for students.

In presenting his first Federal budget, Finance Minister Bill Morneau announced the government will invest up to $2 billion over three years for new university infrastructure projects. This new funding will enhance and modernize research facilities on Canadian campuses.

Further, the University applauds the Federal government鈥檚 enhanced investment in the Federal granting councils and a research support fund. This investment of an additional $95 million per year recognizes the fundamental role of investigator-led discovery research in an innovative society.

Lastly, the University is also pleased that the Federal government has committed to increase the Canada Student Grant amount by 50%. This enhanced grant will provide greater support for our low and middle-income students. Further, the introduction of a flat-rate student contribution to determine eligibility for Canada Student Loans and Grants will make it easier for students to work and gain valuable labour market experience without having to worry about a reduction in their level of financial assistance.

鈥淭oday鈥檚 budget is a strong signal that the Canadian government recognizes the importance of investing in university research and infrastructure, enhancing accessibility and supporting students as key to building up the Canadian economy,鈥 said Shoukri. 鈥淲e are pleased that the Federal government has recognized that the prosperity and the future of Canada require that we are able to attract and retain talented people, boost innovation and build a sustainable economy. Investments in our students, our research and our infrastructure are critical to future generations and to a more innovative Canada.鈥

El Morr, Professor of the School of Health Policy & Management and Professor Paul Ritvo of the School of Kinesiology & Health Science are the principal investigators for the study.

鈥淲e aim to develop a student-centered virtual platform to meaningfully engage them in learning about available resources, self-help modules and mindfulness practice,鈥 said Ahmad. As Ritvo points out, 鈥淥nline mindfulness programs have been demonstrated to have mental health benefits equal to in-person programs.鈥

The researchers think more students may seek help online now as many are reluctant to pursue in-person help because of the stigma associated with mental health problems.

鈥淚 am excited to see Canadian ingenuity at work to support the health of Canadians. These projects have the potential to make high quality mental health services more available to the young Canadians who need them, and they are also making great strides for the delivery of increased home care services. We have the talent, the intelligence and the passion in Canada to make the field of eHealth one of our (many) strengths,鈥 said Minister of Health Jane Philpott.

The 91亚色 team will conduct a randomized controlled trial, recruiting 600 students over three semesters at 91亚色. The students will be divided into three groups. The first will use a MVC platform for two weeks; the second, an eight-week, in-person group-based mindfulness program using cognitive behavioural therapy; and the third will be placed in a wait-list control group. The researchers will compare the groups for impact on mental health, engagement and costs.

鈥淭hrough this funding, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research is helping our researchers grow their innovative research programs and contribute to scientific knowledge that will lead to improved health resources for students,鈥 said Robert Hach茅, vice-president research & innovation.

Funding for the project is part of CIHR鈥檚 Youth and Adolescent Mental Health priority area of eHealth Innovation Partnership Program (eHIPP), developed by the CIHR in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program. Philpott and Navdeep Singh Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science, & Economic Development, announced $13.8M for 22 innovative ehealth projects today.

91亚色 will conduct the research with an IT partner ForaHealthyMe.com and several partner organizations.

鈥淎 Mindfulness Virtual Community would incorporate key elements of online student-to-professional group meetings, moderated peer discussion and mental health education,鈥 said El Morr.

Students can access an online community and resources at any time. 鈥淭he ultimate goal is to help students adopt health-enhancing behaviours that reduce needs for psychiatric and clinical counselling services,鈥 said Ritvo.

In addition, the MVC model is expected to reduce pressures from an overburdened health-care system and cut wait times for help, said Ahmad.

The team hypothesizes that the MVC and group-based mindfulness groups will be similar in terms of reductions in mental distress, but the former will likely be less costly. These methods are complementary, and in combination, could be less costly than traditional specialists鈥 services. In the next phase of the project, the team hopes to conduct a multi-campus, national trial.
