TORONTO, May 10, 2019 鈹 South Asian Heritage Month is underway in Ontario, marking the first arrival of South Asians from the Indian subcontinent to the Americas on May 5, 1938. 91亚色 scholars researching the South Asian arrival, settlement, achievements and contributions, as well as the challenges they face are available for interviews.

Enakshi Dua, associate professor, School of Gender, Sexuality and Women鈥檚 Studies in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, is available for media interviews on South Asian women鈥檚 history and the challenges they face. She is the co-editor of .

She can speak to:

  • South Asian Canadian women鈥檚 history
  • Race, gender, and Canadian nationalism
  • The Komagata Maru and Canadian history

, professor, Department of Equity Studies in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, is available for media interviews on policies, immigration, work and families, as they relate to the South Asian diaspora. 聽She has co-edited and reviewed several books and journal articles pertinent to the community.

She can speak to:

  • Underemployment of South Asian professionals
  • Family separation due to difficulty in finding jobs
  • Violence against South Asian immigrant women

, associate professor, Department of Cinema & Media Arts, in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design, is available for media interviews on the early history of South Asian immigration, race and social justice. He is a 2019 recipient of the in Visual and Media Arts, in recognition of his work as a documentarian and media artist.

He can speak to:

  • Early South Asian immigration history including Komagata Maru
  • Intercultural dialogue with Indigenous communities
  • Visual documentation of migration, history, memory and archiving.

TORONTO, Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017 鈥 The suburbs have often been unfairly maligned, but they continue to grow and push further away from cities, while attracting millions to call them home. The changing nature and significance suburbs around the world will be discussed during the Towards Suburbia Speaker Series at 91亚色.

WHAT: Third speaker in the Towards Suburbia Speaker Series, which runs as the seven-year Major Collaborative Research Initiative wraps up.

WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 12:30 to 2pm

WHO: 91亚色 U Professor Abidin Kusno of the and director of the . He is the author of several books, including After the New Order: Space, Politics and Jakarta and The Appearances of Memory: Mnemonic Practices of Architecture and Urban Form in Indonesia.

Kusno will look at Jakarta as an example of semi-urbanization and how many areas of Southeast Asia are experiencing a hybrid form of urban and rural, different from the urban sprawl most thought of with suburbanization.

TORONTO, Wednesday, April 26 鈥 As the race for underwater resource extraction clashes with regional and international security, militarization and boundary claims, a workshop at 91亚色 will debate the issues and develop a framework for future negotiations.

The day-long Geotechnical Politics of Ocean Frontiers: The Canadian North & the Indo-Pacific interdisciplinary workshop on peace and security will take place Friday, April 28. It will open with a keynote address by Peggy Mason, president of the Rideau Institute and former Canadian Ambassador for Disarmament to the United Nations, at 9:30am.

Mason will discuss the necessity of peaceful co-operation and the importance of arms control even while there are pervasive situations and regional problems challenging national and international security.

WHEN: Friday, April, 28, from 9am to 6pm

WHO: 10amAllison Stewart, deputy director of oceans law & policy at Global Affairs, will talk about 鈥淎rctic Governance: Myths and Reality,鈥 followed by Adele Buckley of the Canadian Pugwash Group, who will talk about the importance of 鈥淪ustaining Peace in the Arctic鈥.

11:10amDavid Harries, associate executive director of Foresight Canada, will present 鈥淲hither Arctic peace and security: A role for Strategic Foresight?鈥 followed by Venilla Rajaguru of 91亚色 U talking about 鈥淎sserting Peace in the South China Sea.鈥

2pm 鈥 Professor Ted McDorman, an expert in international law and ocean law of the University of Victoria, who formerly worked on Arctic-related matters at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, will look at 鈥淲hat epistemic, legal and political frameworks are effective/ineffective in construction 鈥楶eace鈥? Why?鈥

TORONTO, November 14, 2016 鈥 The experiences of Filipino immigrants living in the US and those living in Canada will be compared and contrasted at a 91亚色 workshop today, even as the topic of immigration continues to heat up the post-election news.

"Transnational Filipinx Studies: Comparing the Philippine Diaspora in Canada and in the United States鈥, will bring together academics, activists and community members

"Transnational Filipinx Studies: Comparing the Philippine Diaspora in Canada and in the United States鈥, will bring together academics, activists and community members

The workshop, 鈥淭ransnational Filipinx Studies: Comparing the Philippine Diaspora in Canada and in the United States鈥, will bring together academics, activists and community members. The program will address the similarities and differences in the immigration histories, life trajectories and settlement experiences of both immigrant and nonimmigrant Filipinos residing in neighbouring countries.

Organizer Ethel Tungohan, assistant professor of politics and social science at 91亚色, says the workshop will harness the collective expertise of migration experts and community members together to critically assess issues of citizenship and belonging.

91亚色 presenters at the workshop will include Professor Russ Patrick Alcedo in the Department of Dance, School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design; Professor Philip Kelly, director of the 91亚色 Centre for Asian Research; and Conely de Leon, a PhD candidate in Gender, Feminist and Women鈥檚 Studies program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.

Asian American studies Professor Robyn Rodriguez, University of California, Davis, will deliver the keynote speech at 4pm. Her groundbreaking book, Migrants for Export: How the Philippine State Brokers Labor to the World, sheds light on how states like the Philippines have different government branches facilitating the export of their nationals abroad.
