National pan-university program backed by $1.2 million from RBC Foundation as part of RBC Future Launch

TORONTO, Oct. 5, 2021 鈥撎91亚色 is launching听a three-year initiative听to enhance the representation of Black youth at universities across Canada by supporting upper-year high school students as they plan for their future such as pursuing post-secondary education or work 鈥 and aiding in the transition and retention of those who pursue university. The initiative is led by Professor Carl James, 91亚色鈥檚 Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora in the Faculty of Education. James has focused on addressing systemic barriers and racial inequities for over a decade and a recent听听from the RBC Foundation, as part of听, is allowing this work to go national.

鈥淲e鈥檙e starting to see some attention to streaming 鈥 the process of placing students into academic or non-academic oriented classes based on their assumed intellectual abilities. The Ontario government鈥檚 announcement about ending academic streaming starting with the Grade 9 math curriculum this September as well as a ban on suspending young students is an okay start. However, we have a long way to go. Black students across Canada continue to report racial inequities and experience barriers in the education system,鈥 says听, whose 2017 groundbreaking research revealed Black students are being disproportionately streamed away from academic programs and suspended at significantly higher rates than white or other racialized students.听The report,听, used data to show poor outcomes for Black students and that current students were experiencing worse outcomes than their parents and grandparents.

James is bringing together Kevin Hewitt, Physics Professor from Dalhousie University; Juliet Daniel, Associate Dean of Research from McMaster University; Jennifer Adams, Canada Research Chair in Creativity & STEM and Associate Professor from University of Calgary; and Annette Henry, Professor, Language and Literacy Education from University of British Columbia, who share a commitment to addressing the educational issues of Black youth to further the systemic anti-Black racism work of individual institutions, including interventions and research. The research component will build on existing Canadian census data with a longitudinal study of grade 11 and 12 students over a three-year period, informing the development of new community-based and student-support programs, and will for the first time facilitate the sharing of documentation and data across Canadian universities 鈥 allowing for geographical and contextual comparisons to be made. For example, James is particularly interested in the experience of second-and-third generation Black students and how the impact of generational status compares between Toronto and Halifax.

In 2020,听RBC听听to address the inequity and systemic bias that have disadvantaged Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) individuals and youth. As part of this commitment, RBC committed to providing $50 million in focused funding through RBC Future Launch to create meaningful and transformative pathways to prosperity for 25,000 BIPOC youth by 2025.

鈥淓nsuring听that Black students have equitable access to opportunity is critical to building strong, inclusive communities,鈥 says Mark Beckles, Vice-President, Social Impact & Innovation, RBC. 鈥淲e are working closely with our partners, including many BIPOC-serving organizations, to enable access. RBC鈥檚 support of the now national work of the Jean Augustine Chair will help to ensure that present and future generations of Black talent can reach their fullest potential.鈥

The initiative will kick off on Oct. 6 with a national conversation hosted by 91亚色 and the RBC Student Success Initiative and Data Hub.

TD Bank Group commits $1 million in funding to support a renewed focus on building mid-career bridging programs, training and re-skilling initiatives

TORONTO, June 10, 2019 - Today, 91亚色 announced a new donation from TD to support the at 91亚色gate Mall in the Black Creek Community. The TD Centre is a satellite office of 91亚色 that strives for academic innovation through community building and experiential learning along with postsecondary attainment for the Black Creek Community.

Since its inception, the centre has served nearly 70,000 people from the local community with dozens of programs and has become a catalyst for breaking down barriers, fostering mutually-beneficial partnerships and positive change for the local community.

Talisha Ramsaroop was a high school student in Black Creek. Although talented and eager to make a difference, she did not envision herself pursuing a postsecondary education. She soon realized that the stigma imposed on the community had affected her perception of herself and her goals. After connecting with 91亚色鈥檚 she enrolled at 91亚色 and vowed to help find pathways for local youth to pursue postsecondary education. Today, Talisha is an employee of the TD Centre and speaks to local high school students about empowering themselves to pursue their dreams.

When Abena Offeh-Gyimah dreamed up her small business, the first place she turned for support was the TD Community Engagement Centre. Offeh-Gyimah鈥檚 small business offers the Black Creek Community native foods from Africa while building ethical relationships with farmers, cooperatives and collectives that enhance food sovereignty. And for her, the support she received from the TD Centre was the key to her success.

鈥91亚色 has transformed from community participant, to leader, to a fully-engaged institution in the Black Creek community,鈥 said 91亚色 President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton. 鈥淎s part of our commitment to access and connection, we have brought together community, university and civic partners in a spirit of inclusion and empowerment. We couldn鈥檛 have done it without TD Bank Group and look forward to the next 10 years of breaking down barriers through university-community-private sector partnerships.鈥

Norie Campbell, Group Head, Customer and Colleague Experience and a 91亚色 alumna, expressed TD鈥檚 commitment to making a difference in the community. "The skills needed for jobs today is vastly different than just a few years ago. It is critical that there are resources and places where individuals can seek assistance to learn and upskill in order to thrive. I am delighted that TD Community Engagement Centre's leadership and programs are helping people in the community feel more confident about their future in the changing economy."

Celebrating over a decade of impact, TD initially supported the creation of the 91亚色 TD Community Engagement Centre in 2007. The renewed commitment not only recognizes the accomplishments in the Black Creek Community, it will support a new approach focusing on mid-career bridging programs through training and re-skilling programs.

The donation has been made through TD's corporate citizenship platform, , which leverages the collective power of its philanthropy, its business and its human capital to help people feel more confident and achieve their personal goals in a changing world.

From their survey, the seven-member research team estimates that our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 25 billion to as many as 100 billion brown dwarfs. Even this could be a significant underestimation, as there are many lower mass and fainter brown dwarfs, present everywhere in star clusters, they note.

鈥淚t seems that brown dwarfs form in abundance in a variety of star clusters,鈥 says Jayawardhana. 鈥淭hey are ubiquitous denizens of our Milky Way galaxy.鈥

Jayawardhana and the team have come to the conclusion after surveying brown dwarfs in a massive star cluster, noting this is probably typical of the environment where most stars in the galaxy form.

The researchers found that there is approximately one brown dwarf for every two stars in the cluster, similar to the ratio they had found previously in nearer, less dense star clusters.

They present the today at the National Astronomy Meeting in the UK. Lead researcher Koraljka Muzic at the University of Lisbon and team member Aleks Scholz at the University of St Andrews have collaborated with Jayawardhana since their time as postdoctoral fellows in Jayawardhana鈥檚 group.

Scholz says: 鈥淲e鈥檝e found a lot of brown dwarfs in these clusters. And whatever the cluster type, the brown dwarfs are really common. Brown dwarfs form alongside stars in clusters, so our work suggests there are a huge number of brown dwarfs out there.鈥

Since the discovery of the first brown dwarf in 1995, astronomers have identified thousands more. The overwhelming majority known to date reside within 1500 light years of the Sun, relatively nearby astronomically speaking, simply because brown dwarfs are intrinsically faint and difficult to observe at greater distances.

Back in 2006, Jayawardhana and his collaborators began a new search for young brown dwarfs. After surveying five nearby star-forming regions, they turned their attention to the more distant RCW 38 star cluster, which has a high density of more massive stars and very different conditions from the other surveyed regions.

The fact that they have found just as many brown dwarfs in RCW 38 suggests that the environment where the stars form, whether stars are more or less massive, tightly packed or less crowded, has only a small effect on how brown dwarfs form.

For the current study, the researchers used the European Southern Observatory鈥檚 Very Large Telescope in Chile to target the RCW 38 cluster, located 5500 light years away from the Sun. They used an adaptive-optics camera to capture sharp images, considering the cluster鈥檚 distance and the proximity of the faint brown dwarfs to bright and massive stars.

The RCW 38 study has been submitted to Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Preprint is available at

TORONTO, Wednesday, May 10, 2017 鈥 Public art can startle, resonate and inform, but its role is changing as expectations evolve about what it should be and do. 91亚色鈥檚 Department of Visual Art & Art History will host a symposium May 18 to 20 with a focus on the policies and practices of commissioning and creating art for the public realm.

Public Art: New Ways of Thinking and Working will bring together artists, curators, urban planners, academics, policymakers and community organizers to explore the changing role of public art. Talks and panels are designed to spark conversations across disciplines, from the perspective of both research and practice, about the current state of contemporary Canadian public art practice in the context of innovations happening internationally.

The symposium is co-organized by sculptor , chair of the Department of Visual Art & Art History in 91亚色鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design, and Ciara McKeown, a Calgary-based public art consultant and commissioner. McKeown has served as advisor to the Creative City Network of Canada, and currently works as a project manager with artists .

Vickerd鈥檚 large-scale public art projects include , hybrid human/animal figures commissioned for streetscapes in Edmonton and Thunder Bay, and , a collaborative, choreographed work performed by high-rise construction cranes perched atop buildings, that has engaged developers and crane operators and enthralled residents in Toronto, Edmonton and Washington D.C.

鈥淧ublic art is contentious. It straddles expectations ranging from traditional to temporary, monument to site, community-based to corporate,鈥 said Vickerd. 鈥淭he increasingly diverse, connected and yet fractious world we live in raises important questions about the role of public art and its relationship to issues such as economic disparity, environmental uncertainty, cultural inclusivity and political unrest.鈥

He noted that the symposium comes at a pivotal moment as ideas of what public art can and should be are being revisited by both creators and commissioners across Canada.

鈥淢ost Canadian municipal public art policies were established decades ago. Since that time, artists have dramatically re-positioned their approach to public art. And so has the public. Audience engagement is key,鈥 said Vickerd.

鈥淥ur symposium takes an inclusive approach to exploring current issues and innovations, with the aim of expanding the conversation about public art in Canada and creating tangible outcomes. We look forward to lively debate and open dialogue on how to advance critical, social and civic discourse through public art, the shifting roles and expectations of artists, and what the future holds for public art practice.

WHAT: , a symposium featuring and 12panel discussions on topics ranging from the role of artists in city-building and of public art as social engagement, to the political and cultural role of commemorative monumental sculptures, public space and Indigenous political expression, Canadian public art in China, and artistic dissension as community practice.

  • Free public talk, 鈥淲hen Aesthetics is Not Enough,鈥 by American artist , founding member of the internationally acclaimed , co-presented by the Art Gallery of Ontario, will look at the challenges of producing art in the public sphere that moves beyond decoration on Thursday, May 18 at 7pm at the AGO.
  • Keynote address, 鈥,鈥 by Emily Carr University of Art & Design Associate Professor , a practitioner and researcher specializing in public art, community engagement and urban renewal, will address problems of standard practices in municipal commissioning processes for public art on Friday, May 19 at 4:30pm at 91亚色 U.

WHEN: Thursday, May 18 to Saturday, May 20.

WHERE: Kurtz鈥 talk is in the AGO鈥檚 Jackman Hall. All other events are in the Accolade West Building, at 91亚色, 4700 Keele St. (See number 93 on the .)

REGISTRATION: The symposium is open to the public. Symposium pass is $125 and $75 for students/artists/underemployed. .
